I read in the paper yesterday that a serious powercut hit Italy the day before. Granted, it was on Sunday that the powercut happened but I was shocked that such a major event escaped under my radar until Monday evening. UserFriendly is the first mention I’ve seen of it online, but now that I’m looking for it, I found it on rte.ie too.
There’s an expression here, “Ireland is closer to Boston than Berlin”. The reference is to economic policy but holds too for English speaking media which is sad.

Got skis?
Another amazing photo on photosig. This one of a water skier!
Layout-o-matic – css generator
Nice tool for generating the base code for a table free layout. Yumm!
gaim for some yahoo?
Argh! Silly play on words in the title, sorry! hehe.
The new version of gaim, available through apt-rpm and other sources logs in to Yahoo. The gaim website says there may trouble ahead but it works right now at least.
How to increase your hits
So anyways, the moral of this story is if you want to get hits, pick a fight with someone and mention Macs a lot. 🙂
Matrix Revolutions Trailer
Just watched the trailer for the latest Matrix movie and I’m impressed! Then again, I was probably impressed by the previous trailer, but the film was a disappointment. I still can’t wait for November though! Go download the trailer now! (Warning! 48MB file!)
I just noticed – The Matrix must be partly set in Chicago – the subway train had the word “LOOP” on it! *grin*
Blackpool Factories In Ruin
I went up to Blackpool on Saturday afternoon to photograph the textile factory and Sunbeam. Even 24 hours later smoke still rose from the fire-gutted buildings and rubble. The Evening Echo had a stark picture of the blazing building on it’s Friday edition. It’s lucky nobody was injured in the blaze. A creche on the site narrowly escaped damage but thankfully half the 160 kids who are usually in the creche were in care that morning.

This is all that stands where a large textile factory burned down on Friday morning. According to the news, the rest of the building was demolished at noon on Saturday.
Rubble and Debris. Over 130 jobs are gone as the textile factory isn’t opening again.
Detail of the destruction of the out-buildings behind the main factory.
All that remains today of an old Cork landmark.
Modem upgrade
For ages I’ve had to use an internal winmodem (using the closed-source hcf drivers available online), but Owen gave me a USR external modem yesterday which I just replaced my old modem with. On booting Linux, Kudzu recognised that the internal modem was removed and configured the new external modem!
The only problem I had with kppp was a “NO DIALTONE” error in the log. Doh! I forgot to plug in the telephone cable!
The external modem is faster, apt-get runs at 5.9kb/sec instead of 4.4kb/sec, and there’s no annoying stutter when the modem dials.
Thanks Owen 🙂
Headlines from 2011
These headlines from the future make for good reading. hehe.
President Howard Dean vowed to continue pursuing the missing terrorists, but Richard Perl, Donald Rumsfeld et al. are still at large, being hidden by members of anti-Government militias in remote regions of the mountain states. The cabal took flight following the shocking 2009 discovery that “George W. Bush” was a humanoid robot loosely modeled on a combination of George H. W. Bush and former Indiana Senator Dan Quayle….
The latest works – optical illusions
Don’t look at this page if you tend to get migrane as some of the images here will probably set off a major headache if you look at them too long! These optical illusions look great, and I wonder why all those demo coders spent so long doing mandelbrots and full-screen anims. They could have simply used an optical illusion and let the viewers eyes do the work!
