Éole’s photo reminded me of what Zig and Zag used to ask: Oú est la centre de George Pompideu?
It’s strange that there’s so little online about it!
Thankfully their other quotes are still making the rounds!

That Hunkey Dorey Advert?
Ray D’Arcy and co are talking about the Hunkey Dorey advert that displays 3 ladies and asks, “Who would you throw out of bed for eating Hunkey Dorey crisps in bed?”
Has anyone seen it around Cork? For purely research purposes of course, I’d like to see the advert that would keep a line of drivers amused while the traffic lights changed to green and back to red while they stared at it!
make IT secure
If you use Windows you have to contend with viruses and trojans all over the Internet. Linux and Mac owners are a little luckier being that Linux is getting more secure by default, and both are niche operating systems.
makeITsecure is an Irish Government website set up to encourage Irish Internet users to protect their PCs. It’s a laudable effort, but sorely lacking as it doesn’t link to any of the free anti-virus or anti-adware products available! What about Ad-Aware, AVG Anti Virus or the very accessible Trend Mico Housecall that will scan your PC without installing anything?
Oh yes, makeITsecure.ie is sponsored by Microsoft and Symantec among others. At least the Microsoft AntiSpyware package is free. Let’s hope you have a genuine install of Windows eh?
Photoblogger/Flickr Meetup at Clarion Hotel Tomorrow!
If you have a camera, run a photoblog or you’re in town, there will be a meet up tomorrow in Cork!
Everyone will gather in front of the Clarion Hotel at 2pm tomorrow where we’ll plan our photographic assault on the city!
It’s also the Jazz Weekend here in Cork so there’ll be plenty of interesting subjects to shoot!
For more info, and a map, look at this Upcoming.org page, or Ryan’s Blog!
See you there!
Bring Back Bosco!
If you’re not Irish you probably don’t know about Bosco, but if you grew up in the 80’s he’ll be instantly familiar. The Bosco Files has been around for a while but now, here’s a petition to bring back Bosco!
Maybe now they can answer why bosco has red cheeks, and will Frank be back to do a comedy intro?

Later.. The Bosco DVD is out! As is the Wanderly Wagon one! Here’s a picture of them in HMV, Cork a week ago. Did I buy? Err, no.

The Lobby Bar lives on … elsewhere
Donal posted that the The Lobby Bar will host a series of music events at the Half Moon Theatre. Looks like a couple of good gigs too!
I took an amazing photo of their front door 2 weeks ago. No it’s not amazing, it’s only a front door. *shrug*
Us.. more images
Ray D’Arcy announced earlier that the closing date for digital photos by email is now Wednesday night, not next weekend as previously reported. Good thing I had most of these finished last night!
Now it’s up to the judges.

Sunday Times: All About Pensions
The Sunday Times last week published several articles on pensions. There’s some good advice lurking there so go read them if you’re planning on living until after retirement!
- Comment: Kathryn Cooper: The grim truth about pension performance UK orientated, but reveals among other things that some institutions may add funds to their portfolios simply to increase charges.
- Choose the pension that fits – if you’re self-employed, starting a pension now before the October deadline can reduce your tax bill for last year as well as this year!
- The pension planner’s pension plan – what would the expert do?
- Can I save enough to retire on two-thirds of my salary? – Gulp! At age 36 he would have to save 18% of his current salary!
Us Day
October 1st is here and Ray and co were on the radio this morning encouraging everyone to get out there and take some photos! They were originally meant to broadcast from 11 to 1, but they locked themselves in the studio until 2pm! The discussion did degenerate into talking about handbags but it was great anyway!
I bumped into Ryan but he went his own way after half an hour. To be honest, it wasn’t a great day for me – frequent showers meant I had to wear a jacket, but between showers it was reasonably warm. Add that to a late night last night and I was struggling to keep my interest going. I have a few good shots which I will submit to Today FM, and eventually they’ll appear here too, but as Ryan said, there wasn’t much happening in the city.
It’s looking like a nice evening so I may take a walk about later around Blarney, you never know what might happen!
Edit: There’s a possible 51 shots from my walk around town that I’ll edit and submit. I have to work on them properly, but Bibblelite does a great job batch converting RAW files to Jpeg, and getting the colour balance right. Dcraw and UFraw both have problems with auto-wb on the Canon 20D in my experience.
Later still… I realised today (Sunday), that ufraw doesn’t keep the exif data when I import RAW files into the GIMP. If they check that for date and time info they might presume I was cheating and posting older images. I could tell them, “RAW images on request” I suppose.
