Some Thoughts:
- When you have a tooth ache everything else takes second place.
- Oh, and the tooth ache always happens on a bank holiday weekend, to ensure maximum pain, and remind you to go to the bloody dentist more often!
- Vodka, rubbed onto the infected gum/teeth is a god-send for pain relief. It lasts almost 3 hours and it’ll let you get some measure of rest at night.
- Have an understanding partner who’ll take care of you and fuss over you.
- Brush, floss and see your dentist more often.
- Brush, floss and see your dentist more often.
- Brush, floss and see your dentist more often.
- Brush, floss and see your dentist more often.
I’ll probably have to get a root-canal next week, the tooth is dead so hopefully it won’t be too sore. (I’m not too hopeful though..)

DAMN IT! IT’S MY TURN AND IT JUST ALWAYS BLOODY HURTS SO BAD JUST BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP. 2AM AND I CAN’T GET TO SLEEP.
But thank god I found this site! It’s a consolation to learn that I’m not the only one going throught this mess of shit!
SOMEBODY HELP ME!
I went to the hospital because i could not deal with the pain. The Dr. had given me antibiotic and tylenol #3 they didn’t work at first but now 3 days later the antibiotics are starting to work there is less pain. They told me never to let it go untreated because once you get swollen glands in your neck it can spredd fast to your chest and end up in ICU.
I’m in so much pain because of this damn tooth in the back. I went to the dentist and he told me I would have to get a root canal but I have to wait til November! Ha like the hell I can wait that long I’ll shoot myself first. I’ve already missed one day of work and I’m going to have to miss more, the pain is nothing I’ve evre felt. Atasol 30 doesn’t do shit, Ibuprofen works a bit, I’ve tried using whiskey and vodka but that works for like a couple of minutes and ambesol isnt working either. Does anyone know if I went to the ER would they give me anything? I can’t get into a dentist for another two days and I can’t take it anymore I’m asking them to rip out the tooth I do not want it anymore. I wouldnt wish this pain on my worst enemy.
OMG k I’ve had bad teeth! One because i’ve had 4 children and rumor has it that the unborn child pulls all your calcium from your teeth .Second because ive failed to take care of the problems when they where small… I’ve had most my teeth worked on but one tooth! I need a root canal done. ( I don’t have 1200 bucks) so this pain is totally different then all the others.. My Tooth will give off this dull pain and then my Gums feel like UGHH then it travels to my ear and OMGG Down my jaw line into my NECK! Whats up with that.. Totally freaking me out! Its on my left side. The pain is soo bad i wouldn’t be surprised if i ended up having a heart attack! Ive tried everything and nothing is working 🙁 Oral Pain relievers (perocets) and oragel.
Id rather give birth 100 more times with out pain meds! Then having this pain.. Ick if dentist didn’t charge like outrageous amounts! Cries!!!!!!!!
A good suggestion for temporary relief is to smoke a joint and hopefully fall asleep before the pain comes back!
I go with him.
I’m glad I don’t have any firearms in the house or my brains would be splattered all over the wall. Gonna head out and buy some vodka for the pain, gonna look like an alcoholic in DT’s in the store lol, hurts soooo bad.
My toothache started right after I got my teeth cleaned last week. It started to hurt me friday evening, so I called the dentist and she prescribed me some antibiotics which didn’t work and some pain pills that made me SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So I had to got friday night pain, all day Saturday pain, and I feel a little better today, Tomorrow I am calling the dentist early in the morning. I have to hurry and get this thing out it is driving me insane!
Toothache from hell started two days before vacation. I drove 1000 miles with it… cant get into the dentist before i get home. 1000 more miles and 8 days. Ouch! Considering the vodka, and i dont drink!!
If you have a hole where the filling fell out and it’s infected from food laying in it for a few months, just buy some whole cloves in the spice section at walmart (open 24 hours) and stick a piece of it in the hole after wetting it with your saliva, bite down on it and leave it there…I did it and it kept my tooth numb for 3 days straight until I could get to the dentist to have it pulled.
If the salt works too I would dump a little pile of it in a cup and put a few drops of water in it to make it into a thin paste and use a Q-tip to apply it directly to the area so recieves a concetrated dose of salt and let it sit on it a few minutes before rinsing it out. That might work better than squishing around an extremely diluted solution.
This is a fascinating thread!!
My own experience with teeth is that the more treatment I have, the more pain I get! Weird, but true.
