PS3 Break

If you haven’t upgraded your PS3 you can probably hack it and PS3 Break is what you need.

Thankfully, if you want to play online you have to update the firmware and this hack is useless to you. Stopped cheaters in their tracks.

Yes, yes, I know it can be used for homebrew and I’m all for that, but 99% of the time it’ll be used to run pirated software. Lots of great comments on the subject here.

The PS3 is broken, long live the PS3

You may have read that a USB dongle went on sale that basically put Playstation 3s into debug mode, thus allowing you to do things not normally allowed. Well, Sony sued and stopped them selling it, but of course the software on the dongle has been reverse engineered and made available online.

Where is the code? Well, slashdot linked to it. It’s on github and there’s a slight mod required to play “backups” of games. On a brighter note, any potential pirates will need a compiler to use the code but I guess it’s only a matter of time before a USB iso becomes available.

I hope Sony figure out a way to stop this working. It’s bad news for software publishers if users can copy their games by just plugging a USB dongle into their machine.

Jelly pirates walk the plank

I can’t remember how I found this twitter account but Jelly SMS runs a jellysmspirates account listing people who are using a hacked copy of their software.

A real time feed of people who are using a hacked copy of Jelly SMS for iPhone or iPod Touch

If you use a hacked copy of their software you better watch out. Your info might be listed on that Twitter account!

The important question for developers is, “Does it work?” Apparently it does. The developer has even seen increased sales and says, “For me, piracy seems to be a good thing!”

I wonder if any other online services do the same?
