Some Thoughts:
- When you have a tooth ache everything else takes second place.
- Oh, and the tooth ache always happens on a bank holiday weekend, to ensure maximum pain, and remind you to go to the bloody dentist more often!
- Vodka, rubbed onto the infected gum/teeth is a god-send for pain relief. It lasts almost 3 hours and it’ll let you get some measure of rest at night.
- Have an understanding partner who’ll take care of you and fuss over you.
- Brush, floss and see your dentist more often.
- Brush, floss and see your dentist more often.
- Brush, floss and see your dentist more often.
- Brush, floss and see your dentist more often.
I’ll probably have to get a root-canal next week, the tooth is dead so hopefully it won’t be too sore. (I’m not too hopeful though..)

Well, I posted here a couple of years ago when i was near death with toothache. I must say having read furthe posts from last year, the best relief is sharing the pain with all of you lot. Now one the that really gets my back up is people that say toothache isnt the worst pain in the universe, they obviously have only experienced mild aching. Believe me if you don’t feel like you would rather have boiling chip fat thrown over your sunburned face when you have the pain… Its not the kind of toothache were talking about! This toothache is like all the demons from the darkest reaches of Satan’s stinking dungeon’s coming together and feeding all their blackened hatred into your face!! its fuking evil!!
May the tooth fairy be with you !!
I SO AGAREE WITH YOU XORANIUM. I HAVE HAD PEOPLE SAY WHAT YOU HAD TO CALL INTO WORK FOR A TOOTACHE. THOSE PEOPLE THINK THEY COULD HANDLE THE PAIN, HUH! I DONT THINK SO. I TRY TO EXPLAIN TO MY HUSBAND THAT I RATHER GIVE BIRTH TO ALL OF MY CHILDREN AGAIN AND AT THE SAME TIME WITH NO DRUGS AND THAT STILL WOULD NOT BE CLOSE TO THE PAIN OF A TOOTHACHE.
Hey. Seventeen year old here and as a child I never brushed my teeth. Now I think I have an abscess, and something to do with my wisdom teeth and an exposed nerve. Either way nothing I’ve done is helping. Hydrocodone, Orajel, Advil, I think I’m finally going to try and sleep as it’s 2:30 a.m. here.
can excessive antibiotics cause you to lose your teeth?
I am a 22 year old student who has an inflamed tooth due to a previous filling tapping at the nerve, and right now it is tearing my life apart. All I can do is lie in bed in agony, I write this at 6.14 am UK time because the most amount of sleep I can get is 4 hours, and that is dosed completely up on Ibuprofen, Antibiotics and tooth anaesthetic. I’ve tried all the remedies i’ve seen on the internet, and none provide anything other than temporary relief. My liver must be destroyed. And the worst thing is the dentist won’t treat me till 12 march! I can’t live like this in the meantime! I have a dissertation and so much stuff going on at the moment, and I simply can’t do anything because i’m completely debilitated due to agonising pain. I’m beside myself quite frankly.
Also, the best remedy i’ve had so far is finding this blog, and seeing there are people out there who relate to my pain, most people have been fairly dismissive of the agony that i’m in.
lots of great suggestions here, it is nice to know that I am not alone in my pain and I am not the only one who has thought of ending it all with a spork. haha. I have been reading this site with some chuckles- in between crying with pain and probably delirious from lack of sleep. I do feel your pain. But seriously this hurts like hell. The only thing that temporarily helps is holding water in my mouth for a minute and doing it over and over and over. 🙁 If I dont do this I feel like I am in a panic and am afraid of what could happen. up until 3:30 last night holding water in my mouth every 2 minutes being careful not to doze off and choke! the peroxide helps for a minute. good luck to you all. I hope everyone feels better soon.
Interesting tales here. Mine, in front I have a tooth busted clean down to the gum line. This remnant of the tooth that is left has a small hole in the center, which runs all the way up into the gums. Food, etc. has become lodged into this hole, which creates a FOUL smell. This of course has caused infection which is now spreading to my other teeth. All are rotted anyway & simply breaking off at this point. After 40 some years of lousy tooth care. The pain comes in waves. Shooting pain. I have taken an entire gauntlet of narcotics. Including but not limited to Roxicet itself. Trying to eat as much PenV as I can, but not working…..
Hello all,
I feel your pain, literally! Well, not at the moment. Just had a root canal yesterday. It was the 12th one in my 33 years on this Earth. I don’t know where I’m going to be by the time I’m 40? The ‘wonderful’ thing is that those first couple root canals that I had about 12 years ago are beginning to fail and actually give me mild pain again! I thought once the tooth was dead and capped, that was the end of it, but no. Seriously looking into getting everything pulled and having dentures, but everyone says to keep your teeth as long as you can.
