Three dog tags

Mixed bag of gaming last night, and the fact I was tired after a long day didn’t help. Started off getting slaughtered first and then joined another game where we did much better. I touched upon the games in my matchmaking post below.

Attacking on Isla I was shot by a sniper, from the mainland. Through the killcam I noticed he was accompanied by 2 others, sitting under a tree next to their tent. Luckily they were still there when I spawned, nearly scaring the **** out of Dave when I spawned behind him and forgot to tell him!

Anyway, Dave was on the road, so I doubled back. Going carefully down the hill I spotted my friends. They had a barbeque going too and the smell of roasting meat was something to behold! Rather than disturb their camping too much I elected not to shoot, but prepared to get my knife out. Three quick stabs and the barbeque had ended, the tent was in tatters and the wookies had decided to book into a hotel next time.

Later on another map someone on our squad managed to tracer the Blackhawk and it was a delight to see my CG round fly through the air and bring down that aircraft. Got 2 kills out of it too.

Engineers rock on Arica Harbour

You gotta love the engineer class when playing on Arica Harbour in Bad Company 2. Whether attacking or defending on the first base they’re very useful due to the large number of vehicles on each side. Instead of an RPG or CG I equipped mines and made a dent in the attacking armour. 3 kills with mines! Woo!

Good thing too because I don’t think much of the primary weapons they get. I’m sure I used the M1 during that round.

Positive Bad Company 2 Results

Celebrate when you’re doing well! The following screenshots were taken of my stats during this gaming session and I was very pleased with myself.

I haven’t played much in the last 2 days but I did play 2 rounds with a (mostly) good group of guys yesterday evening. There was one annoying wookie on my squad who persisted in staying well back from the main fighting. I mean like, 1 base back far back from the fighting. I spawned on him once and cursed him for having to run so far to join the action again. I could have sworn we lost one game and then won the second game while defending but my stats say I won both games. Is that a bug?

Bad Company 2 Shotguns

Spurred on by the videos below I decided to give the shotguns in Bad Company 2 a go yesterday evening. I played about 15 minutes of a game of Rush on Arica Harbour. I joined the game late when our team was about to lose Alpha and then quickly lost Bravo in the first base and the fight in the town went just as quickly too.

The shotguns (pre patch) are great, within their limitations. You’ve obviously got reduced range and on a wide open map like Arica Harbour they’re not ideal but in close combat when the other team had bombed the third Bravo it was effective. According to my stats I got 4 kills with them. 2 for each of the 870 and Saiga, and 1 headshot for each too! I preferred the Saiga for it’s semi auto fire, and switched back and forth between magnum ammo and extra shells so I couldn’t really tell a difference in such a short game.

The two videos below give conflicting advice. Use whatever suits you best. 🙂

I always wondered about this. If you quit during a game of Rush does that count as a loss on your stats? I don’t think so. My “rounds played” and win/loss haven’t changed as I never finished the game I was playing.

We started off badly. Dave and I. He joined me and the team I was initially matched with overran us in every game. They used helis to drop off soldiers behind our lines, they used mobile spawn points effectively, they beat us to a pulp. Dave blogged about the night’s gameplay too.

Unfortunately my PS3 disconnected twice. The first time it totally crashed and needed to be rebooted, and the second time I had just flanked a recon and an assault guy on a roof. I stabbed the assault guy as he was closer and moved away to hit the recon guy when I got a black screen and was disconnected! ARGH! I was so pissed off. I checked my stats in the game later I didn’t get a dog tag for that kill. FFS. I was fit to …

After I reconnected we thought a strategic retreat from that game was in order and eventually found ourselves against a better matched team. We won several rounds, even holding them off at the second base in Nelson Harbour and the first base in Port Valdez. I stayed in the construction site there for most of that round. First time I had done that and went mad cutting down trees, spotting and taking down enemies. Got a killstreak of 8 for my efforts! The construction site was taken by three enemy at one point, they started to use the heavy MG and watch the field of battle in front, not keeping an eye on the stairs. We rushed back, I was trailing having spawned below and I caught sight of Dave getting another 2 dog tags to add to his considerable collection.

My handy tracer came out too and helped me plant a few CG rockets on tanks, but I was quite proud of myself hitting a tank across the map without tracing it.

On Port Nelson we quickly lost the second Bravo station. I was heading over there when I saw at least 3 of our team outside the building but they failed to stop it. Regardless, we held the attackers off in fine fashion at Alpha.

