The Paris Hilton video

Paris Hilton makes headlines all over the world just for being her but her sex video, “One Night in Paris” made her even more infamous! Now just hanging out with Britney Spear isn’t enough. The video released by ex-boyfriend, Rick Salomon caused quite a stir.

Now here exclusively is Paris Hilton’s new video! Check out the video here for download. Be careful, it’s shiny!

(Yes, this is like Pamela Anderson’s latest video, and yes, this is the last time I’ll recycle this joke!)

What is it about Paris Hilton that made you search for her video today?

Idiots on the road on film

Gardai are investigating a video found on bebo.com made by two lads from Cork. They made a video of themselves driving at 200km/h through the Jack Lynch Tunnel and then posted it on the Internet for all to see. I wonder who did they think would watch the video? Has the video made it outside Bebo yet? Apparently the Gardai have asked Bebo.com to take the video down so it could be gone for good. Pity, it could go down in Irish Internet Folklore.

While we’re waiting, here are two lads who decided to drive at speed through Dublin city center, at least until they passed an unmarked Garda car. (via Blogorrah)

The video might not be playing, but you can view it here still. Not sure why but it’ll probably right itself eventually. Note the comment from the driver:

deloford (2 months ago)
They stopped us because it was an english reg in dub& they thought the car was stolen by a couple of nackers, also you cant see clearly but it was v. bad driving in rain, nearly ran someone down, run red light, speeding in bus lane,a guy videoing it in the front seat which they saw.
Normal cops dont threaten to shoot you and if it was normal cops we’d ave been in the shit. He started to search and got a call.

And this comment was definitely not made by an Irish person, like,

Why is everyone using like at the end of every sentence what ever the fuck that means?!!!

Ask the developer

On January 20th I’ll be speaking at BarCamp South East on the subject of WordPress.com and WordPress MU. The talk is titled, “WordPress.com – running the biggest wpmu site in the world” which is vague enough that I could talk about anything but I’d like to know what you want to hear.

Public speaking isn’t my strong point, I prefer to be behind the keyboard, or looking through a camera lens but sometimes you have to push yourself to do unfamiliar things. Here’s my go at public speaking.

Talks will be in 45 minute slots and I would like to make mine more of a discussion forum like the WPMU talk we had at WordCamp way back in August last year. It went really well and everyone got something out of it.

Subjects I’m considering include:

  • Merging code from WP core which is horribly exciting, have you ever seen vimdiff in action?
  • Site stats – did you know we publish them?
  • Hardware – server porn. How do we handle the load generated by Slashdots, Diggs, and almost 600,000 blogs?
  • Hooks and plugins – new hooks in the signup process and wpmu admin backend.
  • Anyone interested in working from home and virtual company issues? Automattic has employees in at least four countries.

So, if you’ll be there I want to hear from you. If you won’t, I still want to hear from you because I’m sure Bernie or someone will record the talk and put it up online.

Dan and Becs, a love story in the unmaking

Dan and Becs

Reception to the new comedy on RTE has been less than favourable, or so it seems by what The Screaming Lady has to say as well as Blogorrah.

Was it really that bad? I didn’t watch it so I was spared the experience but someone must have done so! Go on admit it, what did you think of it? Was it a pile of trash or the greatest thing since Big Brother? (Or does that amount to the same thing anyway?)

Just in case you missed a few episodes or you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, here are a few episodes, courtesy of Blogorrah where I saw them first!

Dan & Becs, Episode One: The Club of Love

Episode Two: All About Becs

Episode Three: All About Dan

Was the Janitor really in the Fugitive?

If you’re a fan of the Scrubs tv show then you might remember the episode in which JD thinks he sees the Janitor in the Fugitive as a policeman on the subway train who shouts, “Kimball!” before being shot. I always wondered if the Janitor was messing with JD’s head at the end of that episode when he acts out the policeman role.

Wonder no more. Neil Flynn who acts as the Janitor in Scrubs really did appear in the film the Fugitive! You can read about this and more trivia on imdb or the Janitor page on Wikipedia.

Janitor’s facility with accents is explained by his membership on his high school’s speech team (“My Fifteen Seconds”) and his past experience as an actor; he even had a small role in The Fugitive (Flynn actually played the role of the transit policeman who is shot on the commuter train in the film, mixing reality with the storyline). Janitor shares this secret only with J.D.; it explains why he’s a janitor now, and was implied as another reason for his sadistic behavior, as an outlet for his frustration at a failed acting career (“My Friend the Doctor”).

Jump forward to about 1:18 of this fan video made of Neil Flynn clips. You’ll see both the Fugitive and Scrubs scenes one after the other.

And finally, some Janitor highlights, including the first time JD and he met. “Maybe there’s a penny stuck in there?” Very funny! I think the janitor is one of the better and unusual characters in Scrubs.

How to rename a file in Mac OS X

Silly bugger, doesn’t he know Macs are easy to use? Well, yes they are but it’s not obvious how you can rename a file or folder in Finder. I had to look it up in a book to find out. (Thanks Barry for “The Missing Manual”!)

It is rather simple to rename a file actually, although not obvious.

  • In Finder, open the folder with your file in it.
  • See all those pretty icons? Don’t click on them. Find the icon for your file. Click once on that icon then click and hold the mouse button down on the filename below it.
  • After about a second of holding down the mouse button the text will become editable and you can type over the filename. Be careful you don’t change the extension because bad things will happen!

Simple when you know how.

Meanwhile, Mark is documenting his own experiences with a Mac Mini. Must try X-Chat Aqua.

No Béarla in this country

Is it possible to travel the length and breath of Ireland by only speaking in Irish? Evidentally yes if the following video clip is anything to go by. TG4 broadcaster Manchán Magan did it and this is his story. Here he buys condoms in a chemist, chats up some girls at a disco and finishes the night off by, well, watch the clip. It’s a bit funny. Airtricity – switch now?

Airtricity are running an advertising campaign on the radio currently in an effort to get businesses to switch to them from the semi-state monopoly electricity generator, ESB. They offer to save you 10% off ESB prices and they’ll freeze your energy prices until 2010. That’s very attractive considering that the ESB is getting yet another price increase this month from the rubber stamping regulator. Unfortunately when you click “Switch now” on their site all you get is an error message:

XSLTransform Error

XSLTransform: Unmatched end tag.
File: VCFile(N/E:0:[website]::/ireland/switch_to_airtricity/switch_now/index.xml)

Oops. That’s a pity because I wonder if I qualify as a small business being a self-employed person working at home. I’ll have to check back later.

Body of Joseph Mullally found

Twenty year old Joseph Mullally went missing last December 14th after he was last seen outside The Brog on Oliver Plunkett Street. An extensive search for the last several weeks went on involving volunteers and emergency personnel turned up nothing until this morning at 10am when 4 of the searchers found his body at the quayside in Tivoli, downstream of the city.
