The JXD A1000 Arrived!

Tweets have been flying around all day as people get their shiny new iPads but the postman delivered something I was looking forward to for a few weeks.

Yes, the JXD A1000 arrived this afternoon. I tried a few games and videos on it and it works quite well! The bundled 720p trailers were a bit jumpy but lower resolution DVD rips were fine.

The GBA games I tried, F-Zero and Rayman Origins (original carts in the attic) played perfectly and it’s a pleasure to play them on a decent screen! The original GBA screen is notoriously dark.

The screen is huge, the sound is loud, controls are great with even a small nipple joystick that works in GBA games.

Not many things to complain about except for the fiddly volume control and how to exit a game or save/load state (press the power button briefly to bring up a small menu).
The instruction manual is written in Chinese which is a bit of a pain too and it’s impossible to charge it from a USB port and play a game/video at the same time. I’m sure you can plug it into a wall socket and it’ll be fine though.

Battery will probably be a problem too as it’s built in. I’m sure I’ll end up taking the thing apart and searching for a replacement when it starts to wear down.

Also, the device includes a couple of games and pictures that I’m quite sure haven’t been licensed…

Still, a great way to play old GBA, NES and SNES in a handheld and cheap too. I was rudely reminded that games back then were a lot harder than games nowadays and my son briefly tried to touch the screen in attempt to use the GUI. No, this isn’t a touch screen device!
It’s on sale at Focalprice where I bought it. Shipping takes a while but it’s cheap and very cheerful.

Free Xbox Live Gold from Vodafone

If you have Ideal or Ultimate broadband with Vodafone Ireland and an Xbox 360 you can get a year of Xbox Live Gold membership for free.

Login to the Vodafone website, go to Living at Home and then add ons. You’ll find the form there offering free XBL Gold for a year! Handy as my Gold subscription ran out recently. (via boards.ie)

Departure from outward office of exchange

I’m playing the waiting game on an order from Chinese website focalprice.com. I suspect the package is coming via sail boat as it’s already been 3 weeks since my order was made and the China Mail website still has the same message:

Departure from outward office of exchange

When it works that is, most of the time it just says this:

?????????????? ??

Loosely translated as “Due to the use of too many users, again returned by the query”. Thanks Google.

I bought myself a JXD A1000 when it was on sale a few weeks back. It’s a handheld gaming machine that plays old games from the 90’s. Apparently it’ll play most GBA games which is great because the collection of carts for my original GBA is lying idle in the attic and I won’t feel too bad looking for replacement roms online ..

Killer Bean on Android

Remember Killer Bean? He now features in an 85 minute long film but I remember watching his hilarious and entertaining online shorts years ago so I was excited to see a Killer Bean game on Android. It’s free too!

I suspect it’s got in-app purchases and I’ve only played a few minutes of it. So far it’s a slick looking 2D platform shooter and controls aren’t too bad. (via)

Free audio books at podiobooks

Now this is interesting. podiobooks.com offer free author-read audio books. I haven’t listened to any yet but I like that the site indicated which are family friendly. You can of course give a donation to encourage the authors and keep the site running!

The interesting bit is that books are serialized as podcasts and they deliver them using a personalised feed.

Reykjavik Time Lapse

A short time lapse video I shot from the temporary Polldaddy HQ in Reykjavik, Iceland. I shot it with my Android phone over the course of about an hour. My battery hit 9% remaining charge by the end of it! I’ve never seen the weather change so fast or so often as it does here in Reykjavik.

Do not adjust your volume, there is no sound!

Krista posted a timelapse video from the same window!

Windows screenshots on a Macbook Pro laptop

Creating a screenshot in Windows is normally simple. Press Print Screen, fire up paint and paste it in. However what do you do when you have a laptop keyboard without a PRT SCN button?

It’s rather simple actually, thanks macrumors people.

To create a screenshot on a Macbook Pro laptop press either fn+shift+F11 or fn+ALT+F11. The latter one grabs a single window. Fire up paint and CTRL-v those pixels in!

Gaming podcasts

I like listening to podcasts when I’m out walking. Gamers With Jobs is a particularly good gaming podcast that I found via the Brainy Gamer blog. There’s also The Gamer’s Craic which hasn’t been updated in over half a year but remains one of the best gaming podcasts ever (but I may be biased).

I’ve already mentioned Futureshock and I’m a big fan of Science Friday. Any other podcasts I should listen out for?
