Some Thoughts:
- When you have a tooth ache everything else takes second place.
- Oh, and the tooth ache always happens on a bank holiday weekend, to ensure maximum pain, and remind you to go to the bloody dentist more often!
- Vodka, rubbed onto the infected gum/teeth is a god-send for pain relief. It lasts almost 3 hours and it’ll let you get some measure of rest at night.
- Have an understanding partner who’ll take care of you and fuss over you.
- Brush, floss and see your dentist more often.
- Brush, floss and see your dentist more often.
- Brush, floss and see your dentist more often.
- Brush, floss and see your dentist more often.
I’ll probably have to get a root-canal next week, the tooth is dead so hopefully it won’t be too sore. (I’m not too hopeful though..)

Oh and did I forget to mention 100 mgs of ultram along with that? I’m a nurse, so I know I am not ODing, but DAMN, you WOULD figure that it would stop by NOW. This is all in a 30 minute time frame, NOTHING has kicked in. I’ve had some pretty HORRID experiences with dentists, so I am NOT looking forward to going. *sigh*
i have took co-codamol with Oralgel is this ok ?

i can say honestly i think i have it worse then all of you i like to chew on caps of water bottles the plastic rings and such and one day i was doing this when it cracked my last tooth on the top i noticed it put a small hole toward the front of a big tooth at first it was fine and i thought it ok to pass on the dentist…………untill after a few mounths of fiddling with the tooth it started to get very very sore..food gets stuck very easily in the tooth because its a hole in a big tooth so getting food out was a task all its self..i found that messing with the tooth was worse then i could have dreamed i like to brace my tooth along side the side of my mouth and use air to get food otu and sometimes calm the pain this action now is unbearable i want nothing more then to get the tooth yanked i have no pain killers nothing and for people who think ice helps thats funny to me as ice is most painfull to the tooth of all i have no relif for atleast a week now this is truly the worst type of pain and toture i could of known…pray for me i have no insurance i have no idea whats goin on in my tooth my only hope is that getting it pulled is the end of this problem..
Dude i do NOT think you have it worse than anyone here. Get over yourself already~ The only difference between your ache and everyone else’s toothache is…….you brought yours on yourself. So the only difference between you and us is your an idiot that self inflicted this on yourself. How dare you compare yourself to others and how dare you say your ache is worse than others. like i said….get over yourself. and again i will reiterate the only thing different is your an idiot! A tooth ache is just that……..a tooth ache an they all hurt like a mother fucker. the sympathy factor is another diffeerence……everyone here gets sympathy but you….. if you dont know by now the only thing meant for teeth to chew on is food then your dumber than you made yourself sound. Idiot……
Wow..
I really don’t know what to say. I had to reread what you wrote about being worse off then us a few times..
I was on here a few months back with extreme tooth pain. I had slept maybe 3 hrs in 5 days and one day when I finally fell asleep from pure exhaustion I woke up to swelling beyone belief and my face so red that it looked like someone slapped me good. Wicked infection.
Even then, I not once thought or came here to claim I was worse off then anyone else here..
If you want some empathy or suggestions, then we were here for you, but not if you do that.
Kelly i know this jerk and his type. he is a kind of person that always makes his lil aches and pains sound worse then they are and then goes looking for attention just so he can compare his pain to others. he is a child and could be in a grown persons body but mentally he is a child and has no empathy for anyone. his parents more than likely over indulged him in many things in life including things like this.. and now momma is not around and he has to come here to have that “Comfort” and the comfort he gets is thinking he is worse off than anyone something i am sure he and his momma instilled into his mind when he was a kid. I can bet ya he is not liked very much as an adult and i bet when he was a kid no kids liked him cuz he was a mommas baby…..things havent changed…….he is a jerk..plain and simple…..jerk
Anyone heard from Mark and Carlo? Are they ok? Incidentally I prayed for the one who thought his pain greater than ours, but pain is pain, nothing’s different and we ALL hurt badly. With that said I hope everyone feels better… I do.. I took a gruesome round of antibiotics and am putting off the dentist for a while, I know a stupid thing but I am so afraid of the dentist it hurts… the only thing they give me is dry socket and a deathwish… tho the toothache is the same. *sigh* fear sucks, ay? Hope all of you feel better and best wishes to the lot of you!!!
*hugs*

It was a Carlo claiming to have it worse than anyone else…….maybe they sent a dentist to his place since he is special ….special ed maybe but not special
Arianna,
Not sure where you’re at but going to the dentist is not at all like it used to be at least not in the United States. Putting off going in lieu of antibiotics, is a bad idea as antibiotics not taken responsibly, can have negative and long lasting effects on one’s body by stripping away much needed antibodys which a healthy body produces on it’s own. The long lasting effect of this depletion of antibodys, is to render our immune system defenseless against certain viruses and infections which we would normally be able to fight off without antibiotics, which in the end, makes us much more susceptible to illness and disease.
