A few days ago I reported on 2 car accidents in which 5 people lost their lives. Justin provided a comparision between Ireland and the USA WRT car accidents. Here in Ireland, it makes the news when someone dies on the roads, and that makes people more aware of the dangers of road travel. There are the same number of deaths in the US but apparently they’re not as widely reported. Why is that? Justin says it better so have a look at his blog!
The last week has been a bad time in Ireland because of some exceptionally heinous crimes. I was going to provide some commentry around these links but I find myself unable to do so. [1] [2 ] [3] [4]

Catch Novarg Worm with Procmail
The latest updated local-rules.procmail from John Hardin has a rule to catch the new NovArg worm. The worm is caught by his security script anyway, but this Procmail recipe identifies the worm.
Update! It seems that the worm uses files with the .zip extension to transmit itself. These aren’t mangled by default so it’s probably worth adding “.zip” to your mangle list for the next week or so. John has more to say..
Daw Books – Science Fiction stuff!
While in Chicago I continued my favourite past time of browsing in book shops. I don’t remember the shop itself but it was on the corner of State and Randolph I think where I purchased a DAW Books 30th Anniversary Science Fiction Collection. I’m half way through it now and it’s a great read, Tad Williams’ short story is crazy, following the take over of the Earth by an AI, Terminator or Lawnmower man style, but through IRC! heh. Another story uses IRC too as a means of communication between ships in space, and a whole story unwinds from the script of the chat-session. Great stuff.
Vodafone.ie doesn't like Mozilla Firebird
Argh! Vodafone.ie doesn’t like Mozilla Firebird! I tried to change my tariff from the awfully expensive one it was at. (set a year ago, and forgot to change, it’s not even available now!)
Using Moz FB I get the following error:
You have selected a Text Add On.
In order for your request to be processed you must select one of our new Tariff options from the Tariff Table.
Of course I had selected one of the new tariff options and I hadn’t selected the “Text Add On”. I had to resort to IE on a Windows box nearby. Why can’t they get simple forms and radio buttons right and cross-browser compatible? Silly, silly, silly.
Must mail webmasterATvodafone.ie about that one methinks.
Zac is missing!
Simple Tricks for More Usable Forms
Simon Sillison posted a great article on making forms more usable. I use a few of the techniques already but I didn’t know others. A comment left on his site indicates problems with browsers other than Mozilla, so maybe it’s about time you all upgrade! 😉
Guide the laser..
Guide the laser and light up the bulbs! This is a clone of an ancient c64 game I loved. As pron puts it, “like the c64 the playing was important, not the graphics.”
In other news, Ireland’s tech industry goes down the tubes with the proliferation of online Flash games. heh.
Cork Bloggers
Dave O’Neill is another blogger from Cork. I took a quick look at his geourl page and there’s loads of others around here too! 🙂
One of these days I’ll get around to setting up GeoURL on my blog.
Pics of the Day
Photosig has a couple of images that I liked this morning:
- Nightriding – I have to try something like this. It’s surreal. Liam created a nightime photo of his own. I took a few photos last night, and may post a few later!
- Trine – In this day and age of computer post processing this is a great example of what can be done, without a computer!
- Brothers – great portrait of 3 kids. Good DOF, and well composed!
I'm a rabbit!
As seen on Today FM this afternoon, it seems I was born in the year of the rabbit,
