My Name Is Yu Ming

What language would you learn if you were coming to a little country called Ireland? My Name Is Yu Ming is a film about a Chinese student who learns Irish so he can start a new life in Ireland. Unfortunately most Irish people don’t speak Irish..
Even if you don’t speak Irish you’ll get a kick out of this great little film as it’s subtitled. Go watch it! (Thanks Donal!)

My Linux Webcam

When I bought me PC last year it came with a small little webcam which never worked for me until today when I plugged it in and Ubuntu Linux detected it using the Spca5xx driver. This is what the kernel reported:
“USB SPCA5XX camera found. SONIX sn9c102 + Pas106”
Easycam made it easy enough to install new drivers, and Camorama is a useful tool to control it. (via)

Unfortunately this isn’t very exciting for a number of reasons:

  • It has a manual focus and doesn’t handle changes in light very well.
  • I can’t get it to capture more than 176×144 352×288.
  • There’s no busy road or traffic to see from my window. I could point it at the LEDS on my DSL router?

Oh well! That was fun for five minutes!

An exciting scene in blarney today

The TVArk – television museum

Ryan found the TVArk! Ryan has linked directly to a few ads such as the old Kia Ora one from 1984 and remember the Trebor Soft Mints one set in a strange and soft world? That’s from 1987!
Lots more on the TVArk site itself, Yes Ryan, I’ll have to have a good look around this site tonight!

Carole Coleman: "I wanted to slap him"

Carole Coleman made headlines when she interviewed George Bush last year in the White House. Here was a reported who didn’t want to hear the same regurgated speel again and again.
In this extract, she tells why, I wanted to slap him, and recalls the aftermath of her intereview with “the leader of the free world” too.
(Side note.. nowhere is Carole COleman quoted as saying “I Wanted to slap him”, did the Times take creative license with the title of their lead story?)

Meanwhile, Andrew Sullivan takes Bush on over his nomination of Harriet Miers to, “be one of only nice justices on the Supreme Court of the United States.”

Unicef bombs the Smurfs in fund-raising campaign for ex-child soldiers

Unicef bombed the Smurf village in a new ad campaign to raise money. This has been doing the rounds for a few days and as one Metafilter userpointed out, “what’s sadder, bombed smurfs…or the fact that people are so unfased by bombed people that we have to resort to bombed smurfs…news at 11”.
Says something about our “caring” society.
