Colin and Nick discussed video formats this morning on Twitter. Colin said that “iMovie lags like crazy on H.264 video” which might explain why the transitions in my first commentary didn’t render correctly when I did the voiceover in iMovie, and resulted in the video lagging behind the audio later in the video.

Anyway, I went searching, and found MPEG STREAMCLIP which will convert MP4 files to Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). A 596MB file became a gigantic 11GB file! I haven’t tried editing a video with transitions yet but hopefully iMovie will perform better.

PS3 Break

If you haven’t upgraded your PS3 you can probably hack it and PS3 Break is what you need.

Thankfully, if you want to play online you have to update the firmware and this hack is useless to you. Stopped cheaters in their tracks.

Yes, yes, I know it can be used for homebrew and I’m all for that, but 99% of the time it’ll be used to run pirated software. Lots of great comments on the subject here.

I have just completed my first commentary and boy is it bad. Not the gameplay, well, that’s only average. What the hell do I talk about for 14 minutes? I ramble on about retro computers, a bit of WordPress, assembler coding, and a tiny bit of gameplay related chatter.

I edited it all in iMovie 08, on Colin’s recommendation, and it was easy enough to use once I learned a few basic tricks.

I don’t know yet if I’ll make it public, but if you’re really curious about it, send me a DM on Twitter and I’ll send you the url when it’s uploaded. Warning, it’s cringe worthy!

In case you’re wondering, I used HDPVRCapture to record the game. I bought EyeTV the day before but it never worked properly so I opened a ticket on their support system. Finally, today they replied. Turns out the EyeTV 3 only supports the North American (NTSC?) HDPVR. It says so, buried deep down in this page. Don’t worry if you can’t find it, you’ll have to hunt. Thankfully they’re giving me a refund. That’s great because HDPVRCapture only cost me $29.95 and works perfectly!

I’m slowly making my way through all the video editing software in Linux. I’ve tried Cinnerella, Lives, Kdenlive, Openshot and a few others but for one reason or another they’re all lacking. Mainly bugs unfortunately.

Of the ones I tried I like Kdenlive and Openshot and was able to do some decent multi-track editing of a video. Kdenlive crashed quite a few times and I think I failed to create a video. Openshot did really well but then I triggered an odd bug where some clips in the video simply froze. The audio continued but the image displayed was the first frame. I went searching for it and found a discussion of the very problem. Seems to be slightly glitchy 1080×720 video will cause it.

Keep searching …

More plugins releases soon

WP Super Cache, Domain Mapping and Sitewide Tags are all getting quite some attention.

Ron and I have been busy with Domain Mapping and Sitewide Tags.
A new version of Domain Mapping was released a few days ago with a couple of bug fixes and also a new feature that allows you to ignore the “primary domain” on your blogs. It has the potential for duplicate content if a blog can be found at multiple domains but some people need this feature. With careful organisation of content this can be avoided.

Sitewide Tags is almost ready for a new release. Ron added thumbnail support last week, and I checked in code last weekend to fill in the tags page with posts made before the plugin was installed. It needs testing, and if you’re any good at PHP please take a look at the development version on the download page.

WP Super Cache has had a number of bugs squished, preloading works better – it cancels immediately when you click that Cancel button. It also prints the url of the current post being preloaded which is handy if you’re not sure it’s working or not.
I added some extra debugging to make sure the homepage is cached correctly, but you have to enable “extra paranoid checks”. It works fine on my sites but I would really appreciate feedback if you have WordPress installed in a directory, installed in a directory different to where the site is or whatever configuration you might have. If it doesn’t work, the only side effect is that the homepage won’t be cached so it’s easy to spot when there are problems. I want these checks to be active all the time when the new version is finally released so it’s important this works correctly. Grab the development version from the download page and give it a whirl!

Don’t worry about upgrading when the next versions of Super Cache and Sitewide Tags are released. The version number in the development version is the same as the current release so a new version notice will still appear on your dashboard.

I almost forgot. Cookies for Comments has been worked on too! I added code that keeps an eye on how long a visitor reads a post before they post a comment. If the comment is made faster than a certain time the comment is automatically caught. I’ve used it over the weekend here and elsewhere and it’s catching a good number of “real looking” but spammy comments! The development version on the download page is what you’re looking for if you want to try this.

I think I need a P2 blog to post these sort of updates. Blog titles are such a pain sometimes.

“This lvl has been moderated!!i dont know why,i needed to change the logo and name.”

Little Big Planet allows you free rein with your imagination but sometimes creators take inspiration from existing games. Such was the case with this Mario influenced racer. It’s a fun little level, looks beautiful and it’s simple. Just keep R1 down to drive. I’m the sackboy with the cape, my son Adam was the brown fella.

Ironically, I received an email from Youtube stating the following,

“Dear donncha2001,

Your video, I wonder why it was moderated …., may have content that is owned or licensed by Sony Music Entertainment.

No action is required on your part; however, if you are interested in learning how this affects your video, please visit the Content ID Matches section of your account for more information.

Sincerely,
– The YouTube Team”

I wonder if everyone who uploads Little Big Planet gameplay videos receives such an email? Duck said he got 4 of them!

Oh! Hi there Tye!

So we had some great games of Bad Company 2 last night. I was playing for quite a bit with Mike and Duck and sent numerous invites to Tye. When I eventually bumped into him it wasn’t quite in the fashion I expected…

Got some great clips, but it also recorded our voice chat (well, except mine) so I need to configure the PS3 correctly to avoid that in the future. On the other hand, I’m glad I did get Mike’s frantic “Get him! Get him! Get him!” as I danced with an enemy in a small room with knifes out! I was laughing so much it’s probably a good thing I wasn’t recorded!

Edit: Here’s that knife dance. Warning, some of the game chat is NSFW. And a bonus clip too, a sniper montage by Mike!

The other night I had a great session of gaming with Duck, Conor, Tye and Mike. We played COD4 for about 2 hours, and originally Duck and I were going to use Skype but Conor didn’t have a nearby PC so we had to put up with the usual a**holes in the lobby. Not that there were many around, but one guy with his white noise was really annoying.

How’d we do? Mixed bag. We won a few, lost a few and I managed to get a 10 kill streak going in one game!

Armor Lock Fail

One of the new features of Halo Reach are armor (or “armour” if you live in the old world) abilities. I’m not so gone on them, except for the drop shield in a game of Firefight.

  • The jet pack makes you a sitting duck for other players.
  • Sprint gets you around quickly but it takes an age to fire afterwards.
  • Holographic Decoy was fun the first time I tried it but now everyone know what they are.
  • Active Camo scrambles radars telling everyone you’re around.
  • Drop shield is great except other players will of course target it.

And then there’s armor lock. This ability is really useful if you’re playing with a team that’s cooperating and communicating but if you’re playing the lone wolf “Call of Duty” style you’ll probably be out of luck. Even against a noob player like me.
