The new Canon: Canon 5D

Luminous Landscape published their impressions of the new Canon 5D which was announced a few days ago. Ken Rockwell has compared the spec list to that of the Canon 20D with some surprises!
Bob Atkins compares the 20D and 5D too. Some of the features of the 20D that are missing in the 5D ares ones I use – notably the built in flash and spot meter. Sometimes it’s just too much bother getting the 580ex out of the bag, and the on-board flash is sufficient!

Canon IS Lenses – worth it?

Bob Atkins discusses Canon IS Lenses in this article. He asks is it worth the extra cost?
He also asks if it beats an L series lens which is all academic to me as I’m not going to be spending that much money on a single lens any time soon!
Lovely example shots showing the strengths of both types of lens.
I’m waiting on my Sigma 18-200, el cheapo, but “it’ll do the job” I hope!

What's this WordPress.com thing anyway?

Lots of people are asking about WordPress.com, fortunately for them there has been lots said about it already, both on the wp-hackers list, and on the WPMU blog. Usually without much feedback which I have found strange, but there you go!
The question comes up on IRC frequently, and here’s what I said a short while ago:

<donncha> it’s just WordPress.. if you already run a WordPress blog then you know a lot about what WordPress.com will be 🙂

It’s that, but also more. WordPress.com is going to be a great site and a shining example of what can be built on GPL software!

How to convert from WMA to MP3

Converting Windows Media Audio files into MP3 format is rather easy with mplayer and lame. My car stereo plays MP3s, so WMA is of no use to me!
This code is based on this script but I have to wonder why they overwrote the wma file?
Piping the output of mplayer into lame is left as an easy lesson for the reader!
for i in *.wma ; do mplayer -vo null -vc dummy -af resample=44100 -ao pcm -waveheader "$i" && lame -m j -h --vbr-new -b 160 audiodump.wav -o "`basename "$i" .wma`.mp3"; done; rm -f audiodump.wav

Cobh Peoples Regatta, 2005: part 2

Following on from the fireworks in Cobh and my look around the Jeanie Johnston, here’s some photos of the late-night concert that took place in Cobh town center.
The crowd went a little mad dancing and singing along to this crazy looking band! Anyone know who they are? More photos after the jump..
