We started off badly. Dave and I. He joined me and the team I was initially matched with overran us in every game. They used helis to drop off soldiers behind our lines, they used mobile spawn points effectively, they beat us to a pulp. Dave blogged about the night’s gameplay too.

Unfortunately my PS3 disconnected twice. The first time it totally crashed and needed to be rebooted, and the second time I had just flanked a recon and an assault guy on a roof. I stabbed the assault guy as he was closer and moved away to hit the recon guy when I got a black screen and was disconnected! ARGH! I was so pissed off. I checked my stats in the game later I didn’t get a dog tag for that kill. FFS. I was fit to …

After I reconnected we thought a strategic retreat from that game was in order and eventually found ourselves against a better matched team. We won several rounds, even holding them off at the second base in Nelson Harbour and the first base in Port Valdez. I stayed in the construction site there for most of that round. First time I had done that and went mad cutting down trees, spotting and taking down enemies. Got a killstreak of 8 for my efforts! The construction site was taken by three enemy at one point, they started to use the heavy MG and watch the field of battle in front, not keeping an eye on the stairs. We rushed back, I was trailing having spawned below and I caught sight of Dave getting another 2 dog tags to add to his considerable collection.

My handy tracer came out too and helped me plant a few CG rockets on tanks, but I was quite proud of myself hitting a tank across the map without tracing it.

On Port Nelson we quickly lost the second Bravo station. I was heading over there when I saw at least 3 of our team outside the building but they failed to stop it. Regardless, we held the attackers off in fine fashion at Alpha.

Always pick up kit, especially if you’re out of ammo! I was leveling up the recon class but I ran out of ammo and David and I were on the roof of the second Bravo on Nelson Bay so no quick access to an assault ammo box. Unfortunately David was taken out by a sniper in a tree and he hit me too but I survived. I was able to get David’s medic kit. Unfortunately by the time I had made sure the coast was clear I was too late to revive him but I made good use of his LMG spawn trapping the other team as they rushed to defuse Alpha. He spawned on me, we took the other crate and moved up!

My KDR has increased to 0.61 (had a positive KDR in a number of games), a nice jump of 0.02. I leveled up to 15, Staff Sergeant III and unlocked magnum ammo which is a beast. For someone who can’t aim to (sometimes) save his life it’s a huge help.

Thanks to Dave, David, and minato88 who made a great squad to fight alongside!

How to download the Halo: Reach beta

  • Fire up Halo ODST.
  • On the main menu select PREVIEW BETA
  • Download

Or maybe it’s not. Some orange woman gives a pretty decent introduction to the game. Looks like it’s the colour on my DVI connection. In this video she looks perfectly fine, bit too much makeup but no umpa lumpa.

Feel the hate on this post’s comments. Some people can’t wait a few hours!

Almost time for shotguns

Bad Company 2 on Xbox and PS3 hasn’t been patched yet but it will be soon. Until it is, shotguns with magnum ammo are way overpowered. Check out this clip via this post.

I haven’t unlocked magnum ammo yet so I can’t try it out. Hopefully soon as I’m very close! Here’s some more info.

And some general tips for BC2 I found on Reddit:

Out this evening with my wife at a Queen tribute band. Woohoo, thanks Dad for babysitting! 🙂

First impressions of Halo: Reach

Obviously Jesus

Machinima Respawn is full of Halo Reach videos, ish. The beta is due tomorrow and I will probably be pulling out my ODST disk to take part. The videos above remind me of Quake 3. The clean architecture, the futuristic setting, energy weapons. I’m showing my age now aren’t I?

Some more Halo: Reach links. A link dump really:

I wonder if those Halo 2 players are still playing?

Had a few good games of Bad Company 2 to…

Had a few good games of Bad Company 2 tonight with strangers. Nobody used a mic which is frustrating. We lost a few games and won some more.

I was quite proud of my last game attacking on Isla. In the last base we took Bravo fairly quickly but Alpha was more problematic. I almost set the bomb there once but got hit by the heavy MG in a tower.
I came back as a medic with the SAW and watched one of my team mates set Alpha. He ducked into cover to the side but was killed by the heavy MG again. I ran up to the side of the green building in front of the base, and shot 3 defenders who came to disarm the crate! There was a guy manning the gun in the shed behind Alpha and I don’t know how he didn’t see me. I had him all lit up and was ready to kill him just as the game finished. We won! 🙂

I just remembered, in that game on Isla I jumped in a helicopter and waited for my team to join me. And waited. And waited. I think there was only one person in my squad at this stage and they had disappeared somewhere so I decided to go it alone, crash into a crate and see what happens.
Unfortunately I missed Alpha, hit the concrete walls and fell into the water. Not wanting to give the enemy a heli I planted a C4 on it and blew it before circling to the bridge and up and setting the bomb. I threw a motion mine which showed a few guys coming from the back of the base but a team mate and I made short work of them. Alpha blew, and unfortunately I was killed when my M1 ran out of ammo right at the wrong moment.

On Nelson Harbour I was defending, and the attackers were overwhelming. The first Bravo was lit up like a Christmas tree with all the sirens going off. I think I stopped it blowing twice. Once I snuck into that building, and killed 4 enemy sitting upstairs minding the crate. First one by the stairs, then 2 recons and a medic. I like the M1 🙂
The bad guys were back within seconds though. I hid out in the attic, took out a guy climbing the ladder, shot another and dropped a grenade down the hole just as I was killed by a guy from outside. Grenade killed another on the 1st floor as I was watching the killcam! Those guys were super organised. My team were not. I think I got 410 points out of that little incident.

