Holding Your Breath?

Who else stayed up late watching the US election commentary and watched the non news unravel?
As time passes it looks more likely that Bush will win again and that has serious implications for the left, or perhaps for American society as a whole. Who likes Kerry anyway?
At least we can probably look forward to seeing ol’ Bill in the Whitehouse again. Cigar wielding interms beware.
What if Bush Wins?

On another matter, no doubt, the plight of Margaret Hassan has been largely forgotten now as well. I heard her sister speak and plead with her kidnappers, and it’s heart wrenching.
Later Kerry concedes defeat (5 minutes ago!). Well George, you’ve got a tough job ahead of you – a huge defecit, looming recession, and war in Iraq. Good Luck.

Kerry ended his quest, concluding one of the most expensive and bitterly contested races on record, with a call to the president shortly after 11 a.m. EST, according to two officials familiar with the conversation.

And, as we approach the election hour, here’s Bush showing his true colours, giving Just a one-fingered victory salute to you and the world!

Dealing with Mobiles

It’s in the humour category, but this thread is actually quite serious. Motorists talking on their phone are a serious threat to everyone around them.

If I find a driver using his phone at the head of the queue waiting at the lights, I position my bike in front of their car and wait for the lights to go green. When the inevitable blasts on the horn start up after the lights phase, I get off my bike, lay it on the ground and walk over to ask the driver to hang up his call. Can also be combined with method one, above.

If the driver ignores me (as is often the case) then I simply lift up the wiper blades on his windscreen, forcing him to pull over and get out to put them down again. It’s simple, not dangerous and doesn’t damage property in any way. For some reason, though – it really annoys them!

Ken Bigley Executed

Despite all that his family did to publicize his plight, how others others protested and tried to get help for him, and the fact that the Irish Government issued him with an Irish passport, Ken Bigley was executed yesterday afternoon.
The same on Aljazeera.com.

Commenting on the new report, Paul Bigley said: “I have heard nothing at all.

“I have been optimistic and remain optimistic.”

Paul said he was praying the news turn out to be untrue.

Cartoonizing Photos With The GIMP

This is fun! After reading this tutorial on making cartoons from photos I tried to emulate his technique in the GIMP. The dialogs are slightly different but here’s what I did..

  • Layer->Duplicate Layer
  • Select the new layer, Filters->Edge-Detect->Edge, select Sobel, Amount should be 2.0, and Black should be checked.
  • Invert the edge-mask layer, it’s in Layers->Colors->Invert
  • Back in the Layers Dialog, change the Layer Mode to Divide

Play around with Layer mode settings, desaturate the top layer, blur or otherwise mess up the bottom layer. Endless fun can be had! Feel free to post links to your own creations in the comments below!

Later.. on advice I got rid of the portrait, I’ll upload another tomorrow!

the stypod on Queen – Dancer

I’m a huge Queen fan, one look at my CD collection and that’ll become clear. Unfortunately, there are two of their albums I really don’t like. Those are “Hot Space” and “Jazz”. They sound very 80’s-ish, and not in a good way. I think they haven’t dated very well.
Anyhow, the stypod has a feature on Dancer, one of the songs from Hot Space. Besides “Under Pressure” it probably is one of the stronger musical pieces on the album.
/me goes back to Queen at the Beeb.. ah yes!
