Everything I Do, I do It For You

Think back to what you were doing 16 years ago in 1991. Can’t remember? Surely you haven’t forgotten “Everything I Do, I do It For You” by Bryan Adam from the Robin Hood soundtrack already? It was number 1 in many countries all over the world for several weeks. It was played off the air in Ireland where it stayed in the number 1 position for 9 weeks if I recall correctly.

How do I know this? I know it was 1991 because a music channel played this song last night, and I remember it because I was working in a bookshop for a few weeks at the end of August that year. We used to have the radio on, and Larry Gogan’s “Number 1 at 1” slot played this song every single day. Thankfully my hatred for “Everything I Do” has been dulled with time, but the memory of sorting through Leaving Cert exam papers in a dusty attic accompanied by the rough voice of Mr Bryan Adam will never leave me ..

  1. Primary school in Kilkenny, likely 2nd or 3rd class. Someone had come back from holiday with a pirate copy of the video and we all got to watch it in class.

Jesus, that seems like a lifetime ago.

  2. I love this song and quite enjoyed the movie.

Bryan Adams is incredibly talented. I didn’t know till just now reading Wikipedia that he is also an accomplished photographer.

I’m happy to know that his parents choose my island for their home 😉

  3. Strangely enough I never got around to watching the movie. I think I was pretty broke at the time it came out and never got around to watching it later on!

  4. Oh god. Thanks Donncha,

I have it in my head now and I really hated it when it came out. That hatred hasn’t left either!

Hmm.. 1991. I was 15 and just after joining the FCA after lying about my age. Spent a week with them in Bere Island and I used the money that I earned to buy my first CD player!

I’m still in the FCA, or the RDF as it is known now. 16 years. Wow. I’m getting old!