Anyway, I know where you all are. I’ve been there quite often. I keep a stash of Vicodin just in case and have been on iBuprofen for a couple weeks straight before.
Keep on trying to pull through, get to a dentist as soon as possible after the first hint of pain. Start taking pain meds if there’s even a small twinge! The earlier you start the better. And if you can in any way decrease bloodflow to that part of the mouth, give it a try. Sometimes I find tilting my head in the opposite direction of the tooth that’s hurting helps a little. Sleep with a wedge (or many pillow) under your back and head to keep the blood from being able to pump to your head moreso that in regular upright life.
I have a broken tooth, and it hurts soooo bad! It is on the bottom of my mouth, and it is broken half way through the tooth! I have been using orajel like crazy, and it’s friday, i still have days to wait, I don’t know how much longer I can wait!!!!!
people i feel for you all, i had a horriffic experience for the last two months with wisdom teeth. it got so bad i was thinking about the pliers too.
thank the lord the company i had been working for had paid for some of my health insurance so i cud just about afford it.
this day last week after waiting nearly 3months to get it done i got 3 of my wisdom teeth ripped out and boy it couldnt have come sooner. top left one had broken in my gum and had come down in bits causing the start of a mind-numbingly sore abyssess. top right one wasnt too bad but it was puching all my top teeth together making them really sore
bottom one on right was comming up at practically a right angle crushing all my lower teeth together – oh sweet jesus the pain-for this one loads of gum had to be cut back and it got drilled out and stitched up
the surgeon asked me was i nervous- had the man ever felt proper tooth pain in his life ?
no way was i nervous had he asked me to run into the theater eand hop right up on the bed amoung all the scalpels i would have said no bother doc!
THE ONLY THING THAT KILLED MY PAIN A BIT was nurofen plus painkillers and a thing called ambesol which actually numbs ur mouth a bit(its got somthing like lidocaine in it)
oh and while i was waiting for the surgery my dentist prescribed me ‘Flagl’ tablets to help with the inflamation, they helped a bit.
i have to say im really concerned about what im reading from the bloggers from the states i think its completely scandelous that one of the richest countries in the world has such a awful health system for its people. health insurance here in ireland isnt cheap but its affordable to most. plus to see a doctor is 40-50 euro and the emergeny room visit about the same if ur just seeing a doctor/nurse (i.e. no procedures) my tooth operation cost me about 270 including two external consultations with my surgeon. the whole procedue without insurance would have cost me cost about 3,500 in total.
i remember when i was in the states o a holiday and hadnt a clue how the system worked i went to any doctors clinic because i had such bad kidney infection. i had holiday insurance but they wouldnt accept it and told me id have to pay 300-400 dollars which i really didnt have – only for a doctor took me on her lunch break for 50 dollars and gave me enough free drug samples for 5days i was screwed.
QUESTION: why is it if the people vote for whos in office do the american people vote in presidents who allow the big drug companies and medical industry to make all the money while regular people cant afford proper health care in one of the supposedly developed countries in the world?? honestly im really interested, healthcare is a big issue in ireland we dont have the best system but its sure better than that.

I wish I could answer that question for you… I wish I could solve the problem, as well. I’m twenty-three and live in Illinois. Because of our lovely healthcare system and the fact that my father didn’t know how to be a man, my sister and I were lucky if we made it to the dentist every other year. My wisdom teeth have been steadily growing in now for about two years. They’ve set up a vile, evil little schedule, too! They’ll grow in ever so slighty, tearing through gums and making my life a living hell… then stop for about four or five months. Then it’ll start all over again, and it’s all a bitch. My particular problem right now is that both my top ones are living nightmares. The right one has completely broken off on the top of the gumline, and now there’s a dip in the gum section that is making part of the tooth next to it exposed as well… The left one has grown in sideways AND crooked. It has since started rotting away from the middle out. Literally an hour ago, I went back there to get whatever food debris that has accumulated throughout the day out with the toothbrush and found out that half of it is now wiggling in the socket. I have no clue what I’m going to do about it either. I have no insurance, and with the rising cost of EVERYFRICKINTHING breaking my and everyone elses’ banks, I can’t get any of them yanked. I feel like such a disgusting person. I mean, I’m twenty-three, and I have rotten and missing teeth!!! The reason why I found this particular forum is because I was looking up information on how to do an in-home tooth extraction. That’s right. I’m looking up info on how to yank this bitch out myself. We have microchips in our animals, and satellites that can take nifty pictures for Google Earth… but we can’t fixed this uber fucked up healthcare system. I’ve never had kids (yes, I’m a chic), and from what I’ve heard it’s a cakewalk compared to the hellacious, seventh circle of hell pain that is associated with this bullshit. It’s the kind of pain that you can only sit with while you clamp your teary eyes shut and pound your fist into your thigh while the waves pulsate anywhere from your neck to behind your eyeball. I have that pain to look forward to tonight… I can just feel it coming. It’s tingling back there now, but that’s how it starts. In a few hours, I will be swearing like a sailor, cursing the gods, and inflicting pain on and around my legs in an attempt to distract myself from the torture. Cheers!!! Oh, and thanks government… you greedy, life force sucking bastards lining your pockets and taking tax money to pay for your prostitutes and drugs. God Bless America!!!