Going to the dentist is no longer the painful and anxiety ridden experience that it once was because there are so many new techniques now days to prevent pain and discomfort that no one should be afraid of a trip to the dentist’s office ever again. I’m not a doctor but my wife is so that is where my information comes from.
God bless

I have HIGH anxiety when it comes to the dentist. I actually panic, and get meanly aggressive where I swear if someone was coming in the door there and I wanted out, I would take them down!
I finally found a dentist that gives me a bunch of pills. I take 3 or 4 of them,..sit in the waiting room for 10 mins..then they ask if i want to sit in the chair..by then im high and i do it. I sit down, they hook up my heart monitor and all that jazz and im OUT!
However, my husband stays with me the entire time, and I seem to say crazy stuff when I come to..I don’t remember any of it.
Like in june when I had 2 teeth removed I woke up to the doctor wiping my mouth off, and I mumbled and moaned saying that I thought he was kissing me and that I had liked it…Not like me at all, very odd lol

Hi Kelly,
When i was about 9 or 10 maybe even younger, anyways I had to have retainers back then and I used to see this one dentist all the time.. I had seen only one other dentist my entire life and so i was ussed to this guy. He was an older guy, well shit to me he was older now i am 43 and i guess he was about 50ish maybe 60ish hell he could have even been in his 40s for all i know….you know how it is when your that young anyone over 16 looks old…..lol Anywyas his house burned down and he had to take off work for about a week and I had to go to him once a week for an adjustment on my retainers. He had a younger guy sit in for him while he was gone…Of course I didnt know this guy and for my regular doc i was a great patient even at that age.. For my regular guy i would literally look foward to going to the dentist he was fun after all. He like to joke around and he gave me the good ole laughing gas when i got nervous of multiple needles, which i took needles pretty good until i was stressed and being that young its understandable. So this new guy came in for him and I being a kid was scared of him cried a bit not understanding where my regular doc was. Well i guess for this prick i cried a bit to much after all he was coming at my mouth for the 10th time with a needle. Remind you i normally didnt cry this time i did…..this guy was being a prick to start off, he was not kind at all. even the dental asst didnt like him, i could tell….so i cried after the 10th shot and this mother fucker literally grabbed my face and slapped me as hard as he could…it left a huge red mark on my face and dont you know i jumped out of that chair and ran to my mom in the waiting room….boy she hit the fucking roof and called the copas and he was arrested on the spot. needless to say he was fired and the regular doc had to stop what he was doing..dealing with his house being burned down and come in to finish me up…he had to finish because i was in the middle of work. I cant ever remember what happened after that i do know he lost his liscn to pratice and served some time in jail…i found that out years later. I totally lost all memory of ever going again after that. I never wanted to go again i can tell you that.
Like i siad i am 43 now and going to the dentist is not a thing i love to do by any means. One would think i have a big fear of going to the dentist now.. But like i said i am 43 and now i hit back. I do how ever sit in with my daughter when she goes. She is now 16 almost 17. We moved from ny and there i did find a dentist for her that i trusted well enough to leave her with so i could sit in the waiting room.
I dont exactly know what your fear of dentist are, but your not alone many people are. I think it is the needle in the mouth thing that freaks most people out and the not being able to see what they are doing. one question…..are you also scared of flying? Thats a serious question too. i have a reason for asking it too. will tell ya when you answer the question for me…lol.. But i can tell ya that you really need to figure out what it is that makes ya freak out so much. Putting off dental work is not a good thing at all…..after a certain you know as well as i do that teeth dont grow back once they are gone hun. so take care of them. I dont want to be like that jerk that compared his pain to everyone elses. But be grateful you havent been smacked around by a dentist….or did you have a bad experience with a dentist when you were young? did one tell you something wont hurt and it hurt like hell? i have always told my daughter that hell yeah this will hurt but not for long…..and the kid will sit and take a needle better than most adults i know. And i dont know if you have kids but please dont let them see you get this worked up over a dentist.
I hate going to the dentist because it cost so damn much. that is the only thing that keeps me from going like i need to. and trust me i need to go. i have one tooth that is literally broke down to the gum line…..cracked in half and half is missing…..its a bitch let me tell ya.
So hang in there girl……you will be fine..figure out the fear and over come it! you can do it!
