Today's Bike Run

I was in town this afternoon shopping and as I queued at the ATM in Paul St. I heard an almighty roar from Patrick St. As soon as I got my money I rushed down to be confronted with a large group of bikes making their way down the main thoroughfare of the city!

As a side-note, this is the first time I tried the “shoot and pan” trick with my camera. I set the exposure time to 1/30 second and as the bikes went past I panned the camera as I took the shot. Most of the time it didn’t work too well, but the picture of Santa above came out well IMO!

Linux demoscene stuff

Great! I didn’t know about lnxscene.org at all! They’ve lots of demo related news up there, and links to Linux demos. hmm. Must download!
Update! – of course, if you’re using an Nvidia graphics card you really should go to their site for their closed source drivers, or if you use Fedora Linux you should have a look here for rpms!
Go look for “Paper Rose of Texas” by Fit. Good 64k demo!

Make Irish an official EU language

At first when John pointed me at this report, I thought, “I speak Irish, but how many of my friends do? How many times do people really do business as Gaeilge?”
That’s not the point however. Many Irish people are willing to let our language die but with it will go a rich heritage (and I’m talking of more than Peig!) and culture.
There’s a new generation growing up who’ve gone through the Gael Scoileanna and have a sound understanding of the Irish language. It’s a slow process but schooling is much better these days, and hopefully today’s parents will get over the mental block that old style Irish teaching brought with it.
Conradh Na Gaeilge have almost the same text on their homepage. It’s not likely to stay there indefinetly so use the above link if you’re reading this a year from now!

photoSIG Photos

2 amazing photos on Photosig this morning:

  1. football fan2 – this is such a powerful image it jumped out at me from the page.
  2. The Weather Project – excellently composed photo. The running child captured within the reflection of the sun makes this a lot more interesting as her action contrasts with the idle non-motion of the adults at the far end of the photo.

Happy Birthday Louise!

Happy birthday Louise! hehe. Told ya I’d blog this!
Upstairs in Cubins is pretty mad! Wondering now.. when was the last time I was out this late on a Tuesday night? Too long! Just please, don’t throw anything difficult at me tomorrow!

On a more serious note, Ivan Noble was on The Last Word talking about his fight against a malignant brain tumour. He’s gone through a lot and he’s documenting his experiences online. He has links to previous posts up there too making it easy to read back on his progress.
I hope that tumour stays in remission for as long as possible Ivan!

Run iPod! Run!

The Rio Karma looks like an impressive personal music player! This lengthy review goes into quite a lot of detail, including the suggestion that, “it bests the iRiver and the iPod [on sound quality], but is about on par with the Zen” which is high praise indeed!
I like the fact that they included an ethernet port too. Simply plug the device into your network and you’ve got a ready made mp3 server with all your favourite music available through your nice expensive computer sound system!
Hmm, pity I can’t afford either it or an iPod.