I have had alot of dental work done within the past like 10 months. I have had abscesses and at that point it is so painful nothing seems to work to help the pain. What I have found to help is get a towel, wet it and throw it in the microwave for about 30-45 seconds or until it is as hot as you can possible stand it. If it is too hot for you to place on skin the let it sit a moment to let it cool off some. When you can handle the heat place the hot towel on the side of your face where your having the most pain and repeat once the towel starts to cool off. I take Aleve (2 tabs) and place the towel on the face, you can even use vodka or whiskey around the site, just make sure that you use a clean swab or make sure you wash your hands before you place them in your mouth. If the pain is too much to deal with then go to the Emergency Room, they can not refuse you for any reason. When you get there explain the situation if you can and have them look at the area. Also, most ERs have a “on call” dentist that can take you if you dont have insurance. Once again the dentist has to see you and do something about the pain, but more then likely it wont be until the morning if you are visiting the ER at night. That is some of the advice I can give. Another thing that is a blessing when you have a bad toothache, Chicken Broth, the heat and the salt that is in the soup helps. Dont get the stuff that has the noodles, get just plain chicken broth, better yet is the chicken bullion cubes and mix with hot water. If you dont have insurance from your job then ask about low cost insurance, if you dont have a job contact your Department of Health and Human Services, they should be able to get you in touch with someone about insurance. Good luck everyone! Hope your pain goes away soon. I know what its like, there is nothing like it. Just remember HEAT IS YOUR FRIEND!!!!!
I am wailing and crying as I type this. I’ve tried every home remedy I could think of while taking the antibiotics my dentist gave me for my abscess. It won’t go away, and just keeps getting more swollen and painful. My mom cancelled my dental appointment because she couldn’t afford it. It hurts so bad, I have migraines, can’t eat, and can’t sleep anymore. I can’t do my homework, and can’t think. I JUST WANT TO DIE SO THIS PAIN WILL GO AWAY. I don’t know what to do. I can’t escape from this agony!
mmm, alot of problems. One thing i would like to say is “I HOPE YOU’RE SATISFIED THATCHER” (<this only applies for the UK) Well im sitting under a blanket in my room Writing this, in pain of course (we all are). yes i have a hole in my tooth, fruit and nut bar at xmas took it off, now 3 months on, the pulp has gone and how it kills.
DONTS:
DONT GET STONED, the pain only gets worse.
DONT USE NO MORE NAILS, it sounds stupid but hay it worked for about 2 days but then it falls out and the pain is back and not nice.
DONT SIT WITH AN ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH ON THE HOLE HOPEING IT WILL RIP OUT THAT GOD DAM NERVE, because it only makes the gum hurt.
TRYS:
try a little meditation, even if you dont know how, just try it good to calm the pain down.
try a hot bath, with all your girlfriends soaps and stuff in it, its not bad.
try going for a jog or something, it works till you get home a take a huge cold drink.
But the last thing, bit late now is DONT VOTE FOR Margaret Thatcher!!!, because she will only privatise the NHS Dental service and now all of us on low income or whatever now need to either search for a dentist who provides NHS services or pay for a very expensive private service.
How is it that such a tiny little part of my body can bring the entire world to a screeching halt? For years I have been dealing with a rotten tooth on the right and now that it has fallen out (all except for the root), things have begun to deteriorate on the left. Tonight after hours of trying salt, water, cloves, motrin, complaining, bargaining, denial, anger and down-right pouting, it was time to call pharmacist. He’s my best friend now…well, at least until morning. The pills may be a year old, but the per-ko-cet has brought some much needed relief. Finally, the pain has subsided to a dull roar. This med that should be knocking me flat on my face, has(gratefully) brought me to the place where I’m no longer shouting to myself and God and rolling around in pain.
This has definitely got to stop! “Go to the dentist” is a simple answer for those who have health insurance. After hours and emergency numbers for area dentists are little more than a tease. Who really wants me to call at 2am so they can get out of their cozy beds and come take care of my tooth? From where exactly should I pull out the hundreds of dollars that it will take to fix up the problems in my mouth? Why isn’t dental care considered a part of health care and covered under the provincial OHIP system here in Canada? All this talk of how the health of our teeth is connected to our overall health…sometimes taking care of yourself isn’t easy.