Hi all,
I started on Friday with pain near my top back tooth, where I had a previous filling 5 months ago that exposed the nerve and required a pulp cap. The pain was mainly around my temple area and extremely intense and radiating to the rest of my head. Clutching my face in pain, rocking on the ground, hardly able to sleep. Neither Ibuprofin nor Tylenol nor Anbesol did much. The only thing that helped was hot(not TOO hot) salt water. Mix 1 Tablespoon of salt in a glass of hot water, then take a sip and hold the water around the tooth until the water cools down(about 20-30 seconds), and then spit it out. Then, take another sip, and repeat the whole process you have used up the whole glass. My tooth has been very hot/cold sensitive since the filling 5 months ago, and holding the hot water on it was EXCRUCIATING…. But, if you can take the pain for 2 or 3 minutes, it goes away completely about half way through the glass, and for me the pain stayed away for several hours. My dentist said that might have worked because it temporarily uses up all the nerve’s neurotransmitters and keeps it from sending additional pain signals once you get past the initial pain from the heat.
Anyhow, I went to the dentist on Tuesday (4 or 5 days after pain began) and he said the xrays showed no abscess or sign of infection. I also had a low fever at the time, and he said that I probably had some other illness that was contributing to the pain. He did file down the filling a bit where it looked like I was biting down on it hard, saying that the continuous biting pressure may have been keeping it from healing well. So anyhow, that night after my appointment, I noticed something else… the right-side roof of my mouth was swollen, and the swelling continued to get worse until my gumline was also swollen. I went to my primary care physician 2 days later on Thursday(today) and he said I appeared to have some sort of pharyngogeal infection or something(wasn’t sure exactly what he said). So he gave me a script for antibiotics, and 10 hours ago I took the first of 28 Amoxicillin pills. An hour ago I noticed that I could get somewhat bloody pus to come out from near the swollen bubble at my gumline if I massaged it with my finger or tongue.
So, I am hoping that the antibiotics work and the problem never even had anything to do with my tooth, but we will see. Man oh man I hope these pills work, because this last weekend was some of the worst pain I have ever been in. A bad toothache can take over your whole reality, effectively crippling you while the pain lasts.
BTW- my dentist has always complimented me about how wonderfully I take care of my teeth, so I guess that sometimes you’re just going to get a cavity no matter what you do. Although, even though I clean my teeth very well, I guess that my diet must be a contributing factor, since I do have quite the sweet tooth sometimes. Well, I am now a changed man, and after experiencing this pain I am going to go back to the healthful/pure eating habits I used to have (I have a BS degree in dietetics so I should have known better about the crappy food I eat out of laziness and lack of funds). Goodluck to everyone and don’t hesitate to see your Doctor, because sometimes the pain may seem like it is from your tooth but could actually be an unrelated infection or disease. BEST OF WISHES TO ALL OF YOU!!!
Well I guess we are all united in pain.
My filling fell out while munching on some chicken at lunch two weeks ago. At first Im like, “man this place sucks who put this piece of metal in my chicken.”
Now Im dieng. Im a pretty calm guy and the pain is so present Im cranky. Even to my girl. To make it worse i had dental work in january and my crappy benefits dont put out any more cash until january 09.
oh great! i dont know if i can make it three months. worse im reading if there is something called an abscese i could die.
i swear if i get an abscese and start dieng cauze my employer is to cheap to give contractors real dental benefits im flying to fucking chicago and going postal on them. my dentist from january was awash in gold chains and was like, “you need more work done.” i was like dude, i cant afford it, what dont you understand about that?
i drank a cup of coffee yesterday and the hot coffee went over the open tooth. it hurt so bad i almost took a crap in my pants as i wilted into the couch.
anyway.. good luck to all of you. counting the days until january 1
I am so feeling all of yall I have had a toothace for 2 weeks and the ONLY thing that helps is holding cold water in my mouth

Toothaches can be very annoying but if you follow the tips I give you in this article, you will see how easy it is to cure toothache fast.
First of all, you need to learn a little about toothache and why it occurs. There are actually two types of toothaches. The first type of toothache is one which is caused when the tooth gets in touch with extreme temperatures such as heat or cold. You may have noticed that when you eat cold, hard ice creams you feel a certain ache in your tooth. This pain is caused because our tooth enamel is sensitive to extreme temperatures. Obviously the best way to avoid such toothaches is to avoid eating foods which are either too hot or too cold.
There is another kind of toothache which is caused by an infection in the tooth or gums. This type of toothache can be very painful and involves swelling of gums. It is not however easy to get rid of this type of toothache, usually because it is hard to know where the pain is coming from. You may think that your front tooth is what is causing you pain, but the real culprit maybe a back tooth.