Always pick up kit, especially if you’re out of ammo! I was leveling up the recon class but I ran out of ammo and David and I were on the roof of the second Bravo on Nelson Bay so no quick access to an assault ammo box. Unfortunately David was taken out by a sniper in a tree and he hit me too but I survived. I was able to get David’s medic kit. Unfortunately by the time I had made sure the coast was clear I was too late to revive him but I made good use of his LMG spawn trapping the other team as they rushed to defuse Alpha. He spawned on me, we took the other crate and moved up!

My KDR has increased to 0.61 (had a positive KDR in a number of games), a nice jump of 0.02. I leveled up to 15, Staff Sergeant III and unlocked magnum ammo which is a beast. For someone who can’t aim to (sometimes) save his life it’s a huge help.

Thanks to Dave, David, and minato88 who made a great squad to fight alongside!

Rocking games. Quick summary as it’s late – we won almost all or maybe all our games of Battlefield Bad Company 2 tonight! I unlocked the engineer’s red dot sight, and 4x rifle scope as well as body armour. I also unlocked the Type 88 Sniper rifle even though I was running recon with the trusty M1. I leveled up to 14 too, and earned another 10091 points!

Numerous awards too. We were best squad at least twice. I got best player once, got an smg efficiency, surveillance ops pin, anti vehicle efficiency pin and and “superior service duty” for playing for one whole day! Not bad for a dad who plays for a few hours at night. Got one more dog tag too, Dave got plenty of those. Every few minutes I’d hear, Ooh dog tags!”

Unfortunately there’s a bug in the game where it doesn’t record M1 kills so apparently I’ve never used it. Grrr. I also spotted the magnum ammo bug. The client thinks it’s unlocked at level 14, but servers won’t let you use it until level 15. I’m almost halfway to level 15 anyway 🙂

Thanks to Dave, David and MJ for being such a great squad.

Before the others logged in I had joined a few other games but the squads I was put were rubbish. Attacking on Isla and everyone ignored the helicopters, even as I was calling to my squad to come back. How could they know I was rubbish at flying it? That’s the problem with playing alone, you’re inevitably put into a team that’s losing and someone has rage quit. Hey, I’ll rage quit too so I can’t complain too loudly. I joined David’s game when he logged into PSN, then Dave and finally MJ and we rocked as a squad.

Now that the stats have updated, I see my Win/Loss ratio has gone up to a very healthy 1.12. I only lost one game last night, and I remember that was when I joined a team on Port Nelson right at the end of the game when they only had one base left. So, we won 5 games in a row after that!
I stayed alive slightly longer and my KDR rose by 0.01. More importantly, I seem to have nabbed 3 dog tags! I would probably have four, as I had laid down a motion mine and spotted an enemy running across a road away from me. I snuck up behind him and was this close to getting him when Dave doubled back and shot him! I think I got a motion mine assist anyway, but it was one moment when I felt we had control of the confrontation which is very pleasing.

First major session of Bad Company 2 on …

First major session of Bad Company 2 on the Xbox in quite a while and it was a mixed bag. I was joined by Eddie, Gavin and another player I didn’t know, Cerebrus (I think?)

The team we were playing against were very good although they relied on snipers quite a lot in some games. When attacking they softened us up with mortar strikes and when available helicopters. I think we won one game and possibly lost 2? The games last so long it’s hard to tell.

On Nelson Bay we were attacking and I used the mortar strike to good effect, thankfully not launching a strike on any nearby trees. I took down the first Alpha building and the last Bravo building went down with a little help from my explosives. Only got one kill from the strikes, but destruction 2.0 netted me another 2 kills I think.

On Isla we thought we were doing well. They were held off for about 45 tickets. They barely made it on to the island. Then they changed tack, they were well organised launching flanking attacks around the back and sides and quickly taking both bases. Same story with the second base. We held them off for ages and they managed to flank us. When they set a bomb in Bravo a whole squad spawned on the soldier who was there. I don’t think they knew about the simple way to get the second Alpha. When we were attacking I got that with a few burst of fire! 🙂
While defending on Isla I got into the heli in the last base but we didn’t kill one single player and unfortunately our base was overrun in a matter of a minute or two. It was awful.

Tough games, but good to play with the guys on Xbox again!

