Following on from the time travelling theme in my Back to the Future post comes this documentary about the Irish Mail route from London to Dublin that operated from 1848. The documentary was originally broadcast in 1954. It has this lovely old fashioned feel to it.
It’s amazing that it took up to 2 days to travel between those cities but that was quick before regular flights were a reality.
Also be sure to read about the Chester and Holyhead Railway and this page about tunnel crossings across the Irish Sea. Who knew Irish trains didn’t use standard guage tracks eh? Whose bright idea was that then?
I’ve just listened to an excellent documentary about Lanier Phillips, the US Navy’s first black sonar technician. You should listen to it too.
Here’s a 39 minute podcast about Witchcraft (mp3) from the RTÉ Documentary on One series. It was first broadcast in 1976. The first half of the documentary is enlightening, explaining what and how witches worship, but the discussion on black magic is disturbing. The guy who was confident he had killed people with magic was really creepy.
The comments from the Catholic priest at the end are comical, saying witchcraft is incompatible with “true religion” as they don’t worship “all mighty god”. Ah yes. I bet she would have something to say about that! 😉
Justin linked to The Power of Nightmares and I’m watching it now. Excellent and thought provoking look at the US neo-conservatives and al-Qaeda. Frightening too.
Pity some people think it’s all so simple. At least others are concerned for the safety of Margaret Hassan. God Help Her.
Later… As Keith removed my comment from his post, here’s what I’d like him to know..
Damn, but you’re one sick individual.
Much much later.. You can watch all three episodes online now. According to Metafilter they’re on Google Video and archive.org! Thanks Damien.