There are a couple of natural ways to cure toothache. For example, try to breath through your nose and expel air from your mouth. Doing so will help you avoid congestion in the nostrils caused by cold.
Sometimes toothache can be caused by nausea, fear, anxiety, etc. Such cases of toothache can be best cured by treating the original disease itself. Note that sometimes, along with toothache, you may also feel pain in your neck.
A simple way to cure toothache caused by nausea is to use a simple acupressure technique that I have mastered over the years and used successfully on many occasions. Hold the tip of your index finger firmly to the tip of your thumb to make a circle like ‘O’. Then look at a distant object, such as your office, or garden. Once you do this your nausea will be gone and so will your toothache.
Apart from the above causes, there can be many other causes behind toothaches. For example, your posture can cause toothache. How you sit and stand has an effect on your teeth. So, to avoid toothache, it is best you never lie down even if you feel tempted to do so. Always either sit down or stand. Lying down increases blood pressure and it may aggravate your toothache more than anything else.
While these remedies may help you in curing toothache, I would suggest that you take conventional painkillers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil), provided that these medicines won’t have any side effects on you. Best thing is to check with your doctor and he will prescribe you suitable painkillers.
Hi Jason,
I had the same thing happen to me…… a big filling in a molar fell out in the back…… At first it didn’t hurt at all in the morning when I woke up but…… as the day progressed it began throbbing and was so bad I did the cold water thing too… to fall asleep at night I held a pack of frozen spinach on my cheek until it all got numb.
Odd thing was that if and when I finally passed out that night, the next morning I felt painless…. my cheek and gums were a little sore but the tooth was pain free…
This went on for about two weeks until I finally figured out that the tooth was not in pain…. then I realized that my jagged tooth edges were cutting into my cheek when I ate or talked and there came the throbbing pain again.
I finally went to the drug store and bought some dental wax…used for kids with braces…… popped some of that in teh hole left by the fallen out filling…. and bam….. I was pain free during the days…… now I took it out at bedtime and really brushed and listerined the hole good….. there was a funky smell from the decay in the tooth but went to the dentist, about 6 months later and he filled it and laughed that I had temporarily solved the immediate problem……and pain… he said that the tooth was not infected, as I had suspected…….so….. all of you give this a try if you suspect that the pain might be the cause of a jagged, rough hole….
The dentist told me that the cheeks and gums are the most sensitive part of the mouth… hope this might help someone too…. it worked for me twice now as I have 30 year old silver fillings and they are starting to crumble….. little by little I’ll eventually have all that stuff out and pretty white filling instead….
Hope you all feel better….Rochelle

My name is Megan Terry.I have a reeally bad tooth ache.I don’t have any insurance so I can’t got get it pulled it cost to much to get it pulled.I have tried everything I can think of what else can I do?The only time I have ever had a tooth ache was when I was pregant with my first little girl,Now it seems like that is all I cry over any more.It is infected so I don’t know what to do Please somebody help me.Fast.
Three things that can work well vs toothache (I’ve researched this but am not a doctor):
1) Antibiotics. If you have a severe throbbing pain, that gets worse if you lie down and better when you stand up, then the pulp in the middle of your tooth is inflamed and the pain is because it’s pressing against the surrounding tooth. Infection is a likely cause – if so, amoxicillin or a similar antibiotic will end the pain within 24 hours.
2) Don’t eat anything containing sugar: jelly, fruit, tv dinners, etc. If you have a sharp pain which gets worse after you’ve eaten, then maybe your tooth is cracked, or broken, or has a missing filling. The sugar in your food is converted to acid by plaque bacteria in the tooth-crack and this acid attack the nerves in the middle of your tooth.
3) Put 2 or 3 frozen peas in your mouth and hold them against the aching tooth. Replace the peas every 3-5 minutes, so you’ll need a bag of them beside you, wrapped in a towel or something to stop them defrosting. This reduces most toothache in 60 seconds, in my experience, but is a bit inconvenient. Don’t fall asleep with peas in your month.

if its advise your looking for…..read all the postings here. If its money or free dental work your looking for……….LOL you think everyone here is rich and on here biotching and moaning because they are bored and would rather suffer than go to a expensive dentist?