This site has been a great way to pass the time waiting for the drugs to kick in. I’ve even been thinking that maybe I should go back to school and become a dentist…or just play the lottery this week.
Good luck to you all! And as my grandma always liked to say, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”
Okay, here’s my update. I finally called my mom on the phone and told her that I couldn’t deal with the pain anymore. So we try to track down a dentist that has an emergency number (mine didn’t). We finally find an emergency dental clinic about an hour away that’s open 24 hours. We get in there, got my exam done and a set of xrays for my abscess (which spread to the other side of my mouth and infected another tooth). I told the dentist that I had trouble swallowing also, and right then and there he wrote a referral to the nearest hospital in orlando. He told me to go there immediately for an IV. At the time, I couldn’t wait because I was in agony. I got to Dr. Phillips Hospital ER in Orlando, and was taken into fast track within 20 minutes. I was given clindamycin through IV as well as some pain killers and anti nausea medication. The pain for the most part was gone, because the pain medication worked quickly. I am glad it’s all over. I was given an Rx for the clindamycin and pain meds. I’m so happy, I can go on with my life now.
man, i got my tooth pulled on monday it is now wednesday and it still @#$%^&$ hurts. The root had a hook to it and it really #$%#*& hurt. (dont mind me im in pain) and now its infected and now my other tooth is in pain also, the one next to it.
he said “do you want me to pull the other tooth” i stupidly said no and now i am in severe pain with a me holding the side of my face, oh and did i say that this morning it was still bleeding.
so here is my only pain killer advice to give you:
HAVE SOME WHOOPIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(LOL) Better you feel pleasure for while to forget about the pain!
I can’t handle this pain. I had a baby 11 months ago and found out that my benefits ended during mat leave, I couldn’t afford any work on my teeth.I even had pregnancy gingivitis and had four teeth break from drainage of calcium which is ocmmon in pregnant women. I just got married in january ’08 and now have benefits. in the last three weeks i am now on my second set of clendomycin (allergic to amoxil/penicillin) and on apo-metroxolidin (forgive me for the spelling) plus tylenol 3’s and extra strength ibuprofen for a broken/absessed tooth…..NOTHING IS HELPING!!!!I have been in emergency 2 seperate nights now for a very tiring re-prescribed and yet again re-prescribed evening. i have a baby to take care of and had to start back to work this week as my mat leave just ended. I am a nanny and feel awful as I am typing this at 4:28A.M. with having NO sleep and am going to have to call in to my employer. I can’t eat and even as I breathe in air my tooth shears with pain. My whole left side of my face is swollen and my insides are burning from all the meds I have had to take. My dentist won’t do the root canal because my infection is too bad and I even went to another dentist and he said the same thing….I too, like so many of you am ready to pull and drain this thing myself. I am still taking the meds in hopes that I don’t get blood poisoning but am in agony. I have to laugh at the irony behind meds that you have to “take with food” when I can’t eat. I am surviving off room-temp protein shakes. Truth be told that it sucks when you don’t have coverage, but with a LOT of demanding , a major amount of PERSISTANCE and a dentist who hopefully is kind hearted and would rather make up a long-period small payment plan than have a person agonize for months which can lead to malnutrition, blood poisoning the whole deal…I am offering that bit of advice. Most dentists will go out of their way to make a “confidential”payment plan. Don’t be afraid to ask and tell the dentist the truth about your financial state….you’ld be surprised with what he/she may try to do for you. What have you got to lose, you’re in agony now too, just give it a shot. Anyway, I am heading back to bed to try to attempt sleeping up again, the pressure is just to great when laying down. The best of luck to you all. Thanks for letting me vent- it does give me some relief.
Imagine the night before you’re about to go on vacation to Europe and everything is fine, you’re at your buddies party drinking and having a good time, and gradually a sharp throbbing pain starts to occur on two teeth on opposite sides of your jaw. You think to yourself, “AAAWW what the ****!” Knowing that you have two very bad cases of tooth abscess, you decide to go on the vacation anyways hoping that the vacation will sooth your teeth. Biggest mistake of my life. Anyways you get to you destination and the plane ride there was hell and you wished that the plane would explode similar to the plane from “final destination”. So after 12 hours of emo fantasies, your at your Grandpas house and things have seem to get better as there is no more waves of pain and throbbing, but only what feels like your tooth has enlarged. However that night as you go to bed on the rooftop of an European house, yes you’ve guessed it, the pain returns with a BANG. This time the pain is twice as much and lasts through the night into the afternoon. Being a hero, you decide to give yourself a P.H.D in dentistry and pick at your teeth with tooth picks. After 2 weeks of intensive tooth picking and constant pain, you literally go insane and gain some sort of brains to go see a dentist. So now you find yourself in a foreign country addicted to antibiotics receiving two needles on the ass twice a day for 3 weeks, until the bacteria is gone and you get both your teeth pulled out. “THERE IS A GOD”, you think to yourself on the plane returning back home. You notice that an entire vacation and summer has been wasted but you honestly don’t give a sh*t because you’re so relieved. Two years later, on march break, you begin to experience the same pain only on one of your upper teeth while writing a story about your previous encounters with tooth abscess online. AS you conclude the story, you noticed that the toothache as been soothed somewhat but have learned from your mistakes and will try to see a dentist first thing tomorrow.
