Mark lists several online photographic magazines that updated in the last couple of days. There’s some excellent content here. Well worth looking over!

When you get new memory cards..
When you get new memory cards for your camera make sure you format them first. I took about 20 photos at lunchtime and one or two were good enought to go up here, but Linux refuses to see the card, saying,
# mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera
/dev/sda1: Input/output error
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
Time to format the card..
Update! I’m glad I went searching first. The Digital Camera Support for UNIX page is a comprehensive listing of digital cameras that are compatible with Linux and BSD. It lists the Sony DSC-F717 there and says you can use the usb-storage device, or PTP mode to access it. You can use gphoto in PTP mode and download photos using a nice GUI!
EV Compensation
The 717 has a histogram showing the composition of the image seen through the linse. I know what it represents, but wasn’t sure how to manipulate it or use the information it presented to me. This tutorial on EV Compensation certainly helps and provides example shots to illustrate!

Sammy Sosa, Baseball & corked bats
At the start of June Sammy Sosa, Chicago Cubs’ star player broke his bat during a game. Cork was discovered inside the bat, lending him an unfair advantage while hitting. I was there with Martina, and although I didn’t realise the full extent and implications of what was happening, I snapped a few photos. It made headline news for about 2 weeks afterwards! You can find more about this via Google.
Referees and inspectors walk off the field. You can clearly see the bat Sammy used, and there’s a slight shadow in the middle. Is that where the cork was?
The bat was inspected at the side of the field. Shortly after they walked off and the game continued.
But not before members of the Cubs and one of their officials had a good talk..
As the game restarted, the Cubs pitched..
Chicago Pictures
I went for a walk earlier today and promptly got lost as I tried to return to work. I walked down Wells St. to Congress, instead of walking one block the other direction to Washington.. *doh* On the way I took a few photos..
This is the Chicago Board of Trade and a very famous landmark in downtown Chicago. There’s a similar (but much better) night time view of this building hanging in the corridor at work in Cork. I’ll have to get a tripod and try and replicate the night image.
This is where I work, right at the top of the building, floor 38! How high is the County Hall at home?
Chicago people have been very helpful any time I needed help finding directions. Some go out of their way walking with you and explaining the names of the surrounding streets. I spotted this woman as she was talking to this tram driver and obviously lost as she was carrying balloons in the financial district.. 🙂

Sony DSC-F717 – tried it?
I spent an hour yesterday between Microcenter and Circuit City comparing prices of laptops and cameras. I came to the sorry conclusion that there’s not much to differenciate them. Best Buy is about the same price range. They’re still cheaper than Irish prices though! Especially in the digital camera market. I saw so many laptops and cameras yesterday my brain got a bit frazzled. I’ve decided to forego buying a laptop at this stage (as I might be able to get a loan of one..) and one camera that caught my eye is the Sony DSC-F717. Reviews are for the most part favourable even if the camera isn’t perfect. There was an auto-focus issue with earlier models that was almost 10 months ago. There’s some good prices to be found, but I’d like to hear if you’ve had experience with this camera. I’d also love to hear of sites offering accessories at more reasonable prices!
Update! Here’s an excellent review from photo.net
Miaow!
This is a demo of the customfield used to create a “photoblog” of sorts. In my “Picture” field I have the names of my 3 images, seperated by “;;;”. A Smarty foreach
loop then runs through the list of images. You can find more information in your “Custom Fields” administration page.
Morro Bay
Wow! This photo is beautiful!
As I drove through town last night there was an amazing sunset. The sky glowed orange/red against the striking cloudscape and reflected off the River Lee. Unfortunately I was driving so I couldn’t stop. I might get another chance tonight.
