Minecraft up in the aether

Aether, a mod for Minecraft that is, “a celestial realm found in outer limits of the atmosphere. The Aether is what you could call the “antipole” of the Nether. The Nether is a network of desolate, fiery caverns filled with bloodstained Cobblestone and sticky Soulsand; it lies beneath the very soil of our Minecraft world. The Aether, on the other hand, is a collection of floating plains and islands, all connected together to create a breathtaking dimension of the skies. Even during the night, the Aether is still quite peaceful, and a normal day in the Aether is the equivalent of three days on the surface.”

It has floating whales, new block types, angry birds, and dungeon systems protected by guardians!

Unfortunately it’s not trivial to install and when the next Minecraft update comes out it’ll mess everything up, probably. Still looks like a stunning mod for the game! (via)

BF3 Multiplayer Trailer

Yes, yes, yes. Footage of the alpha test of the game is making it’s way around the net but you won’t find it here. The game is far from complete but shows lots of promise.

Oh yes, check out the battlelog too. That would be the social interface to the game DICE are working on. (Thanks xRegardsx for reminding me ’bout that post)

Great Pixelenemy interview with Kevin O’Leary about Battlelog and the BattleRecorder.

Now, why is it that the gaming PC I want to get always costs over 1,000 Euro? PS3/Xbox versions for me!

It would seem that friends playing together is…

It would seem that friends playing together is regarded as team stacking in Team Fortress 2.

On one hand that’s great because the server is free to balance teams but it sucks when you want to play with friends you’re chatting with on Skype. Any notion of playing strategically as a team goes out the window when you have to be careful what you say. The same happens with Bad Company 2 on PC.

Who ever decided that a server browser was the best way to join a game anyway? I Just want to play a game with my friends! I don’t care what server I’m on.

PC players will look down on console players because they have to use fiddly controllers but the squad system in Bad Company 2 on consoles is a great way of getting a group of friends into a game. Yes, there is team stacking, but servers do auto balance as well (sometimes). Then like any of the platforms you have to try to get back to your old squad. At least you start out on the same team!

Now, come on Microsoft and Sony. Let console players use a mouse and keyboard! Best of both worlds!

Cookies for Comments is a WordPress plugin that can be used alongside Akismet to significantly reduce or even kill completely comment spam.

Version 0.5.4 adds a rejections page in case human visitors trip over the cookie check. You can modify the message shown to visitors and it’s obviously only useful if you don’t use the cookie check in your .htaccess file.

It happens sometimes, usually when the visitor has cookies turned off, but very occasionally for some other reason. (That I don’t know of yet)

This plugin isn’t a replacement for Akismet as it is easily bypassed. Thankfully 99% of spam bots don’t bother checking so this plugin works quite well!

Fly! The new Minecraft map is now live!

Minecraft is dead, long live Minecraft! The old map that used to be on the Minecraft server is gone, and replaced with a fabulous map generated from the seed “fly”. Don’t worry, the old map isn’t completely gone. When you login there’s a link to the zip file where you can download it, and instructions on installing it too.

TF2: Meet the ….

The “meet the ” videos for Team Fortress 2 are legendary. So much so that I had heard of them but nobody ever linked to them. The first one I saw was the recently released “Meet the Medic” (check out the out takes from that video, hilarious!)

So, here they are for your viewing pleasure. All the TF2 character videos so far produced! Go visit the TeamFortress Youtube channel for these and more!

Harry Potter: the story so far

Well, of course if you’ve read the books you’ll know exactly how it’s going to end and how they got there for that matter. I read 2 or 3 of them about 8 years ago so I may have forgotten a detail or two. Who was the big beardy guy who …. ?

It seems to me that Harry Potter is as much the films as it is the books. More so in fact because of the wider audience. Hell, I never bought any of the books (got a lend of ’em at the time), but I do have a box set of the first 5 or 6 films. Yes, haven’t watched them either.

The whole thing is rather baffling, a bit like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles craze back in the early nineties, but this has gone on way longer … (too long if you ask me!)

So, has anyone made a “cam” version of the film yet? Come on Internet, it’s been out a day or two. Surely the “zero day” pirates already have it? I wonder how many kids will come across this post looking for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 (CAM).avi”. Just go buy the books, and while you’re at it buy other books too and expand your mind.

But first, go watch this great chat between Richard Dawkins and Neil deGrasse on the Poetry of Science. That will blow your mind, a hell of a lot more than Harry Potter will do. There’s real magic in science. (Thanks Alex!)

Hours of fun with Sanctum

That’s what an hour and a half of playing Sanctum looks like! Great games with the guys last night but in casual mode it’s just a little too easy. The damage to our core happened when enemy flew over us and we were so busy shooting the ground based guys!

I think Tye and Duck both recorded a few rounds so there might be a commentary coming from them in the next few days.

Live “commentary” thanks to Duck. 🙂

Terraria I bought the game a while back…

Terraria. I bought the game a while back and I’m still struggling to get it. Yes, it’s like Minecraft, but only in the same way Bad Company 2 is a shooter like Black Ops is a shooter. They’re very different games.

I think perhaps my lack of interest is due to a lack of time to invest in the game mining for minerals and learning what to make. 99% of my gaming is done after 9pm, by which time I’m generally exhausted. How’s about you? Has Terraria grabbed you by the proverbial goolies and won’t let go or did you just walk on by?

Regardless, here’s some reading for you: the getting started page on the Terraria wiki and a beginners guide from PC Gamer.