I found this site for the very same reasons as the rest of you! Never ever put aspirin or a pain reliever directly on the source of the pain. Just saw that a few times and wanted to advise against that.
im 7 weeks pregnant with really bad sickness now i got really bad toothache im goin 2 a emergency dentist 2day as i cant stick the pain i dont no how much they will charge me dont care just hope not 2 much the trouble is no 1 wants 2 go 2 the denist as they charge 2 much
i posted here a long time ago with an abcess tooth that i STILL havent had pulled out. i will soon, but its just hard for me to get to town since i live in the country with no vehicle. i have tried pretty much all the remedies..cloves, vanilla, teething gel, etc. the only thing that works for me is alternating tylenol and ibuprofen every 4 hours, and asprin, aleive as needed. (dont take alieve along with tylenol) also if its just killing me i chew an asprin right where the tooth is. tastes awful.. but helps. OH and booze… just dont overdo it because you dont want a hangover ontop of a toothache.
as most of the people reading this, i have a big fear of dentists. but right now i wish i could afford to see one. when scheduling an appointment, i myself would make sure that he would put me on a dimerol IV plus the nitrous gas. i want no memories of a surgery. if the dentist wont negotiate with that, i will show up to his office all messed up on street pharmaceuticals.
im still swishing bourbon around in my mouth right now. i cant seem to find my bottle of ambesol, but if i could it probably would not help me much. i have been taking ibuprofen and tylenol for the last few days. i have not been able to sleep without tylenol pm. now i have a bit of hydrocodone, i have taken a very high dose tonight and my tooth still hurts. i have two molars that are highly decayed; they feel just fine, but there is another molar that hurts like hell. i know that it will soon crack apart as did my other two decayed molars. i was not blessed with good teeth by any means, and i believe that im going to do as my father did, and have ALL of them removed and replaced.
well, i want to do that, but i dont belive that i can afford it. i recently turned 24 and my dental insurance dropped me upon my 24th birthday. i feel like the biggest dumbass on earth for not having my teeth checked out a few months ago.
GOOD LUCK to everyone reading this who has tooth pain. the only thing worse than toothache is heartache. may God bless you all.

Where do I begin? Got punched for no good reason. Tooth 13 had a piece cracked off but was OK. #14 got a vertical fracture but no one knew. Five years later it acted up – must have cracked further and into the pulp space. Got a root canal but was warned of possible vertical fracture. Had various symptoms through the years that I now believe were from the tooth: Ear pangs, PVCs, stomach issues, ect. Finally in 2006, must have cracked further into missed MB2 root. Had root canal redone and MTA put in small crack in MB2 root. Palatal canal was left alone because it looked all right on x-ray. Now after that, for the past 2 1/2 years still have symptoms. Here goes: Earache with slight ringing in the ear diagnosed as eustachian tube dysfunction, toothache type feeling with spike in the head lowgrade headache (left side), sinus trouble (has improved), get this – parotitis in the left cheek (same side as tooth), neck soreness which has now settled on the other side of the tooth (right side), PVCs (on and off – when on comes in strings of them like once every three beats or so), and crinkling in the head (has improved), and waking up at night sometimes not really knowing exactly why. Now I am getting new symptoms that are scaring me which include red papules around arms and trunk (dry skin?), tingling in arms and legs and trunk, and sometimes a gentle shaking/trembling (stress?) mostly when I go to bed (the first time I thought there was an earthquake going on), and also getting feelings of doom. I believe that a relatively minor crack in the tooth is creating a chronic low grade infection over many years that may be causing lots or all of my symptoms. There are no symptoms with the tooth itself – can chew OK with it and no sensitivity to hot or cold. It has no problem with percussion either. What do you think? Anybody else have these kinds of symptoms associated with their tooth? The amazing thing is that now the x-rays of the tooth look OK too. Am I just panicking over nothing? The headache is pretty much gone, the toothache and cheekache are better, the ear ringing is better I think, sore neck is better but I’m scared it is going systemic with these new symptoms of tingling and shaking and the feeling of doom.
Hello fellow Sufferers 🙁
I went to the dentise and had me teeth checked she filled in a cavaity on my molar, which i complained was hurting!!!, And she blaimed the pain on my Wisdom tooth!
So i go back and complain she gets out a little metal hammer and knocks on all my teeth saying does this feel any diffrent on the other teeth!? i said no cause it didn’t, So then she blaims the wisdam tooth again!!
Now Day later, it feels well diffrent and is killing me, its like!! you know when she injected the num stuff using the needle, its like the tooth it self is num, and hurts like mad when i close me tteeth!
I HATE HER! I’m going to have to find a new dentise and ask them to open up the molar and do a root canal! she thinks im lieing… WHY WOULD I BE LYING,
Tbh my whole left side of my face is hurting!! omg dudes n gals!!! what about the ear pain that comes along free with the toothache!! that makes me wonna shoot myself alone!
