Dana Elcar, 'MacGyver' actor dies at 77

Dana Elcar, MacGyver’s boss in the hit series died on Monday at the age of 77. I can only presume there are very few people from 25 and up who never saw MacGyver. It was certainly a favourite of my brothers and I! What that guy could do with a pen knife and duct tape.
Dana Elcar was the balding boss, Pete, who sent MacGyver on his missions. Remember he went blind towards the end of the series? That’s because in real life he suffered from glaucoma, and he lost his sight.
Thanks for all the good times Dana!

The Paparazzi – their story

The News from the Dark Side by Peter Howe – what drives the paparazzi to such lengths to capture grainy pictures of celebrities?
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are only the latest celebs to have their privacy wiped away.
Check out the paparazzi gallery too. Lots of juicy shots of your favourites!
That reminds me, I must post some shots of Kirsti Alley who signed copies of her new book at Borders in Chicago a few weeks ago. She’s looking well!

WPMU – Using WordPress Themes

I’m exploring what changes are required so that WPMU can use WordPress themes. Currently, WPMU uses Smarty templates but there’s an order of magnitude more WordPress themes out there so it’d be great if we could use those too. The WP theme engine has become a very flexible and sophisticated templating engine over the past year. Version 1.6 of WordPress will have easy tags, so template authors don’t even have to know PHP to create their templates!
In brief, WPMU can use WordPress themes with little modification, although only read-only. If you want to edit the theme then the theme files have to copied into seperate blog theme folders. The pieces are falling into place and hopefully I can make it an option so that Smarty and WP themes can be mixed on the one host!

The Case Against Coldplay

The New York Times reports on Coldplay’s favourite subject: moaning! Jon – I don’t admire them either, I bought their first album and only listened to it once. *yawn*

Later.. More on the Coldplay Backlash! I have mixed feelings about them being beaten to the UK No. 1 spot by the Crazy Frog, I can’t imagine a more annoying song than that tune. Thankfully I don’t have to take public transport too often and I’ve been insulated from the worst of teenager’s ringtones.

Corpus Christi on Pana

Here’s a panoramic photo I assembled from 2 shots at the Corpus Christi Procession on Sunday. I created the photo with the help of Panoramic Stitch which I mentioned a few days ago. It did a very good job, especially when you consider the foreground. I can’t imagine what kind of manipulation I would have had to go through to get those lines to match up! Using this GIMP plugin was simple – select a few control points, it figures out how close the points are on each image and then you generate the stitch!
I did try to stitch a 3rd photo to the left of this one, but the distortion became too great and artefacts were very evident. I hope the author is encouraged to continue working on this project as he has come a long way already!
PS. Pana is Cork slang for “St. Patrick’s Street”, the main street running through Cork City.