i am a 26 year old woman, and i already have 2 rotten teeth… i am in so much pain right now, and im in a house full of pain pills… and no one seems to give a shit… i feel like i could die from this pain…. i cant take asprin, im on blood thinners… any suggestions??

I know what teeth it is but now it feels like all of them hurt.I wanted a root canal but at this point they can have all the teeth. What home remedy work? DO Peroxide work?
help
What does this sound like to you? Is it a wisdom tooth coming in perhaps? (I’m almost 34 and have never had trouble with them before). The other day my jaw was bothering me. Nothing painful, but annoying. Like a “restlessness” in your jaw. Sort of like a mild sinus infection. I could still eat with no problems though.
But two days later I am in PAIN! My very back tooth hurts. If I accidentally bite down on it, I wish I were dead. It’s really sore. This tooth already has a filling, too, so I don’t think it’s a cavity. (I’m not sure cavity pain could form this quickly anyway). I don’t have dental insurance, so I’d rather not go in to the dentist unless absolutely necessary. So far no meds are working at all. I’ve even taken sinus medicine, thinking perhaps it was a sinus infection. Of course, since my tooth now hurts I know sinuses aren’t the problem.
Ok. I understand that some of you have no insurance, I have been there and know what its like. I had to have a root canal with no insurance, you wanna talk expensive, but the dentist let me make payments of 18 dollars a month. Thats pretty dang cheap. Anyways, even if there isn’t a cavity there could be an abscess. By the time you actually start feeling pain from an abscess it has already been abscessed for 6 months at least. Most people don’t realize that when you have an abscess in your mouth it can eventually get into your blood system and travel to other parts of the body. The abscess is made up of an acid that eats away things. You have to go to the dentist and have it taken care of. There was a little boy that was in the news not long ago that had an abscessed tooth, the parent didn’t take the child to the dentist for who knows what reason, and the child died because the abscess moved to the little boys brain. It is not safe to avoid going to the dentist if there is that much pain. It causes so many other problems to the rest of your body, its not just your tooth or your gums, it travels. So no matter if you have insurance or not you need to go to the dentist, because it can cause further problems, and possibly even death. So please see someone, if you dont have the money talk to the dentist and make some kind of payment arrangement.
Help! An older crown broke and had to be replaced, 2nd molar from the last on the upper left jaw. I went to the dentist to have the broken crown removed, and had no pain at the time. I was shot with anesthetic 3 times, by the hygienist not the dentist, and the last shot hurt really bad, worse than I had ever felt when getting those shots. She warned me on the 3rd one that I would feel lots of pressure. Well, I did and it hurt really bad, and after she was done the left half of the roof of my mouth just above the teeth swelled up and felt funny when I ran my tongue against it. So, I assumed this was normal, and the dentist removed my old crown, after I was good and numb, and prepped the area. I was thenr fitted with the temp crown and sent home, only to be in pain after the anesthetic wore off. I called them and went back same day and they made some more adjustments to the temp crown, in case the bite was off. I felt okay the next day, but then as days went on, I had more and more pain in the nerve area of the tooth, that radiated around my jaw and cheek, and also I had sensitivity to hot and cold drinks, which hurt more if the liquid hit the tooth area. About on the 5th day, I woke up with a sore throat on the left side of my mouth, so I looked inside and saw that it was still red around the area where the shots were administered, with a lighter patch of skin in the middle of the redness, and also it looked more red around my left side of my throat around the tonsil area, than the other side of my mouth. I now am taking ibuprofin consantly and can’t get rid of the pain. I have a dentist appointment tomorrow for them to check it out, but what could possibly have gone wrong? Did I have an adverse reaction to the shot or did it hit bone or nerves? If so, will this go away? I don’t want to have a root canal, since my root was fine before this particular dentist visit. I’m also on Zithromycin which I just started in case there is an infection, but I didn’t have a problem, other than a broken crown, before I went to the dentist office. Should the antibiotics help if there really is an infection? Please advise!! Thank you very much.
