Black holes mangle Information!

I caught the end of Stephen Hawking’s presentation on TV3 tonight. While the discovery he made broadens the knowledge we have about space and the universe what caught my eye was the sight of the father of a guy I knew years ago in school in the front row! Hey Niall! How’s your dad? 🙂
Later … Here’s a page about the event. It cost €90 to get in to the conference! Ouch.

Midland, Texas – Home to George W. Bush and family

Last week The Times magazine ran an article on the town of Midland, Texas. It’s where George W. Bush and his wife live, or I suppose will live after the elections next Autumn. Not sure I want to go visit however.
A lot of people there seem to be quite zealous about religion. They’re waiting for the Rapture to come. When asked what the Rapture was, “there is reluctance among the most seriously committed to spell it out.” But at a local cemetary,

“Well, there’s Laura Bush’s father buried over there,” she says, pointing blithely past tasteful and titanic statuary. “Suppose the President and his wife were to come here this afternoon and the Rapture happens. There’d be bodyguards and press people and stuff. Most of them would be left behind, especially the press people.” She speaks through barely parted lips. “But where the Bushes had been there’d just be piles of clothes on the ground and that pin he wears. They’d be gone – into the air. That’s what we believe.”

Hmm, I’d hate to see Bertie Ahern running around naked without his clothes because I can’t imagine he’d disappear in the Rapture! 😉
In related news, the Sunday Times published an extract from John Edwards’ biography last week. The account of losing his son was heart-breaking and although I don’t agree completely (who sees eye to eye with any politician?) I wish the Democratic Party luck in the coming election.

Any Shed Will Do!

John posted this email
to earlier today. It’s a great read and an eye opener if you’re on any email mailing list! If only people would consider some of the points made here we’d have a better experience in email communities! Just because you have an opinion doesn’t mean that you should post it.
Chances are, someone else has already expressed the same opinion! Especially if it’s not a complicated matter. Never mind emotive subjects, they’re just asking for trouble!

Playing Catchup on Photography Links

As usual, Mark’s been busy. He linked to a number of articles I didn’t see until this afternoon for obvious reasons! Oh, expect a few photos from Gugan Barra over the next few days. Got some great snaps out there yesterday!

  • PhotoPermit – I talked about this before, what rights have you got on the street? How does taking photos of people make you feel? Have you been accosted and confronted by an angry passer-by for taking their photo? They want to hear your war stories here!
  • Digital Sports Photography Tips – good compilation of links!
  • teleconverters, Are they useful? – lengthy article, look at the images if you’re in a hurry. Good comparisions between zooming and cropping in Photoshop vs the TC.
  • Vivid Light #37 is out! Goody!
  • Timecatcher.com – stunning photos!
