What is Minecraft?

So the other evening, in between killing zombies, David asked me what Minecraft was like and I said I still wasn’t sure and that it was a sandbox game where you built stuff.

Boy, can you build stuff. Check out the following video to see exactly what kind of mad things can be built in the world of Minecraft. Thanks Duck (who was in it!)

Anyway, on this Joystiq post NecroMaster asked, “i’ll probably get downvoted for this, but what IS minecraft? i cant figure out :S”. Surprisingly, he wasn’t downvoted but got a few good replies:

Now what its about really…? Well pretty much take a lego set…make it real, then take harvestable resources from every end of the spectrum and give the player to create things out of various materials (not everything..yet) and throw in a few enemies that can spawn in from the shadows of anything and this is what you get.

It’s Lego, with optional enemies and a never-ending world (more or less). You mine stuff and then convert that stuff into more valuable stuff.

David will be pleased to hear that the latest update added cake too, but sometimes it’s best to leave the cake alone …

So there you have it! I’m not 100% sure it’s for me as I don’t have hours and hours to spend on it. I built a nice big room adjoining my cave on the second day, knocked down the walls of the cave to make it even bigger on the thirda day but now I’m scared to go out in case I get killed by a marauding zombie. And I can hear a creeper at the other side of the wall too.. *gulp*

Blarney Towers

Much later … ok, so I had some time to kill and rather than watch tv or do something productive I created a ~60 block high tower with a spiral staircase and an “in the clouds” platform.

L4D2: Modern Warfare 2 Vacant Survival

“Nah, they’re probably just part of the background.”

This is a short clip from one of the first games myself and David played the other night in Left 4 Dead 2. The map is a remake of the Modern Warfare 2 map Vacant and any MW2 players will immediately recognise it.

Music is Scary Tale in Olde York by the Surf Sluts.

TyeWebb’s recording of a later campaign game in the Carnival with me and David. I think this map is paid-for DLC on Xbox but comes free with the game on PC and Mac. I presume it’s one of those “DLC we had to charge for on Xbox” that Valve complained about. Then how did DICE release Map Pack 7 for free then? Did they swallow the money Microsoft charged them to release that patch?

L4D2 Shenanigans

Just a bit of fun on Left 4 Dead 2 with Duck, DOD and Conor on Xbox. I’ve played survival mode with randoms and some of the campaign levels with friends but I must try some more of those modes with friends. I’d love to try recording our team chat through Skype too if anyone’s up for it?

I discovered l4dmaps.com too. You can download lots of new maps there, but that’s PC only of course.

Oh, if you’re reading this on the blog or your your feed reader, please click through to Youtube and give the video a thumbs up will you? Have to keep the witch happy….

And if you’re a fan of “The Hangover” you’ll like this parody!

I can circle strafe

How long is Bad Company 2 out? March last year isn’t it? Well, Gavin said he learned how to circle strafe the AH-64 and I decided to learn how too. With help from Geoff’s video above I figured it out.

Basically, point at where you want to circle around, press right on the left stick which will strafe to the right. Then with the right stick push left and up-down adjusting the nose to keep it centered on the target. The effect of pushing the right stick adjusts the rotar at the back of the helicopter, thus turning it. (I think that’s right, I need to spend more time in Onslaught perfecting it.)

Oh, full throttle the whole time too!

The Gamer’s Craic

This is a new podcast David and myself will be hosting where we chat with a guest about gaming. The guest will be someone we know from the Battlefield community so it’ll have a bias towards that but we’re going to cover other topics too. If you’re on our friends list watch out!

Check out David’s announcement post on the podcast blog for more details (or not, we’re keeping it suitably vague!)

Bad Company 2 Oasis Helicopter Rage

This is 5 minutes out of a very long 49 minute Bad Company 2 game I played with Duck and DrunkinDunkin on one base on Oasis. I wasn’t in the helicopter, a player with over 6000 helicopter kills was piloting it and tore up our defenses. Thankfully the rest of his team weren’t so good. 🙂

I’d love to hear if you have any tips for Oasis. It’s one map I really have rarely done well in. I think it was Cards or gt who tweeted that he gets on to the AA gun before any blueberries get there to take down any incoming helicopters. Could have done with your help in this game!

PS. Check out the first episode of DON’T REVIVE ME BRO! podcast!

Reverse Engineering the MOS 6502

This is the first part of a great presentation given by Michael Steil at 27C3 last year. The 6502 was the CPU used on many 8 bit computers of the eighties like the Commodore 64, Apple I and II and NES.

It’s an hour long presentation split into 6 parts, I’ve only watched the part above but it brings me back 20 years when I used to code in assembler using an Action Replay cartridge on my C64.

Check out this post for the rest of the presentation. I’ll be watching them later tonight.