Monica-
I hope I can answer some of your questions. Sounds like they really had to numb you up, althought I see no reason why they had to numb the roof of your mouth (called a greater palatine injection – really painful, and I only use it for extractions), but you can have a lot of post operative sensitivity from an injection at that site. As far as your broken crown is concerned, it depends if there was decay on the tooth. Any time you work on a tooth, it receives trauma, and sometimes is enough to “push the tooth over the edge” where the nerve inside of the tooth can’t take the trauma. There will always be some mild temperature sensitivity with a temporary crown (uses an acrylic material, and a water soluable temporary cement), but if your tooth is giving you constant unprovoked pain, wakes you up at night, etc. you probably need a root canal. You should have your dentist refer you to an endodontist (root canal specialist) to evaluate
Kristin-
I rarely see patients who have wisdom tooth pain who are in their mid 30’s (unless the tooth has errupted into the mouth and has a giant cavity). People with sinus issues tend to have cold and biting sensitivity on all of their upper back teeth. Jaw problems are usually related to nocturnal bruxism (grinding your teeth at night), and can cause a lot of general pain to your teeth, and tenderness to your TMJ (jaw joint). Your best bet is to make an appointment with your dentist to rule out tooth decay. Sometimes older/deeper fillings can also cause the nerve inside of your tooth to go south in which case you will be looking at either a root canal or extraction. If it’s related to grinding, I would recommend a nightguard. You can have a custom fit one (made by your dentist), or a cheaper alternative is an “over the counter” type which you can find in the dental isle at your local drug store.
Stephanie-
If your tooth spontaneously gives you pain in the middle of the night, that is unprovoked pain, which translates into a nerve issue inside of your tooth. Did you or your dentist place the temporary filling, and any reason why it was left there for 6 months? It is not a good idea to take antibiotics for more than a week, and pain medicine isn’t good to take long term either (you are correct – too much for your liver to handle). I laugh when people ask me about peroxide rinses. They are harmful for your gums, and don’t offer much in terms of taking care of tooth pain. Your best bet is to return to your dentist for a follow up visit to check out your tooth.
Amber-
Stay away from aspirin. If you are taking blood thinners (such as coumadin – most popular one on the market), taking aspirin in conjunction with blood thinners is will further thin your blood (alter your INR, PT, PTT – I’m sure you’re aware of these terms being on a blood thinner). Tylenol is your best bet in terms of pain relief as it doesn’t interfere with blood thinners, but if you have “rotten teeth”, you should go see a dentist for an evaluation (to determine if your teeth are restorable or need to be extracted). If you need an extraction, you will also need to contact your physician to get medical clearance (to avoid any post operative bleeding complications) before an extraction.
im here at work reading all yall stories and i had a root canal about 9 years ago and now that tooth has just started hurting and high doses of vicodin and methadone are no help at all and the bad part is that i just signed up for my insurance at work and there is no telling how that will take to go into effect so im about to get off and go dose my self up with narcotics and try to sleep it off
Among the most effective home remedies for toothache is garlic. A clove of garlic with a little rock salt should be placed on the affected tooth. It will relieve the pain and, sometimes, may even cure it. A clove should also be chewed daily in the morning. It will make the cure teeth making it strong and healthy.
This is a great site and it really has made me feel better to read everyone’s stories. My dental problems have been a long and painful road that started with a dentist prescriving me fluoride pills as a kid. The dose was way too high and my permanent teeth came in stained from fluorosis, which leaves brown stains that look like decay. Lots of dentists mistake it for that and I even had one ask me if I “sucked lemons.” Lovely! I’ve been through braces, bonding, too many fillings to count, a root canal, 4 wisdom teeth removed and 5 porcelain crowns, 4 for cosmetic reasons due to the fluorosis. All at the ripe old age of 30.
Right now I’m dealing with a dental HMO from hell that drills without numbing shots, doesn’t like giving pain pills and doesn’t seem to know what they are doing in terms of treatment. I am going to switch to a PPO and a better dentist as soon as my plan allows me (this summer) but in the meantime I have no choice but to deal with them because of a cracked tooth. Despite having a root canal and no infection, they are hesistant to put a crown on the tooth because it was still sore 2 days after the root canal. They put me on antibiotics “just in case.” I made them give me a temporary crown to protect it (which hurt like crazy because they drilled without anesthetic), and I’m waiting to go back in 2 weeks for another evaluation. The temporary crown was not fitted correctly and so I can’t chew properly but I am unable to get an appointment before my scheduled one. I hate dental HMOs!
Dental pain is the worst and I usually have to try several things (cold water rinses, pain pills, Orajel) at once in order to get any kind of relief. My mouth has been hurting for about 2 months straight now due to the cracked tooth and the slow work of the dental HMO. Despite all of my anguish, I do brush my teeth and floss several times a day. My boyfriend rarely does either and has never had a cavity. Go figure!