Now that my stats have updated, I leveled to 12, my KDR went down 0.02, but Win/Loss ratio went up by 0.02 since the game earlier! That was a nice surprise! I’m reminded I got a Bronze star for the Saw, we also got best squad at least once and I unlocked the Carl Gustav, MP-412, high power tank optics and the Assault shotgun attachment. Oh yes, 2 kills for Destruction 2.0! Woo!

So, last night’s gameplay was a game of…

So, last night’s gameplay was a game of two halves. I lucked out joining a reasonably good squad by myself. We lost the first game, but won the next two defending. Dave joined me during the second game where I defended the town in Arica Harbour with a tank. Only got 6 kills in that game but plenty of spot assists and kill assists.
We defended on Port Valdez and held off the opposition on the first base to a win too!

At the end of that game Geoff pinged us so we squaded up with him and a friend, joined a game attacking Arica Harbour but then HyperMole joined so we all left the squad. Apparently non squad members can all talk together! I never realised this as NOBODY uses mics, let alone people not in squads. That didn’t last long though as the spawn point is so far away. Dave and myself squaded up and the others formed a squad too. I should have figured out at this stage that Dave and myself would be better off playing against a team matched to our skill level but you live and learn.

Unfortunately the next few games didn’t go so well. We lost attacking Arica Harbour on the last base, and then while defending on the same map lost again. A nemesis is a player who kills you 5 times. I had two of them. I did get a payback pin though, and Dave, “the knife ninja”, got one of their dog tags!

Even though we lost a few times my W/L ratio jumped up by 0.04, and my skill rating almost doubled. My KDR took a dive by 0.01% unfortunately but this proves that the skill rating depends on the skill level of those you kill. We were definitely matched against a great team, well beyond my abilities anyway. The more you kill higher skill level players the higher your skill level goes. The opposite is true too so all my deaths didn’t contribute much to their skill level. 🙂

I leveled up to 13, unlocked the final medic gun, unlock ALT fire too and I’m about halfway to 14. Looking forward to trying out magnum ammo.

I dodged a roadkill death last night in …

I dodged a roadkill death last night in Battlefield Bad Company 2. As a defender I was shooting at a UAV from afar when I ran low on ammo for the M60. I ducked behind cover to reload and something made me look around while doing so. There was the UAV hovering by my shoulder!
In a panic I switched weapons and unfortunately only darted the vehicle (30 points, thank you!), switched back to my LMG and with a few bullets left in the gun destroyed the flying bug UAV!

Dave and myself played a few games of Battlefield Bad Company last night. They were very tough. We need more PS3 players to join us in our squad as the two of us are definitely at a disadvantage. As attackers in one game we just barely managed to take the base with about 7 tickets left. In another game on Isla we defended but were totally overrun on all but the very last base.

On Arica Harbour we had some fun attacking the second bases. We spawned just as other squads in our teams took the tanks so Dave got into one of the light transports and I hopped on the gun. We raced down to Alpha in the town where we tried unsuccessfully to blow the door on that crate with grenades. We failed miserably. Dave shouted, “Let’s go for Bravo!” and we dashed across the road. He set the charge and we raced upstairs, I stayed at the top of the stairs with my sights on the crate and sure enough about 4 enemy soldiers came in to defuse the bomb. None of them managed it and we got Bravo! We eventually got Alpha and I think won that game.

My KDR is nothing to write home about but my win/loss ratio has crept back up to 1.00 which I’m happy about.

PS. I just remembered. My brother in law Mike had a go of the multiplayer game earlier and while his team won the game his KDR didn’t help my stats! I’m partly to blame though, I kept telling him, press B, press B, press B when he was using a PS3 controller … In other news, I lost the game I joined when I was showing him the ropes. I was fuming when I got into an Apache helicopter, shouted at my squad to come back and join me and I didn’t hear a peep from them. Someone from another squad got in with me!

Smoking kills, I should know because I killed an enemy in Bad Company 2 with a smoke grenade. Bet he was surprised!

Tough battles tonight. The other team were well organised and we lost 3 and won 1. Or maybe we were just crap? I doubt it because we got best squad at least once and we were top or near top of the leaderboard too.

Thanks to Dave, CavScout and RunAwayPancake for all their excellent team work. I stayed on way too long! Half an hour, that’s all I was going to play. Two hours later …

I did unlock the recon motion sensor, the MP-412 and the advanced optics for the tank, received the “Squad Teamwork Ops” award though. In a brief game on the Xbox earlier in the evening I unlocked the mortar and had the good luck to join a game on the winning side!
