Get your adventures on the cheap

The Bundle in a box promotion is still going, but only for the next 4 hours. It’s a collection of point and click adventures and can be bought for the tiny sum of $0.99!

I already had “Ben There, Dan That!” and “Time Gentlemen, Please!” and enjoyed them. I’m hopeless at adventure game puzzles though so I must go look for a walkthrough. I love the stories however. I remember long ago reading through the adventure sections of Your Sinclair. The games mentioned were always just a little oddball, a little out of the ordinary and usually weren’t sold in shops but by mail order. Buying from Indie developers is a lot easier these days.

Thanks Gnome for helping to organise the bundle. Adventures are a niche though but if this is your first exposure to them this is a great way to start. So go on, drop them a Dollar and get some great games!

Recurring Nightmares

I’d forgotten how good Batman: Arkham Asylum was but now I’m playing it again having picked it up on release 2 years ago. The Scarecrow character in the comics had some great stories and the recurring nightmares in this game are terrifying the first time you come across them!

(Spoiler alert! Don’t watch or you’ll ruin a great section of the game!)

I still remember the first time I entered that morgue, gave me the shivers. Watch the video fullscreen, headphones on and in a dark room!

Robot Enrichment

I just noticed that Portal 2 now has a store where you can modify your robot. I like the way Valve monetize their games. They bring out free DLC, expanding older games with updates and offering them either free (TF2) or at a steep discount. Then they encourage you to buy hats and personalise your character! Nothing like some of the other grind to play free games I’ve played elsewhere.

Two games spring to mind, both free Android games. Samurai vs Zombies and Garfield Defense. Both play in exactly the same way even though they are apparently by different developers. I swear they used the one game engine and just swapped out graphics and sound.

In both games you collect coins to purchase power ups but those purchases are fairly pricey and by the time you get to level 10 you’ll need to grind and play the level 4 or 5 times to get enough coins to buy an upgrade to finish the level.

Still, not a bad way to spend a few minutes while waiting for the bus or something but to be honest I’d rather use my phone to read a book!

I almost forgot to mention the iOS version of Plants vs Zombies. It received a few updates recently which added the ability to plant flowers that reward you with silver and gold. I only tried it briefly but soon discovered that you need to use fertilizer or the plants will wilt. Of course you have to use real money to buy the fertilizer. *sigh*

Console BF3, now with servers to rent!

Yay, they bring the one thing I didn’t like about playing PC Battlefield games to the consoles. I could not care less about what server I play. I just want to squad up with my friends and play a game.

Now, let me play with a keyboard and mouse and I’ll be happy. I’ve had enough of using a crappy controller. Ironically enough, in the PC world apparently most servers have hackers so all platforms have their downsides.

Back to Skyrim then. As I said on Twitter earlier, I feel like a tourist in that game finding new stuff all the time as I wander about.

Reddit PvE Rev 6 Minecraft Server

One of the great things about Minecraft is that you can pack a level into one nice compressed archive. r/Minecraft on Reddit have a number of servers (I think) and this is one of them. You can download that world from here, it’s pveRev6.tar.gz but there are lots of other worlds there to check out too.

I had to fiddle around a bit to get creative mode working. I think I copied the region folder from the tarball into a creative world I created for this purpose. There was probably one or two other steps too but it’s been a while. Figuring out stuff in Minecraft is half the fun isn’t it anyway so go find out yourself 🙂
