Babysitting Mama

Wii owners rejoice! News just in that a new title, “Babysitting Mama” will be released this holiday season.

The game promises to bring all the joys and challenges of taking care of a newborn baby to your Nintendo Wii. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? For the most realistic experience of course you have to leave your Wii and TV on all night so it can wake you up from your slumber at 1am, 3am and 5am for feeding. I doubt they’ll have that.

Does this sound fun to anyone? I’m a work-at-home dad; during the day I’m writing and editing stories while parenting our ten-month-old son. On a good day I get to use the bathroom when I need to. On a bad day my eyes glaze over with a thousand-yard stare. I love my kids, but having a baby is a job with no days off, no pause button, and no cheat codes. Turning that experience into a game where the child will never grow up, go to college, and allow you to have a single dinner out with your wife sounds like… fun?

Who gets World of Goo?

I had forgotten about my World of Goo giveaway.

There were two entries, from Fieldoperative and Tomasz making it all the harder to pick the winner.

With the help of random.org I picked one. It was a toss up between 1 and 2. It picked 2 which means Tomasz wins. Email me at donncha @ ocaoimh.ie with your preferred operating system!

Sorry Fieldoperative, wish I had another spare copy to give away!

Google for Pacman

So, Pacman turned 30 in the last few days and Google put a Pacman game on it’s front page for the day! If you missed it, you can still play Pacman online.

Apparently it’s written in HTML, Javascript and CSS with Flash only used for sound so it will work almost as well on iPhones and iPads.

The Guardian has a great post on it, as does Dave and many others.

Got online and Mick was just heading off…

Got online and Mick was just heading off so I hopped into a game of Bad Company 2 squad deathmatch. Thankfully I joined a team with 2 guys using their mics so it was fun. We won the first round fairly decisively, I got 8 kills, but didn’t do so well in the following games. KDR was steady around 1 or slightly below.

I joined a game of rush when those two left and joined a game attacking on Port Valdez. Alpha was already taken but since nobody was using their mic I wasn’t told until I had ridden a quad up to the smoking ruins of the building. Mick logged in and joined my squad so it was a relief to hear a friendly voice. Dunno what the rest of our squad made of our banter about the weather and the nice day we had today 🙂

We fairly quickly took each base, on the last base I got into a HUMV Mick was shooting from and drove us up to Alpha with the idea of setting the bomb there quickly. I did, but unfortunately a recon guy on the defending team had planted C4 on it and detonated it. Silly bugger killed me but also damaged his own crate! I spawned later as an engineer but I needn’t have bothered. We controlled their helicopter and the game finished quickly.

KDR has gone up by 0.01 to 0.71, got an extra 4 dog tags too. Mostly in SDM. Got a gold star for my an-94! Win/Loss ratio went down by 0.01 to 1.33. Oh well.

PS. check out Dave’s blog. He’s posting footage from some of our games!

Played some great games of Bad Company 2…

Played some great games of Bad Company 2 tonight. Started off with Mark, then Mick joined shortly after and we stopped the opposition on the first base of Nelson Bay! Woah!

We did lose one game I think, on Laguna Presa. Teams changed and they evened out but they were great fun to play. Defending the last Bravo crate on Laguna Presa was tense, especially as they had set a bomb with only a ticket or two left but we won eventually.

Uzi is pretty good, I used that tonight for the first time. Took down the Blackhawk on Port Valdez with a CG after tracing it. It flew straight overhead, whoosh, boom! Game ended in a win a few seconds later as Mick defended the bomb on Bravo.

Ranked to 21, got positive KDR almost all the time and unlocked the M16 and USAS-12.
Got a Gold Star for my AN-94 already. 144 kills. Only 57 yesterday.

KDR has increased by 0.03 to 0.70, Win/Loss ratio is 1.34. They’re headed in the right direction!

Bloody hell, the AN-94 rocks. Too many h…

Bloody hell, the AN-94 rocks. Too many hours playing Bad Company 2 tonight but once I got into a squad with David, Mick, Ross and then Muse we tore up the opposition. My KDR is inching up too, from 0.63 to 0.67!

In at least 2 games we actually managed to hold off the enemy attackers at the first base. It almost happened in Arica Harbour, and certainly happened while defending Isla. They didn’t even manage to get one crate on Isla in that game! I think most of the attackers were playing recon and stayed on the hill! It was almost too easy.

Having more than one person with a tracer really helps on levels with helicopters. Mick was a medic but traced several and I took them down on Valpairaso on a CG! On the other hand, when we were attacking Dave piloted the helicopter around the battlefield of the first base for several minutes acting as a mobile spawn point for the rest of us. A circling Apache would have lasted all of 20 seconds against us! I wonder if people on the other team were playing as squads or as lone wolves?

Seems I got my first demolition 2.0 kill last night. I think that was when I took Alpha 1 in Arica Harbour using a tank to destroy the building. Woo! I also got an explosive efficiency pin, long service radio warfare (100 tracer plants) and exemplary battlefield knowledge (10 silver stars). I unlocked the AN-94 (if that wasn’t obvious!), the M416, the UZI, M14 and Neostead 2000. I also unlocked the 4x scope for recons.

Oh yeah, had my best ever game in terms of kills last night. 30 kills in one game!

Edit: Dave already has some footage up on Youtube from the games last night. Obviously not a fan of the Lighthouse Family!

And more footage from the same game from this post. He blogged the night’s gameplay too.

Love the Engineer

This guide to the engineer’s 9A-91 on Bad Company 2 appeared on reddit earlier today. It’s the first gun engineers get and fairly crummy. Still, you have to use it to unlock the other weapons and upgrades so make the most of it at close to medium range. Pity the included video shows the player dying so many times. Not such a great advertisement for the gun!

It appears that at least on PS3 I’ve had most success with the Scar-L even though I’ve played a lot more with the XM8 Compact. Surprised me. What gun do you prefer to use as an engineer?

Since the patch the engineer has become one of my favourite classes. It’s deadly against helicopters and land based vehicles now the tracer is so fast. In the following video by Blame Truth on Valparaiso his squad all equipped with tracer darts. Everyone traced the choppers, he took them out, and the assault classes dropped ammo boxes for him to replenish his rockets!

While you’re here, check out his first BC2 video. Level 3 and he got 51 kills in one game. Nice.
