The Wonderful End of the World grows Companion Cubes

As part of the Potato Sack promotion last year a number of indie games received updates featuring content from Valve games. I didn’t take much notice of them at the time but I just found out that The Wonderful End of the World got a secret level with companion cubes! Love the cover of the similarly named Portal song!

Robot Enrichment

I just noticed that Portal 2 now has a store where you can modify your robot. I like the way Valve monetize their games. They bring out free DLC, expanding older games with updates and offering them either free (TF2) or at a steep discount. Then they encourage you to buy hats and personalise your character! Nothing like some of the other grind to play free games I’ve played elsewhere.

Two games spring to mind, both free Android games. Samurai vs Zombies and Garfield Defense. Both play in exactly the same way even though they are apparently by different developers. I swear they used the one game engine and just swapped out graphics and sound.

In both games you collect coins to purchase power ups but those purchases are fairly pricey and by the time you get to level 10 you’ll need to grind and play the level 4 or 5 times to get enough coins to buy an upgrade to finish the level.

Still, not a bad way to spend a few minutes while waiting for the bus or something but to be honest I’d rather use my phone to read a book!

I almost forgot to mention the iOS version of Plants vs Zombies. It received a few updates recently which added the ability to plant flowers that reward you with silver and gold. I only tried it briefly but soon discovered that you need to use fertilizer or the plants will wilt. Of course you have to use real money to buy the fertilizer. *sigh*

L4D2: Help them up!

Lord of Angry mmmmmar person was a bit of a douche when we played L4D2 gibfest tonight. It was great fun until that guy joined. He was fairly useless, charging ahead and shooting us all the time.

We got our revenge when he got knocked down. Duck watched as his health slowly drained away. He wasn’t happy! 🙂

So, here they are for your viewing pleasure. All the TF2 character videos so far produced! Go visit the TeamFortress Youtube channel for these and more!

It’s quite impressive how much support Valve give Team Fortress 2. It’s getting a a bit long in the tooth but it continues to get free updates.

This week you can try the game for free through Steam plus there is apparently going to be a big update today, following on the heels of new weapons for the soldier, scout and demoman. Oh, there’s a secret update for the Pyro too.

Now I’m left wondering how do I pick up these weapons? Do they magically appear on the map when playing or are they leveling upgrades? (via)

Chell in the rain

Check it out here but not if you haven’t completed Portal 2 yet.

Great song and I wish I had noted which PC gaming blog I found this on because they waxed lyrical about it.

Why if Team Fortress 2 gets video recording…

Why, if Team Fortress 2 gets video recording can the combined might of DICE and EA not do the same for Bad Company 2?

I am really impressed with the level of support Valve give some of their games. TF2, L4D2, CSS and other games continue to get updates years after release.

Not got Portal 2 yet

I guess last week was a good time to go on holiday. Portal 2 was released early in the week but it didn’t come out in Europe until Friday (and retailers broke that embargo by a day or two). My copy from Amazon.co.uk should hopefully arrive today. Woohoo!

I ordered the PS3 version like a few of my gaming friends who also have gaming PCs. Unfortunately PSN has been down for the last 5 days and there’s no indication it’s coming back any time soon. This post on Joystiq (and this reddit post has more details) suggests it’s because a custom firmware allowed users to add money to their PSN wallet using fake credit cards. Odd that since they boasted that the latest firmware update was supposed to stop all firmware hacking …

Well, it also turns out that some people over at NGU found out that you could provide fake CC# info and the authenticity of the information was never checked as you were on Sony’s private developer PSN network (essentially a network that Sony trusted). What happened next was extreme piracy of PSN content. Sony realizing the issue here shut down the network.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to playing Portal 2. I know several of you have already finished the game so no spoilers please! I’ve avoided every single review of the game so far except for the glowing tweets from friends. Hopefully when PSN comes back up I can connect my Steam account to my PSN account.

While away from my consoles I’ve been digging into Half Life 2 and I think I’m near the end of the game. What a ride! Such a good game. If you haven’t got it yet, grab the Orange Box on console or login to your Steam account on PC and go buy this beautiful game!
I have to admit I’m playing it on easy setting. I just want to enjoy the experience in the small chunks of time I have available to play games.

In other news the Minecraft server has been updated with the latest version of Bukkit so the Bukkit plugins are back and working!

Update: Late this evening Sony announced that personal information, possibly including credit card details, may have been stolen. If that’s true, Sony will be in a world of hurt with the authorities for their lax security.