A few months ago i got a cavity n i ignored it bc it didnt hurt! NEVER DO THAT!!Than half the tooth broke off and my gums n teeth are killing me!!! i have been in HORRIBLE PAIN for days..I rather have servere cramps than this shit. I have never been in such pain in my life!!! Theres no reason i shouldnt have went to my dentist … Just pure laziness!!! Nothing helps. I must have downed 4 bottles of orajel … all it does is numb my tongue n make me spit.. I just gargled hot water n salt and it dulled the pain alittle. I did drink vodka and took 4 aleve’s and i was fine for a while… The nights are the worst.. I havent slept n days…i owe my dentist $$ and im broke.. so i dont know what to do!! All i know is im at the breaking point! i dont know how much longer i can deal..
WOW im not the only one. I hate my bad teeth = (
Over the course of 7 years most/all of my fillings and temp crowns have worn away . fallen out, dissapeared.. what ever. I am now left with a mouth full of decay and PAIN. I haven’t gone to the dentist because of the cost and on top of that its almost impossible to get an appointment! I am very embarrassed of my teeth and have alot of anxiety letting anyone look in my mouth. I feel like they might judge me. Looking at me/my smile you would never imagine that I have so many dental problems lurking in the back part of my mouth. It makes me feel like aub-standard human being at times. Im always waiting to be exposed if someones looking too close when i yawn or yell out something. I live in fear of the stigma thats follows people with poor dental health.
IVE HAD ENOUGH… im taking out a massive loan and having all the offending teeth REMOVED. I am in so much pain~~~ I have not slept in two days. I have tried every twisted leap of faith home remedy that i can think of. Right after I finish this i am going to buy a BIG bottle of vodka. BUT WAIT… will the vodka cancel out the effects of my amoxicillin??? This is so unfair!! This pain is unreal. Im tired of going to my general practioner for anitbiotics for a tooth ache… they always ask me ” Why are you here, you should see a dentist?I always want to answer their stupid question with another stupid question.. “Your a doctor, why dont you pay for my extractions and root canals and fillings and follow up appointments and medication and also why dont you shut up and just write out the precription im paying you to do.???” I FEEL FOR EVERYONE OF YOU!!! Thank YOU all for letting me rant.
Will give follow up report on the vodka situation~
Ok i desided to post because i too have emense pain THROBING DOOM! in my upper left near moler teeth two of the them, funny cause i have had one removed there form a very bad infection the puffed my face.there is a nerve like OUT and its the worst pain ever,I also have a tooth that originaly decayed almost completely and then it stoped hurting never gives me trouble.TEETH REaLLY SUCK ARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Mouthful of very strong alcohol such as whiskey or vodka helps the pain. Also take aspirin, and oil clove is suppose to be highly recommended.
I’m more confused than ever. Last week my crown on upper right, third one from last popped off. The next day my dentist re-cemented it and said to get a new one next year when my insurance kicks in. He also said a little cavity was forming on tooth but I’d be alright till next year. He said the tooth already had a root canal. Then last saturday, two days ago, I started having unbearable pain on lower right molar directly under top molar of the crown that popped off. The pain also went to upper molar above it and pain across top and bottom on right side. I started taking 4 advil every 6 hours and it only helped temporarily. I gave my dentist a call on sunday, and he said to take 2 aleve in between those 6 hours of 4 advil. This delayed the pain more but it still came back. I went in to have x-rays and no infection showed up. The dentist said the lower molar’s nerve was still alive and to wait a few days to see which tooth is the problem. Meanwhile I’m in terrible pain. Hopefully I can get in tomorrow. Part of the problem is cost. I already had two new crowns on other teeth put on this year. I really can’t afford any more major work done. Should I get an extraction? Any suggestions?
Ok a little help to my friends out there who can’t see the dentist for X amount of days and are ready to take a long walk off a short pier.
VODKA.. cheap vodka like McCormicks. Take a swig and swish in mouth for 30 seconds, spit out, you don’t want to swallow cheap vodka mixed with spit. This helps with the pain I repeat every hour on the hour. Keep taking the advil for the inflamation!! Now, not everyone reading this will try this route but… marijuana… aka* the pot, refer, left handed cigarette, so on and so on. This helps with the stress that your going through. Less stress naturally equals less pain. Now while your out buying pot you might want to ask if your “shopkeeper” has any leads on where to pick up some serious pain killers. I DO NOT SUGGEST using a street physician over a medical doctor or DDS … but if your at the end of your rope.. thats just where you are. If you dont have a clue how to hook up with such a character, ask your son or daughter as I am sure they know where to go. LOL. BEER BEER BEER BEER,,,, if you can’t get pot get beer. Now… your good and wasted but still in discomfort. I say keep your hands busy!! Video games, blog about your tooth, knitting, thumb war, patty cake any thing where you have to dedicate your brain power elsewhere. YOGA… or just basic stretching, nice and relaxing and meditation can help you!! The thing is to relax your mouth and your not going to do that if the only thing your thinking about is YOUR MOUTH.