Oh, and yes, I took to heart the advice about aiming in Seananner’s video and it definitely helped. I also used body armour for the first time and that helped too. I reverted my medic’s upgrades from weaponry to medic kit upgrades and the points rolled in at certain times. They certainly helped my team when we were camping on a crate that was about to explode. Unfortunately they then left and got mown down by a medic outside. Ah well.

Stats haven’t updated yet but I unlocked the Recon’s mortar. Judicious use of motion mines may have helped us I hope. Looks like I only got one spot assist this time so the 1167 points I earned was with brute killing power! Got a gold star with the SAW too.

Later… The stats have updated! My KDR was bumped up by 0.01, skill rating went up too by 14 points so there must have been more than a few higher level guys in my games. Got one dogtag, score per minute up 0.02 and win/loss ratio is up 0.04!

Centre before aiming

I’ve read many times that you should be facing where the enemy is before aiming down the sight in first person shooters. If the single player campaign in Bad Company 2 or Modern Warfare 2 is good for anything it’s for practicing this. Disable aim assist and face your enemy before bringing the sights up. You’ll aim and kill faster. Once you get used to it anyway, as I’m still learning.
Leading on from this is the obvious advice that you need to know where your enemy will be in any situation.

This of course only applies to medium to long distance shots. Close up you should just fire from the hip as the target is so much larger. You still need to make sure the enemy is in the centre of the screen though!

It is of course much harder in multiplayer games. The NPCs in the campaign obligingly stand around shooting but not mortally wounding you as you take sight.

One incident where this would have been useful was on Arica Harbour the other night. I was running between two cargo crates and I wasn’t facing dead straight down the passage. A guy came around the corner, stood in the middle, and I was facing slightly to his left. In a fright I jammed on the fire button but round after round went thudding into the sand by his feet and he calmly dispatched me with one round.

Also worth considering is Geoff‘s technique of firing off a burst before you aim down sights, you’ll probably get a round or two in and then finish them off when they’re hurt and disorientated. Must dig up one of his videos where he demonstrates this.

I admit my aim mostly sucks in first person shooters, so take what you read above with a grain of salt and go look for better advice elsewhere. 🙂

Shotgun Montage BF:BC2

Great shotgun montage by TheXBLJMOR, but what I wanted to draw your attention to was his quick reload of the weapon. When reloading, once your ammo count has increased change weapon and back again and your weapon will be reloaded. Here’s a forum thread on the technique:

  1. Reload
  2. Wait until your ammo counter says the gun is reloaded (the animation won’t be finished yet)
  3. Interrupt the reload (ie swapping out weapons, etc)
  4. Kill something
  5. Run out of ammo in magazine
  6. Repeat

Rocking games. Quick summary as it’s la…

Rocking games. Quick summary as it’s late – we won almost all or maybe all our games of Battlefield Bad Company 2 tonight! I unlocked the engineer’s red dot sight, and 4x rifle scope as well as body armour. I also unlocked the Type 88 Sniper rifle even though I was running recon with the trusty M1. I leveled up to 14 too, and earned another 10091 points!

Numerous awards too. We were best squad at least twice. I got best player once, got an smg efficiency, surveillance ops pin, anti vehicle efficiency pin and and “superior service duty” for playing for one whole day! Not bad for a dad who plays for a few hours at night. Got one more dog tag too, Dave got plenty of those. Every few minutes I’d hear, Ooh dog tags!”

Unfortunately there’s a bug in the game where it doesn’t record M1 kills so apparently I’ve never used it. Grrr. I also spotted the magnum ammo bug. The client thinks it’s unlocked at level 14, but servers won’t let you use it until level 15. I’m almost halfway to level 15 anyway 🙂

Thanks to Dave, David and MJ for being such a great squad.

Before the others logged in I had joined a few other games but the squads I was put were rubbish. Attacking on Isla and everyone ignored the helicopters, even as I was calling to my squad to come back. How could they know I was rubbish at flying it? That’s the problem with playing alone, you’re inevitably put into a team that’s losing and someone has rage quit. Hey, I’ll rage quit too so I can’t complain too loudly. I joined David’s game when he logged into PSN, then Dave and finally MJ and we rocked as a squad.

Now that the stats have updated, I see my Win/Loss ratio has gone up to a very healthy 1.12. I only lost one game last night, and I remember that was when I joined a team on Port Nelson right at the end of the game when they only had one base left. So, we won 5 games in a row after that!
I stayed alive slightly longer and my KDR rose by 0.01. More importantly, I seem to have nabbed 3 dog tags! I would probably have four, as I had laid down a motion mine and spotted an enemy running across a road away from me. I snuck up behind him and was this close to getting him when Dave doubled back and shot him! I think I got a motion mine assist anyway, but it was one moment when I felt we had control of the confrontation which is very pleasing.

Defense Tips for Bad Company 2

  1. Isla Inocentes
  2. Port Valdez
  3. Valparasio
  4. Arica Harbour
  5. Laguna Presa
  6. Nelson Bay
