Colm on #linux pointed at an article I had previously read in the Sunday Times which had reminded me of my own unfortunate troubles with the US immigration just over a year ago.
That reminded me that I should look for the Sunday Times website which I did, and it redirects to the most recent edition. Great reading there, especially their D-Day coverage.
Here’s the article about that Brother Columbanus I mentioned yesterday. (Unfortunately you have to register to view that content!)

Spiders, spiders.. everywhere!
Sitting down to read the Sunday Times yesterday what crawls out from underneath the paper? *shudder* Any sane person would get something to either trap or kill the spider but I grabbed my camera and snapped a few photos!
FWIW, when I was finished I trapped the spider and released it into the garden. It’s bad luck to kill a spider isn’t it?

C64 Game Fans?
Damn, when someone visited by searching for Godian Tomb on Google I just had to go look for it myself.. and I found lots more too, even Mr Robot although something tells me it won’t hold quite the same attraction as it did over 10 years ago.
If only I could play it on a decent portable device! The keyboard on my 7650 is fairly knackered from playing Stunt Car Racer, oops! Can anyone suggest a pda with a good C64 emulator? Not as if I have the money for it, mind, but one can always dream eh?
Much Later… I’m just after trying out Gordian Tomb and the version on that site is one I know very well… I coded the “crack” intro on it! Wow, that must have been some 14 or more years ago! I wonder how they got that copy?
Edit on 09/12/2008. Bah. c64unlimited.net is gone. All links removed.
I don't feel like it, I just want you to hold me
We really shouldn’t laugh should we?
I never have quite figured out why the sexual urges of men & women differ so much. And I never have figured out the whole Venus and Mars thing….
Google has more links in case of link death. Thanks Dot for sending that on!
SAP – Seymour Hersh
I heard this discussed on the radio on the way to work this morning and promptly forgot about it. Must read it at home tonight!
The roots of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal lie not in the criminal inclinations of a few Army reservists but in a decision, approved last year by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, to expand a highly secret operation, which had been focussed on the hunt for Al Qaeda, to the interrogation of prisoners in Iraq. Rumsfeld’s decision embittered the American intelligence community, damaged the effectiveness of élite combat units, and hurt America’s prospects in the war on terror.
From the Deadly to the Bizarre!
This guy had a lucky escape! Builder survives nailgun accident – see the xray! 6 nails in his head! Wow!
And then there was the woman who bought 10,000 Mars bars.. Won’t need to worry about breakfast for a while! hehe.
And it seems IRC is under attack!
Still, I.R.C. perhaps most closely resembles the cantina scene in “Star Wars”: a louche hangout of digital smugglers, pirates, curiosity seekers and the people who love them (or hunt them). There seem to be I.R.C. channels dedicated to every sexual fetish, and I.R.C. users speculate that terrorists also use the networks to communicate in relative obscurity.
Sounds like a really bad place. Maybe Bosco lovers congregate there or something? 😛
Lunar Eclipse Tonight!
I just heard on the radio, there’ll be a lunar eclipse tonight and it’s visible from Ireland! Unfortunately, the weather’s turned sour since the great weekend, but hopefully the clouds will clear!
PS. Here’s more about the March 3rd, 2007 eclipse, including some photos and facts and figures!
Mac GIMP? Mac Crap?
You’ve probably already seen this review via the mention on slashdot but I couldn’t let it go by without commenting on it. In the usual Slashdot manner I haven’t read the article yet so I’m not going to defend the Mac version of the GIMP.
All I’ll say is that every photo I publish here is processed using the GIMP. It’s not substantially worse than Photoshop for many tasks, just different. Personally, I can’t stand using Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. I don’t like the way they work, they’re not intuitive to me. I like the GIMP right-click to do everything approach. *shrug*
Different strokes for different folks.
Later… This made it to the GIMP User mailing list too. (but the archives are broken.. sorry!)
Here’s an interesting tip I gleaned from that thread:
Well, when you press the TAB key while in Image Window – all other GIMP windows will disappear (except for other image windows if you have multiple images open).
If you press TAB again the Toolbox will appear, after pressing it next time, all previosly hidden windows will come back.
Bush Vs Bush
Ah, here’s an interesting interview (22MB .mov) between Governer Bush and President Bush. My, how he changed his opinions!
Powerful images, can I print this?
Matt posted a picture of Bush that’s made up from the photos of soldiers killed in Iraq. I heard this was printed in the Mirror Newspaper yesterday. It’s a controversial picture, and Matt received 408 comments on this post!
In related news, a woman lost her job because she took photos of a flag shrouded coffins in a cargo plane. One of the realities of war not broadcast to the public “at home.”
