Seems that some members of STF are having problems with their new F828 cameras. 🙁 It appears that not everyone is having those problems, but the camera firmware is user upgradeable so that may fix the problems!

Today's Bike Run
I was in town this afternoon shopping and as I queued at the ATM in Paul St. I heard an almighty roar from Patrick St. As soon as I got my money I rushed down to be confronted with a large group of bikes making their way down the main thoroughfare of the city!

As a side-note, this is the first time I tried the “shoot and pan” trick with my camera. I set the exposure time to 1/30 second and as the bikes went past I panned the camera as I took the shot. Most of the time it didn’t work too well, but the picture of Santa above came out well IMO!
Bird Photography
Despite what #linux thought this discussion was about, it’s actually about photographing hawks, owls, ospreys and other wild fowl. Here’s a tip I must try out, whenever it gets bright again in these parts..
…When shooting against a bright sky, compensate by 1.3 to 1.7EV….
I think that’s up the EV, but another post suggests turning it down by that amount. Who’s right?
photoSIG Photos
2 amazing photos on Photosig this morning:
- football fan2 – this is such a powerful image it jumped out at me from the page.
- The Weather Project – excellently composed photo. The running child captured within the reflection of the sun makes this a lot more interesting as her action contrasts with the idle non-motion of the adults at the far end of the photo.
Magnetospheric Magnificence
Amazing panoramic photo of the aurora!
Pull the string!
Why didn’t it occur to me to pull the string of the lens cap so it wouldn’t dangle down and knock against my camera?
Bars in Cobh – Spike Island
I was down in Cobh with my brother the other night and while he talked to a friend I setup the tripod to take a few shots. In the distance you can see Spike Island, home to one of the prisons that will be soon shut. I thought the foreground bars provided a nice frame for such an institution.

Portraits
Some excellent portraits posted on STF today! The author gave them as an example of DOF, but I think he was looking at the wrong parts of these strong photos!
Digital Photography and the GIMP
Here’s a good course for schools to teach digital photography skills using the GIMP! It is of course useful even if you are past that particular part of your life too!
iPod as Digital Photography Storage
Here’s an interesting review of a Belkin Media Reader that will plug into an iPod. (Thanks Mark for the link!) Great idea for a music player to do, and it looks like it’s been done well.
The lengthy time required to copy files over is worrying, as I shoot 5MP images to 256MB memory stick. Going by the time quoted in the article it would take 15 minutes to copy over one memory stick (and yes, I can easily fill that much space taking pictures of even one scene!)
There are other options out there, and many have been reviewed on dpreview and other photography sites. Here’s an overview of some of those options.
Maybe I’ll invest in the next year or so. The deposit on my house purchase was paid last Monday so I’m slightly cash strapped right now!
Oh yeah – great photo of a kite surfer on photosig!