Lets Review.
Step 1: Vodka *** Step 2: ADVIL *** Step 3: Pot and Beer *** Step 4: Busy hands *** Step 5:RELAX
GOOD LUCK
I finally gave in and went in to get a root canal two days after I posted from before. It’s a good thing too cause my bottom right molar had an abcess with my right lower jaw swollen. My dentist could only do part of the root canal cause of the infection. He drilled the hole and I think got the pulp out, but I’m not sure. He packed it with cotton pellets so the gas from the infection, which he says causes the pain, can escape. Meanwhile he’s got me on the antibiotic Clindamycin hcl 300 mg – a total of 30 caps until I’m finished. Then I go in this week to finish up the root canal. He said it would still be about three days of some pain once I started taking antibiotic. The antibiotic is what will get rid of the pain. I had a little pain but nothing like before the root canal. Hopefully when he finishes up the root canal I won’t have to worry about any more pain. It’s nice to save the tooth and be out of pain, but the next toothache I get I’m seriously thinking about just getting it extracted. I’ve had root canals with crowns before only to have decay again in the tooth which means the dentist cleaning up the decay and having to pay another $800-1000 for a new crown two or three years later, and I’m really tired of this bull crap. Dentists help people, but I get the feeling they’re really in this for the money and suspect that they will insist on doing root canals and crowns for the money even though they know the tooth should be extracted or will be extracted in the near future. A friend of mine said he got to the point where he just got all his molars pulled and got patials and said it’s the best thing he’s ever done. He’s only got his front teeth and I think his first molar after front teeth. He said he never has to worry about teeth pain and the expense that goes with it. I asked him how he chewed his food as he gradually lost his teeth. He said he got used to it and eventually learned to chew with less teeth. I’m kind of leaning on that theory as well. I’m tired of the pain; tired of maxing out my insurance every year and paying out of my pocket. Although the only one to blame is myself. I quit smoking ten years ago and took up a lot of gum chewing and tic tac – life savers sucking. I’ve now hit rock bottom with teeth problems and have given up the gum chewing and candy sucking. That includes sugarless gum as well. If you chew enough of that you can still get teeth problems. If I get nervous and feel like putting something in my mouth I now just suck on a toothpick.
Ok. I have been hunting for tooth and extraction pain releif. I was in the hospital with bleeding ulcers because of taking ibuprofen the dentist gave me and i asked 3 doctors if it was ok to take. My dental office totally is unsimpathetic so I was waiting for a root canal and ended up having paramedics take me to the emergency room. When I got out of the hospital i went to another dentist had the tooth pulled couldnt wait 4 to 6 weeks for approval for a root canal and now its been 10 days and guess what? I AM STILL IN VERY BAD PAIN. I think I am having pain in another tooth behind the one I got pulled. But the dentist tells me there is no evidence of that although i have a very large filling there. people tell me to sue
the dentist but all i want is to be out of this pain. And now they wont give me proper pain medicine but when i was in the hospital they gave me introvenous deladad. I feel like im gonna go crazy. Its been 3 weeks of hell and I just about lost my life over this tooth problem.
Any advice?
Just pull the teeth that are really hurting you …….. the pain is not worth it……
but if the DENTIST tells you he can do a root canal and save the tooth —– please do it…..
you only pull if you have to…..if you don’t have the money…….get a loan…..just get it fixed….having your own teeth is so much better than having dentures………….get the money!
Well what can i say, i was in pain for a few days, had a dentist appointment I made and all they did was cleaned my teeth….another appointment set for 2 weeks, still have 8 days to go….I got some antibotics the other day from a walk in clinic and some major pain relievers…But 3 or 4 days later and Im at work going crazy…Thinking about EVIL things I COULD DO to take the pain away….So litterally crazy at the moment(pain is hard to hide), this Craziness is caused by the pain im enduring. Yet if anyone truly bugs me i may completely and utterly lose it…I understand now how a person could walk into a school and kill as many as possible…They were driven mad, luckily for me I only have to survive this craziness for 8 more days.
Mark – I feel for you. Hang in there and don’t do anything crazy. If you’re in that much pain, I would call back the dentist and tell them that you don’t know if you can wait that long. Or you could go to a different dentist and tell them that they need to do something with the tooth.