I was told last month that I had to have a root canal re-done on my molar #19. I wasn’t experiencing any pain in that tooth whatsoever. I went to get the root canal redone (for 270 bucks i might add)on Thursday 3/20. I sat in the chair for two hours while the endodontist worked. After my visit i was really numb so no pain. Friday (the next day) I had discomfort, but no pain. Saturday was the same..then Sunday came. HOLY MOLEY I have never been in so much pain in my life. I was insane with pain, crying, praying to god that this pain goes away. It is the worst pain I have ever felt in my entire life. Monday I was even worse. I went to work, called the endo and she said it was normal. NORMAL? I am dying and she says its normal. She prescribed vicodin for the pain. The vicodin made me throw up so I cant take it. So Monday night I tried every “remedy” I could think of… Vodka on the gum, vanila extract, salt water rinse, peroxide rinse. I thought this pain would never go away and i hadn’t gotten any sleep for 2 days… It’s now Thursday (exactly one week after my visit) the pain has died down significantly but i still feel very sore. So I know what you guys are going through… A tooth ache is the worst pain ever!
i have had this toothache for about 1 month now, and i couldn’t sleep coundint do anything, then all of a sudden it was gone, then about 2 weeks later back it is again… went to the dentist to find out a left a cavity get so bad that a root canel wont help and they need to pull my tooth, so tomrowo i go get it pulled.. anyways if your in pain here is what i did and it helped 10000%
you will need the following:
Orajel Liquid – extra strength – usually 5.99$
Orajel Paste – extra strength – usually 4.99$ – 5.99$
Advil – Strongest you can find – 10.99$ – 20.99$ depends on how strong
Tooth Brush and Toothpaste
Glass of luke warm water and salt
now, take 4 Advil and down them swith some water, then take the luke warm water and add a tablespoon of salt, rinse you mouth out, then brush those teeth, get then squeeky clean, especially around the cavity, then take the Orajel Liquid, and put it on a cotton swab or the things you clean your ears with, soak it in that, then wipe that in and on the cavity and around it, on your gums and sides of your mouth, then take the Orajel Paste, its like toothpaste, squeeze some right into the cavity, spread it around with your finger abit. This is what i did, and man, if you do this, you will thank me til you die, your mouth goes like totally numb from the Orajel and the Advil kills all throbbing pain, and you can’t feel nothing, this will last for around 4-5 hours, but if you feel the pain slowly coming back, squeeze some more Orajel Paste on the cavity and back to normal, i did this for a month straight and dam its addicting,
trust me, no no no, you don’t need to thank me, just do that and your pain is History
Now, remember to start brushing your teeth!!!!
Okay, heres the cause and treatment for toothaches (Im near death right now myself-have taken 5 30mg ROXICODONEs-thats like 20 vicodin without the tylenol-a few minutes ago but know that this will not last for too long, so I’ll get the advice out quickly). FIRST AND FOREMOST-the pain comes from bacteria getting into the tooth-this is caused by a bad tooth and chomping on some candy or something we probably shouldnt be eating (though not always). So even though it may take a day or two, CLEAN THE CRAP out of that tooth and swish with some serious mouthwash……….clean it really well-try to get that bacteria out of there………..then, no matter how much it KILLS you, GET TO THE DENTIST before you pull another stunt with a 3 musketeers, lol! (I should talk-have had 1/4 of a molar hanging on for dear life in this mountain-dew-rotted mouth of mine). Get some antibiotics and tell em to forget the Vicodin, cause that aint enough to deaden any pain!
Well, after all those pain pills and a half a botle of anbesol (I just swished half the bottle around in my mouth and spit it out) the pain is now down to a 3 on a 1-10 scale…….Im outta here!
GOOD LUCK GUYS!

Does anyone have a dental abcsess? What has worked for you? I started 800 mgs of Motrin yesterday, 875mgs 2times a day of AMoxicillin, and Oragel. It has been less than 24 hours and I am hoping that the antibiotic will start doing it’s job soon. Maybe I havent given it enough time to work????? It is 3 am , I cant sleep and my chin and gums are swollen due to the abscess. I have to wait about a week to see a dentist. ANy suggestions? ANyone else suffering from facial swelling duetoan abscess?
Hi to all with tooth pain.
I don’t know if this will help everyone, but my dental “insurance” save a lot of $$ and anyone can sign as long as your area (where you live) is approved. It’s goldenwestdental.com (smile choice plan) it’s not very expensive per month, and it is a discount plan that saves at least some $$.. My prayers are with everyone with such horrible pain. I have cried many times during these last 3 weeks due to pain. I will be getting 2 root canals soon.
