Mafia II is 75% off on Steam right now. I’ve played about 2 hours of the game and it’s an enjoyable sandbox world very like Grand Theft Auto IV, but set in the 1940’s.
Just be aware that you might be paying over the odds by as much as 48%, depending on where you live. Ask a US friend to gift it for you if you can!
The wonderful thing about PC games is the competition among online retailers and the lower than console prices charged for most games. While Xbox Live now has older full price games for download they’re usually given a premium price too. Steam and the other online PC game stores regularly have sales where even big name games are offered at a discount.
Here are a few links for keeping track of what sales are going on plus price comparison sites:
First up is Steamprices.com where you can compare the prices of most games in Euro, Sterling and US Dollars. What becomes obvious is that people paying in Euros are over charged more often than not. Boo!
Steamgamesales.com and Didimatic.com are great for tracking what’s on sale on Steam and other online stores. You can subscribe to both in your RSS reader but the former being better because you can limit it to regional sales.
The Big Download Blog is a great resource too, listing the bigger sales in the main stores and elsewhere. Worth subbing to that too.
Finally, there are online stores where you can buy CD keys cheaply. These stores buy the keys in less expensive regions and then allow people in richer areas to buy these legitimate keys at knock down prices. Here’s a thread on boards.ie about them. I haven’t tried them and responses are mixed. Buyer Beware!
Oh, if you know someone in another region served by Steam and the prices there are cheaper you could ask them to buy games for you and then pay them via PayPal for the gift. Thanks Alex, I owe you a few drinks next time we meet! 🙂
Yes well, I’d rather have some free gold but this budget shooter, Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West is free to play all weekend on PC. Fire up your Steam client and the game will download when you click the link in the news page. Or so I presume it will as I haven’t tried it yet. The game is also 75% off which is a pretty good deal.
Monday Night Combat is 33% off now on Steam, and it’s free to play until Sunday next. Restart your Steam client and the news popup will have a link to download the game.
I played the game with Tye a few weeks back and was less than enamored with it but who’s up for some gaming this weekend in it?
This Half Life 2 mod, Dino D-Day is seeing a commercial release this month on Steam. I’ve never heard of this game but the Big Download Blog is giving away 100 invites to try the beta and I just got one so must give that a go soon!
Youtube commentator Mileycyrusthevirus has moved on from Bad Company 2 and is playing MechWarrior Living Legends. It’s a free mod of Crysis Warhead (that was on sale during the Steam Sale!) which I have so I might go look for it. Can’t beat huge mechs, jets and tanks fighting out all over the place can you?
Err, I don’t know what it’s like. It was released on the Mac a few days ago and I installed it last night on my measly Macbook but it crashes each time I start it. Oh well.
I just spotted a two page feature in GamesTM listing their top 10 multiplayer games:
Mario Kart
Bomberman
Street Fighter
Halo
Micro Machines
Battlefield
Worms
Pac-man Vs
Team Fortress 2
Starcraft
What? No Modern Warfare 2? Surely they jest!! OMG WTF!
Anyway, the list above reminded me I had the Orange Box for the Xbox, and included on that compilation is Team Fortress 2. Ihaveneverplayedit! Yes, I have never played it! I also only played Portal on my Macbook with frustrating teeth grinding slow results.
Will I play TF2? I’d like to but probably not unless someone volunteers to join me in a game.
Edit: I found this video of Team Fortress 2, uploaded earlier today so looks like an active community still!
I’m downloading Half Life 2 through Steam on my Macbook now. I don’t expect it to run any better than Portal did however. Glad I have the Orange Box on my Xbox if I want a decent game of either! (Thanks giantbomb!)
