Saw this on slashdot so probably everyone else has too.. Anyway, this comparison of the Linux 2.4 and 2.6 kernels is interesting, if only to show that serving web pages under Linux 2.6 “more effectively used system resources and served 5 times more Web pages than the 2.4.18 kernel did.” Boss, can we upgrade now?

Haunted Houses, Ghosts and Poltergeists
I need a spooky category.. Gerry Ryan has had a few calls from women saying their houses are haunted. I’ve an open mind about this and wouldn’t dismiss it out of hand at all.
The first caller said that she saw a silver haired woman lying on the bed next to her one morning, she turned away and back again and the woman was gone. She heard her child mumbling one night and went into her room later and the child said that she had been trying to call out and she was held down by something. Last Monday she took 3 photos of her children and apprently there’s an hump-backed old woman with a cane in the picture. A psychic told her that the woman in the house doesn’t want them living there! *gulp*
There’s more, and it’ll probably be repeated on Saturday morning so have a listen then!
More Photography Stuff
A Rebel in Paris and Backrounds are two articles I saw at the Photography Blog. They stand out because almost every other post on his blog is product announcements. Kinda pointless as I already have a camera I’m happy with (oh, and can’t afford to upgrade anyway!)
Obscure Firefox References and Features
Justin lists some of the features of the new Firefox browser that may appear in the future..
Stealth mode: using specially malformed headers, Firefox will load your web pages and web servers will be unable to log your vists.
My own favourite extension is the Digger extension. This allows you to dig down through a URL easily!
Vivid Light Photography #33
The latest issue of this online magazine is out now. Looks like a couple of interesting articles to look at this month.
Why C Is Not My Favourite Programming Language
I got about half way through this article before I realised I’m really not interested in it. If I was coding a demo or something that was performance critical then I’d use C/C++ possibly with a dash of ASM but otherwise, give me the garbage collecting, lots of data types, memory checking, higher level languages any day. 🙂
Chicago Air And Sea Show, 2003
Photos from the Chicago Air And Sea Show last August. It was an absolutely beautiful day but there was a lot of haze in the air making capturing clear images very difficult! I’ll add futher comments later but I’m tired and need to get to bed now!

Development stuff
Introduction to the Firebird Database – A brief introduction, but good reading if you haven’t used it (like me!)
Custom Underlines – oh cute! CSS underlining of links using graphics!

1200 houses burn in South Africa
Just heard a spokesman for the Nial Mellon Township Challenge speak on the radio. Some 1200 of the buildins in a township burnt down at the weekend, 5000 people are now homeless. Some of these buildings were constructed by Irish builders who volunteered their efforts last December for free! It’s a shame to see this happen but hopefully they can get this up and running again.
