Under Pressure Studio Take

A version of Queen and David Bowie’s Under Pressure you might not have heard before.

You can hear some talking in the background. From the title I thought this was made during the recording of the song but comments on this video and another video say it’s from radio interviews. Anyone know?

Here’s a great article on the making of the song.

Though the band sounds lighthearted enough in the studio sessions, the songwriting, May remembers, was fraught with tension. “It was very hard,” he said in 2008, “because you already had four precocious boys and David, who was precocious enough for all of us.” Bowie, says May, “took over the song lyrically” and insisted on presiding over the final mix session, which “didn’t go well,” according to Queen engineer Reinhold Mack. For his part, May has said he would “love to sit down quietly on my own and re-mix it.”

Somebody to Love

As a joke a few days ago I shared an awful cover of a Queen song on Facebook, so in apology I give you Marc Martel singing the beautiful Queen song, “Somebody to Love”.

And as a bonus here’s an amazing rendition of Nessun Dorma. Wow, just wow.

All this found at the same time I find out that Freddie Mercury’s mother, Jer Bulsara has died at the age of 94. RIP.

Eric Kim’s Critique by Constantine Manos at Magnum Workshop

It can be hard to hear criticism of your work but I liked this critique of Eric Kim’s work by Constantine Manos at a Magnum workshop. It was constructive and helpful. If I took anything from it, it would be “take photos that look hard to take”. That’s difficult to do in street photography but I sometimes manage it.
I was going to say I manage it through pure luck or accident but when I’m out with my camera I’ll always be looking for the next shot. So, I’m prepared for that lucky break. On the street anything can happen.

I found the video above on this thread about street photography. Lots of good advice and discussion there too.

Megablast Banjo Remix

Here’s rather impressive remix of the Xenon 2 Megablast main title tune created by a talented banjo player!

Long time readers may remember I used the original music in a video for a short but fun game of Bad Company 2. We joined a game with nobody on the other side so we had fun with the crates, grenades, bullets and smoke. Looking at the date on the video I can’t believe that was almost six years ago!

How to turn off annotations in Youtube Videos

Youtube annotations are those sometimes useful but more likely annoying messages that appear over videos on that site. You’ve probably seen them when a video asks you to “Like and Subscribe!” or “Visit here for my merchandise”. They can be annoying.

The good news is you can disable annotations each time by clicking on the video settings through the cog symbol, but there is an easy way to disable them permanently.

Go to https://www.youtube.com/account_playback where you’ll see this page:

Simply click on Show annotations and in-video notifications to unset it and save your settings. Annotations be gone!