I’ve been reading all the tragic tales and I just had to let you know about oil of oregano. A retired naturopath told me that it is effective for tooth infection and tooth ache. You need to get real oil of oregano and the expensive brand, North American Herb and Spice Company, seems to work best. It really does work. Put some drops of the oil on a very small cotton ball and place it next to the tooth. Repeat as often as necessary. The internet sources that I’ve read says not to use oil of oregano during pregnancy, but it could be tremendously helpful otherwise.
i have recently chipped my tooth eating a sandwhich from burger king.
it just started to hurt again and i have tried everything. ice, orajel, putting heat on it, mouth wash, brushing my teeth and nothing really seems to help.
but if someone can help me out with how i can get rid of my pain i would really like it.. thanks so much!!!
I wanted to let you know for next time, & hopefully there won’t be one there are places that you can make an appointment and go the next day,as an emergencies.

I have a chipped tooth and ear ache that alternates in pain waves….sometimes both are quiet..other times..its Hell is in session time…I am playing a dangerous game…hoping the root will dye, the tooth enamel fall apart..and all will be well, minus one tooth..
your thoughts..
Ok when it comes to the pains your having, the root isnt just going to die. You are going to have to go in to see a dentist and they are going to have to take care of that. More then likely you have an abscess and that is where the severe pain is coming from. Get to a dentist as soon as you possibly can. Good Luck
Speaking of tooth problems… I forgot to put this in my last post. About a year ago when I got my insurance through work I went to see a dentist that was in my network. I was having pain and alot of problems with tooth 29. She said it was an abscess and that she could save the tooth by doing a root canal. I told her to go ahead and do the root canal, I only had to pay 180 for the root canal because my insurance is pretty dang good. So anyway she did the root canal, got everything taken care of. She was very rough with me, I was in a lot of pain while she was doing it believing that was normal, and for about 3 days afterwards because apparently she did not file it down like she was suppose to. Well the next time I went in to the facility, this building has multiple practices inside, including several other dentists, I had to see another dentist. When I asked why the receptionist informed me that my dentist was no longer with the office. So I saw this new woman, lets call her Rose. Rose is so awesome, no pain not having anymore problems, shes funny and she finds a way to make sure everything goes as easy as it can for me. Any way, about 3 weeks ago I felt a pocket around tooth 29 so I called Roses receptionist and set something up for the following Monday because I had a feeling that it was abscessed. I told her I was not having any pain but that it was swollen and a little hard. So Monday came, 11:30 and I roll into the office right on time for my appointment. Pam, Roses assistant, comes out and gets me from the waiting room, preps me and gets Rose. They take x-rays and determine that the it is indeed an abscess and they will have to drain it. Well upon further inspection of the x-ray Rose says that the root canal was done improperly and that we need to redo it. Im thinking great another 180 bucks out the window. They inform me being that the other dentist messed up that they were not going to charge me for this next one…good thing. Rose numbs me up and goes to work taking out the other filling, once she gets the filling out and starts looking she tells me that the tooth can not be saved because of the extensive damage to the tooth. She informs me that the previous dentist did not remove all the decay and that the tooth has ate away from the inside out, theres no way to save it. I am so mad at this point because I wasted the money for some person that claimed to know what she was doing to work on my tooth and she messed it up and now I wont even have the tooth. All that pain and suffering for nothing, not being able to eat or even talk right for 4 days for nothing. They leave after removing the tooth and talk to the office manager about the situation. Rose and Pam return telling me that they have credited my account for the amount paid on the root canal and that they were going to get a bridge in place because it was a tooth closer to the front. So I ask how much a bridge is going to cost me out of pocket, they said about 200 bucks to cover the crown that is needed on one of the other teeth for the bridge. So on top of covering for the removal, draining, medication(oral antibiotic rinse), office visit, and reimbursement, they are going to pretty much cover everything but 200 bucks for my bridge, all because the other dentist messed up so bad. So Tuesday I came back into the office, still swollen from the extraction and the trauma to the area, the fit me for a temporary bridge and put that on and set me up for the 20th of this month to put the permanent bridge in. So to say the least its been an interesting few weeks. All because some stupid dentist didn’t preform her job right!! Apparently I wasn’t the only one either, Rose has had to do a lot of things for the patients of the previous dentist, thats why she is no longer there. I just hope that everyone here finds a dentist like Rose, she is a blessing!!! Good luck all! Anyone around the Panhandle of WV that needs to find a dentist let me know and I can give you the number to the office.

I have what appears to be atleast two abscessed teeth. I haven’t seen a dentist in years. I’m horrified because i can’t pay any big bill and the pain is constant since noon when I bit down on one of the areas. I tried 2 tylenol PM extra strength and not much impact. I need to gnumb the pain i cant stand it any longer. I tried to get a dental appointment but they cant see me till tuesday because of memorial weekend. I’m seriously considering going to the liquor store tomorrow.
