Breaking News – Risk-taking boys do not get the girls

Following on from my previous look at men, women and cars. Rebecca also pointed at this story: Risk-taking boys do not get the girls!

WHETHER it’s driving too fast, bungee-jumping or reckless skateboarding, young men will try almost anything to be noticed by the opposite sex. But a study of attitudes to risk suggests that the only people impressed by their stunts are other men.

But hey, if you want to impress the guys… 🙂

Relationships: Speed up, dear or you'll run out of testosterone

While on the general topic of cars, here’s a laughable Sunday Times article from the Driving section. Do they think their readership is composed of car mad neanderthal, testoserone overflowing males?
I for one would love to be driven around, by anyone.

Passion in a marriage can be killed when a woman gives too many driving instructions to a man. And when women are driving men around all the time you can bet that couple are not having much sex any more – that behaviour doesn’t foster increasing testosterone, which is part of the attraction between a man and a woman.

"Young People of Ireland, I Love You"

Pope John Paul II has just been laid to rest in the Vatican. It’s strange how emotional that makes me feel.
You can follow further coverage on or The Pope blog and elsewhere.
You can read more about the Pope’s visit to Ireland at crookedtimber.org. (also look at Ditching Constantine which explores the idea of Church as Empire)

7dayshop.com – No Warranties in Europe

I used 7dayshop.com fairly regularly in the past to purchase memory and the occasional camera, and most of the time it went without a hitch.

I’m waiting on a camera from them at the moment too but it was ordered before I knew the following: they ship US sourced products with US warranties! Reviews are mixed with some people having good experiences and others bad.

If you do find yourself without cause to complain about an online store what can you do? If you live in the EU there are laws regarding distance selling (UK version).
When you receive the goods you have a 7 working day cooling off period during which you can send the items back to the retailer without giving a reason. This is akin to browsing in a shop and not buying. You may have to pay the postage to return the goods however.

7dayshop, in their camera policies page do state that they’ll pay the postage if a manufacturing defect is found within 7 days or less.
If you have the item for more than 7 days you must contact them via their support page. It’s not clear whether they’ll have the item repaired/replaced or not, and later on they say, “If the item was purchased more than 1-year ago, then the warranty period is up, and you must contact the manufacturer directly – not us – to arrange for a repair to be made at your expense.”
But if the warranty wasn’t valid in the first place…

The Oasis.ie page on consumer affairs has links to more information that should broadly apply across the EU.

Later.. I don’t recommend 7dayshop any more. Read my 7dayshop review and please avoid them!

Where to get memory cards?

For future reference. My brother asked where he should get memory sticks for his new camera. I asked on #linux.. Here’s a few suggestions if you live in Ireland or the UK.

WordPress.. earn a buck releasing free software

So, Matt accepted articles for publication on the WordPress website that are not WP related. They are (were? The Google searches linked to don’t return anything) there for generating revenue and nothing more.
There are plenty of ways to make money doing free software, but they usually mean doing work for someone else and sometimes that code doesn’t get released. Or you rely on the goodwill of others to donate and that doesn’t happen often!

Matt’s done a huge amount of work for WordPress and I wish him well finding another source of revenue to cover his hosting costs, compensation for his time and other costs.

Sony DSC-T3 vs Minolta Dimage z2

My sister’s boyfriend has the rather sexy black version of the Sony DSC-T3 digital camera. It’s got an absolutely huge LCD screen on the back, and it’s awfully slim. 7day shop <a href="http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_4_409_40908&products_id=99854"have it for about 359 Euro, but for a bit less I could get the much more capable Konica Minolta Dimage Z2 with it’s 10x optical zoom!
It’ll be a second camera to serve in situations when I don’t want to take an expensive Canon 20D out.
Which to choose? I’m very drawn to the Sony, as it’ll use the memory sticks I already own!
Matt – take a look at the Z2, looks like a good camera for you!