The only problem with a toothache is a lot of times it’s hard to tell exactly which tooth is the problem. My dentist told me that many times people get the wrong tooth root canaled or extracted cause the tooth can send mixed messages to the brain on which tooth is really hurting, especially if the pain travels to other teeth and other parts of the mouth and cheek. Unfortunately for me, I had to wait till the tooth was abscessed and my cheek was swollen before the dentist and I knew for sure which tooth was the problem.
But if you’re pretty sure which tooth it is, I would go in there sooner rather than later to either get a root canal or get it extracted, whichever fits your situation best. Usually if you demand them to do a certain tooth, they’ll do it as long as they have your permission. Otherwise, my dentist told me the reason that he waits so late is cause he doesn’t want to get sued by doing the wrong tooth. Good luck!
i know it sucks! Ive had a minor toothache for a couple of years it started out just being an area that bugged me a little because food always got stuck there, but now its starting to be extremely painful it causes my sinus to hurt which before i thought my sinuses were making my teeth hurt now i know because my ear is starting to hurt my head hurts all around that area and the weird thing is it doesnt feel like one tooth it feels like the area in between 2 teeth. I can see another cavity but it doesnt hurt at all. Why doesnt it?

My tooth has been hurting since Saturday the 25th and so I went to the dentist today. His x-rays were not sufficient for him to decide the problem so I went to an endodontist and they stated that I didn’t need a root canal. The problem which the dentists said may be the problem is that I grind my teeth at night and it continues to be painful. The dentist kept stating that the problem was tooth no. 9 and 10 hopefully someone knows where this is. The endodontist stated that I would need a mouthguard to sleep with at night from the dentist but he said that it costs about $600 since I have no insurance. Is there another way to alleviate this soar besides the ibuprofen and anti-inflammatory pills since they have not worked? I think I may overdose soon over the amount I have put in my mouth so I really need someone’s dental advice.
Peanuts – I’ve never had that problem, that’s got to be frustrating. But $600 for a freakin mouthguard? These dentists are worse than lawyers. You can get a football mouthguard at the store for under $10. Not that that would work for your grinding, but there’s no way in heck a mouthguard should cost $600. But unfortunately you probably are going to have to end up getting the mouth guard if grinding is causing the pain.
1. See if you can get a payment plan going, say $100-200/month.
2. Call around for other dentists and ask what they charge for a mouthguard.
Other than that I don’t know what to tell you other than you’re screwed. It seems these dentists always end up winning by either paying them way more than they should be getting or suffering in pain.
people…..see an endodontist…he/she has specialized traing in figuring out what is going on and how to best treat the situation……call your local endondontist…if u dont then go ahead and suffer…your choice
With all due respect Mr/Ms Dentist, many people come on here looking for pain solutions because they have neither the monetary resources or the insurance to pay for an “endodontist”. Please keep that in mind the next time you feel the urge to preach at someone.

years ago, just like this evening, I had one of the worst toothaches in my life(I’m now 30). I suffered through a few days till I got my paycheck and went straight to the dentist after work with my head wrapped in a scarf; Western Dental. As soon as I walked in I went up to the front desk and told the receptionist that I needed an extraction horribly bad, that they needed to see me ASAP, that I didnt want the damn thing in my mouth any longer, that I felt that some DEMON had buried himself with in it and was burrowing with his trident all about the interior of this cavity. when I finally got in to be seen, aafter the 20 minute wait and the 20 minute X-ray, the guy sat me down and stared at the tooth, I got real self conscious about it. I’ve always been really embarrassed about the condition of my teeth, and haven’t been to the dentist for some time now because of the shape they’re in. when I would complain to my mother about how my teeth felt strange, hurt, or were inflamed, this was when I was a young teenager, she would tell me that by the time she was 25 she had 5 teeth pulled, my mothers dad had practicably no teeth left in his mouth by the time he was in his mid-thirties.
tonight, I have the feared hole in the tooth once again, that deep cavernous sloping inward that upon examination speaks of an eventual downfall, its been slowly caving in the past few years, crumbling apart. I think the pain may go away in a few more days which will give me some more time to save up some money to eventually get the thing ripped out, but if it doesnt, I fear that that it may be the death of me. I have grown so tired of tooth pain, I have lived with it for so long that I feel it is the one legacy that my family sends off to its next of kin. In my mouth right now I have 5 root canals, two extractions, and a few more root canals coming up. I think you can safely say that I was not very aware of the pain that awaited me come these days of reckoning. I have my head wrapped in a different scarf and it seems to have helped with the pain, or perhaps its the Ambesol I caked over the half tooth like so much frosting, in any event, things may be looking up.
peace in the middle teeth!
