Matt Damon: on fatherhood and acting

Two quotes from a Sunday Times interview with Matt Damon, star of the Bourne series of movies. He and his wife, Luciana Barroso, have a 14 month old baby daughter and despite all the money and lavish lifestyle, they have some of the same experiences all new parents have ..

“Sometimes I wish I could go back to sleeping on the couch,” he says. “I think back to those days when I was sleeping on friends’ couches. For years I had two duffel bags and I went from set to set and everything I had in the world was in those two bags. I didn’t have a house. I had nothing. And I loved that and there was incredible freedom in it; I could be in and out of a place in a minute – I could have everything on my body and moving. And now I have 20 bags and cribs and strollers and Pack ’n Plays.”

Last night my daughter was up all night,” he says, rubbing his eyes. “My wife tries to help me when I’m working – she tries to do everything at night so I can rest, but the reality is that when you’re in a room with a baby who’s crying it doesn’t matter whether or not you’re the one who’s changing the diaper, you’re still going to be awake.

“Halfway through the movie Paul Greengrass [the director] looked at me and said, ‘You look terrible.’ I told him, ‘I’m sorry. I’m awake all night with the baby’, to which he said, ‘No, it’s really good. She came along just at the right time – she’s really helping your performance.’ In the previous two Bourne films I’d have to achieve that same ragged look by staying out all night in Paris.”

Not all of us have to jet across the world or party all night in Paris to look grubby in the morning but you get the idea. When a baby comes along your life is turned upside down!

Finally, first I’ve heard of him, but apparently Jimmy Kimmel has a long running gag surrounding Matt Damon. Unfortunately Matt “freaks out” when he finally gets on the show.

It's Toddtime at Sacred Heart

Some said “Even The Todd wouldn’t wear those” but I think he would. In a recent episode of Scrubs, Todd had a tshirt with the url, thetoddtime.com emblazoned on it. Fearful for what I’d find there, I visited thetoddtime.com and discovered something so unreal, so shocking that I had to share it with you.

If the Quicktime movie doesn’t load for you, someone kindly uploaded it to YouTube as well. Click the “Read more” link to view it as I want to spare the sensibilities of the casual visitor here. It’s so YEEEEA!!!

Unlucky 13? Oooer!

  • What would you like to know about me? Apparently a company in Dublin is selling private information.
  • Paul’s friend was dumped over Facebook when his ex-girlfriend changed her status to “single” and “up for it”. Paul, that was mean to laugh! 🙂
  • I would love to see the referers to this post when it makes it’s way into Google. I’m sure Grandad will oblige in a future post.
  • Online photo sharing on pix.ie via Czajkowski. Anyone else tried them?
  • Kae says php.ie could be coming soon!
  • Firefox 3 talk by Marcio Galli in Cork on August 8th. What’s in store in version 3?
  • I got my first Facebook invitation. Should I sign up?

Fred the Band played in the Opera House in Cork recently, after a tour of the US where the following video was shot (after the jump). Their first album was great, the second album was so-so being a bit more of the same thing. You can hear a portion of their new single on their website above. They are absolutely brilliant live however. I took photos of them last year in the Spiegeltent. I never did post photos of the crowd surfing …

Way back in March I took photos at the shooting of a music video for Stanley Super 800. Finally, you can see the resulting video for yourself. No, I’m not in the video, I was in the background with my camera! They did a great job of it, and if you’ve been to Cork, watch out for Scotts on Caroline Street, Patrick’s Hill and the alley across from the College of Art on Emmet Place. Great stuff!

Feeling Lucky, Punk?

I know what you’re thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I’ve kinda lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

Well, today you might be feeling lucky, but when confronted by Dirty Harry I doubt anyone would feel the comfort of lucky number 7. Today is however the 7th day of the 7th month, 2007 so you never the know. The punk might take a chance. As today is 07-07-07 I can only imagine the hysteria surrounding the same day in 1977. I were a youngster then so I’ll have to rely on some of you older gentlemen and ladies to fill me in on the wonders of that day.

I was intrigued and I did some extensive research and found that yes, many people do believe the superstition and think the date 07-07-07 is lucky. There’s even a Flickr group dedicated to today.

Then I got bored and went looking for Dirty Harry trivia and movie clips. Here’s that famous scene.

I am legend – last man standing?

This reminds me of a book I read a few years ago. A man off hiking in the country hurt his leg and recovered in a remote log cabin. When he hiked back down everyone was dead. Almost. Eventually he found other survivors of the plague, and the story follows his life and the lives of his children as they descend from civilized community to half naked hunter gatherers stumbling away into a new and threatening world.

I found this trailer for the new Will Smith movie, “I Am Legend” via Anthony’s blog and it could be rather good. As is my want to do these days I checked Youtube for a trailer and found a fan made film and rehearsal clips from the movie. After watching the following movie, check out the comments. Not too many people are happy Will Smith will be playing the lead role! To be honest I though I was watching Independence Day all over again!

Rehearsal clips seem to be shot by local people in New York, not any “behind the scenes” videos by the production staff. Here are a few: video 1, video2 (Will Smith makes a brief appearance in this one), and this one has it’s good moments.

I’m going to look for the book first.

PS. Want to download the trailer? There are probably plugins to do it, but I found that running strings on the .mov loader file displayed the actual movie file. ‘Course I’m only going to watch it once or twice so why bother downloading it? Ho hum! Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to do something, just because we can do it! I will say it looks very impressive full screen.

PPS. Wikipedia page on the book, and the film. Don’t read if you hate spoilers!

Star trekkin' across the universe

Star Trekkin’ by The Firm

I can’t believe this song is 20 years old! My parents bought the original album on tape and we listened to it over and over. The other songs on the tape were more boring to my 11 year old ears but I remember they grew on me as time passed. I have no idea where the tape is now unfortunately.

What would we do without Youtube? Write original content? Gasp!

Star Trekkin’ is a song released in 1987 by a band called The Firm (not to be confused with the British rock group or the hip-hop supergroup of the same name). It is a parody of the original TV series of Star Trek.

Just in case that wasn’t enough, and on the subject of songs that get stuck in your head. The “Hold a chicken in the air” part of the Chicken Song by Spitting Image was stuck in my head for several years. Don’t press play. You’ve been warned!
