This thread on dpchallenge says that, “istock / shutterstock are ruining the industry”.
SharQ recommends Alamy, Corbis and other sites that sell photos on a royalty basis. istock/shutterstock sell royalty free photos so photographers could be “underselling” their photos. It’s an interesting thread and worth a read.
According to their FAQ, Alamy require 48MB tiffs (24MB for “reportage material”) which my camera might have a little trouble creating. By upscaling a 2048×1920 photo to 3584×2688 the resulting uncompressed tiff file is 28MB. *ouch* It might be a while before I submit stuff to them!
Meanwhile, in the world of the amateur photographer I’ll continue to use the “royalty free” sites such as istockphoto and shutterstock.
Here’s a thread about how well some users of those sites are getting on. Note to self, upload more photos!

Crash in Tower
Spotted on the way to work. The wreck was gone by the time I passed by on the way home yesterday evening. It’s a long straight road at that point..
Squiggly Trees
What does one do on a freezing cold night? Go out with a tripod and take photos of trees!
I took this photo a week ago during a cold snap in the weather. I assembled my tripod on the corner of the street near my home and set it up for a 20 second exposure. Half way through the shot a man, his son and their dog passed. I *knew* something was going to happen and I was right. The dog’s lead got caught in the legs of the tripod but I had a good grip of it so the camera didn’t go flying out onto the road!
There was some movement and those squiggles across the picture are the result. I like it! 🙂
Local History, Global Reach
Iniscarra Cemetery, just a few miles from where I work, holds the remains of one "Mary William, daughter of John Stewart of Belfast. Wife of the very reverend Theophilius Blakely, Dean of Down". She’s also the mother of Captain Theophilus Alexander Blakely, a prolific designer of rifled cannon and the inscription on the side of his mother’s tomb bears witness to that:
Mother of Captain Blakely Royal Artillery. Original inventor of improvements in cannon and the greatest artillerist of the age.
A quick search proved useful and it was sobering to find a connection between my locality and the American Civil War!
IR In the Park
Inspired by the psuedo-IR tutorials I linked to yesterday I walked down by the Regional Park and took the following shots. Lots of post-processing in the GIMP, and none were handled the same. It’s amazing what can be squeezed out of night-shot mode of a Sony digital camera!
Sandbags Everywhere
They’re all over the place but didn’t stop major damage to many shops and premises in the city center. I guess the road works didn’t make things any better for retailers or shoppers alike. Hopefully we won’t see floods as bad as that again this year. Did anyone see Clonmel on the news? Yikes! I had parked in places that were about 3 or 4 feet deep in water!
Lee Fields: Flooded
As usual, the Lee Fields flooded so I went out for a scout around. My shoes are sopping but I got a few good shots! At least others had fun in the water!
Swans in Ballydehob

Awwww! Such beautiful creatures! Majestic, rulers of their domain, proud! |
Oh My God! He’s getting close! Must zoom out! |
Aarrrggghhh! Jump back! Bloody thick headed bird went for me! |
Cork Ladies Mini Marathon 2004 Pictures
Oh wow! What a great day! The organisers say there was well over 7,000 entrants this year, 1,000 over last year’s race! Bishop Buckley was in attendance, as were lots of charities and societies.
Well done Louise on doing the race too!
A great day was had by all and I’ll be back next year to cover it again!

The Willful
The Willful played in the Coal Quay Bar last night and went down a storm! Great night, especially as I hadn’t been to that pub in months!
