Net in China domain spam

Early this morning I received the following email from Chinese domain registrar, “Net in China” regarding the camera club I’m a member of, Mallow Camera Club. It looks suspicious, but harmless. The worst they could do is tempt me to buy those domains through them, or could they have squatted on the domains and extracted a higher price?

Curious, I went searching, and found this post from a few days ago. It seems I’m not the only one receiving these emails. Either they’re trying to scam people, or business is going very well for Net in China!

I don’t have any interest in those domains, but I did finally register through Namecheap so some good came of this domain scam email!

  1. A number of our clients have received the same email. We’d always recommend that they register the “open” domains, such as com/net/org/info/biz/mobi and .eu, as it’s cheaper than getting into a dispute about the domains later

  2. Same here…add all the variants of the company , like Media, Holdings, Resources, Software, Computing, etc to a domain name as people try to hijack an identity which can be used against a trademark.

  3. Just got the exactly same message, relating to our site name (for hk cn tw ) : a cut and paste job
for the body of the text. Definitely trying to scare people into purchasing those domains. I guess
will delete the msg or where could i report them ?

  4. I too got the email, and responded initially, but looks like I don’t have to worried about anything…

    Dear principal,

Now Jinli Holdings Limited wanted to apply for other domain names and internet brand name you have not registered yet.Jinli Holdings Limited wants to apply the following domain names:
    1.Domain name
    2.Internet brand name

If you have no relationship with Jinli Holdings Limited, according to our working experience, there are 2 possibilities:
1.Jinli Holdings Limited is a domain names grabber.they want to register these names before you and sell back to you to gain profits.
2.your competitor let Jinli Holdings Limited to register your domain names, let your customers feel confusion.

We found they are not the real owner of this name when we were checking. So we sent email to inform your company to protect your interest. As a domain name registrar,we have no right to dispute their application. As the company whose trademarks relate to the applied domains, you own the preferential rights to register them.If you think these domain names are useful for you,we can help you register these domain names within dispute period. If you do not need, then we can register for Jinli Holdings Limited. You must know that any party have right to register any domain name in the world without authorized. This is international domain name registration principle. For example, had been registered by other company. And Goolge had paied 1 million dollars to get the two domain names back.We also don’t hope that there will be some infringement to the interests of your company in future.

There is a time limit.Pls let us know your decision soon.Waiting for your reply.

We received a formal application from a company who is called Jinli Holdings Limited are applying to register”zeto-clothing” as their domain name and Internet brand爊ame in Asia on燡un 18,2008.During our auditing procedure we find out that the alleged Jinli Limited has no trade mark, brand nor patent even similar to that word.
As authorized anti-cybersquatting organization we hereby suspect the alleged燡inli Holdings Limited爐o be a domain grabber.Hence we need you confirmation for two things.First of all, whether this alleged燡inli Holdings Limited爄s your business partner or distributor in Asia.Secondly, whether you are interested in registering these domains.(The alleged燡inli Holdings Limited爓ill be entitled to obtain a domain not needed by original trademark owner.)
If you are not in charge of this please transfer this email to appropriate dept. .This is a letter for confirmation. If the mentioned third party is your business partner or distributor in Asia,we will automatically confirm application from your business partner after this audit procedure.

  5. Domain name registration is not a difficult process. But I have seen that for new comers it is always some what tricky. But yes companies from around the world are using these sort of bad marketing techniques which you have illustrated here.

  6. I can’t imagine where new comers would get caught up at though, unless your talking about the nameservers and things like that. I’d hate to put the title “marketing” on what these guys are doing though.

  7. They are still active…

    Just got one today:

    Dear CEO/Manager,

We are a domain name registration center in HongKong, mainly dealing with domain name registration and internet intellectual property rights protection. On Aug 20, 2009 we received a formal application from a company who is applying to register several domains, using “asuta” as the internet keyword. After investigation, we find that you are the original user of the keyword. Such similar domain cases may involve your company name or trade mark, and may cause website confusion and conflicts. For a responsible attitude, we inform you here and your opinion, in order to deal with this issue better, please contact us by email or telephone ASAP.

    Looking forward to your reply.