I had no dental treatment whatsoever until my 20s as my parents were not keen on dentists. I had very little decay as I have strong well-cleaned teeth.
That was the start of all my problems, vast caverns dug into my teeth to fix tiny spots of decay, large areas of the tooth destroyed to get the fillings to ‘stick’. I often wonder if I had had nothing done if my teeth would have survived much longer?
Long breaks in dental treatment since because I could only get private dentists in the UK and invariably they went looking for something to do. I still have a perfectly fine tooth which I was told 20 years ago needed a root canal and cap……it still has the same small filling, no problems at all.
The worst pain of my life came with an abscess 6 months ago – which came on about a footnight after a filling. The dentist had not removed all the decay. So it all had to come out and it was filled again……which came out recently along with most of the tooth so now it will have to be removed.
I have a feeling that teeth look after themselves if they are left alone and that much of the dentistry which we undergo simply compromises that.
I think that dentistry is evolving and clearly new materials for fillings reduce the amount of tooth which has to be destroyed but to my mind to remove a tiny piece of black decay to replace it with a huge chunk of black filling is neither attractive, nor very sensible! Cos next time the filling will need to be even bigger, etc., etc.
So, while I go for my 6 monthly check ups (have found another NHS dentist so the ‘unnecessary’ treatment suggestions have eased off) I don’t have a great deal of faith in dentists I’m afraid.
I’m so sorry to all of you who are suffering because of bad luck, bad dentistry, prohibitive costs.
There is something seriously seriously wrong with all of this. It is as if we are still living in the Dark Ages.
I hope you all feel better soon.
Susan
Wow – this sounds so corny but reading all of your stories makes me feel like I’m surrounded by friends (see, I told you it would sound goofy). Of course, this could just be the massive amount of pain pills coursing through my body talking :-).
Just had a root canal last week, and now need another one. Antibiotics, pain pills, etc. etc. have done nothing for this pain. The pain meds make me tired, but right now I’m trying to decide on the best way to cut my head off. The pain of a decapitation attempt just might be enough to distract me from this freaking tooth pain. MAYBE.
You all have my sympathy and empathy……think I’ll go try the Listerine……….good luck to all!!!!!!
I finally had my root canal done last Tuesday! Finally the pain was gone! What a relief!! Thursday came around and i started feeling these bumps on the roof of my mouth! They got worse and worse! I went back to the dentist Monday! Come to find out i have an INFECTED root canal! OMGOSH! WTH! My dentist said i have ulcers?? these ulcers are the size of the top of a pencil. They are in clusters. OMGOSH they hurt sooo bad! So much for going to get my dental work taken care of and I’m still in pain and still cant eat. I tried to eat ice cream last night thinking it would freeze my mouth but NO only made it worse! Grrrr!!! Ive lost a good 10 pounds because i haven’t been able to eat sh**t in the past 2-3 weeks! This worked better then The Jenny Creg Diet ..LOL
Do you know what really annoys me?
Well i’ll tell you, all these people i know that eat all this crap, drink fizzy drinks all the time, they never go to the dentist and more importantly NEVER CLEAN THEIR TEETH and it turns out they have never had toothache and needed a filling. I DESPISE THEM!
So i guess you either are lucky and get strong teeth or are unlucky like us who are stuck with weak teeth.
Like all of you i am in agony. I am completely overdosed on pain killers which is dangerous but i’m thinking death is not necessarily the worst scenerio.
People who have never had toothache will never understand, “it’s only toothache” WHAT THE HELL!
When the hell will this amoxycillen kick in? Two days the dentist said and i am still waiting. Meant to catch a flight to Italy in two days, i have no idea if this is going to be possible now, anyone know what the healthcare is like there?
I want to meet God
ps.
i think vodka on the tooth and gum is the greatest pain reliever yet. Even so, still dark times!
when i was 10 yes old, my mother took me to a dentist who drilled and filled every tooth in my mouth except my front 6 teeth on top and bottom. while i lay in his chair, his nurse held my hands down tight in my lap while the tears rolled down my face and into my ears. my mother was a whack-o who wanted to date the evil dentist. (my father was dead) she never even looked into my mouth…i had NO cavities. he was just making money off my mother.
now, im 40 years old and every single tooth he touched is falling apart like clock-work. it started in my 30’s. believe me when i say that I KNOW TOOTH PAIN! right now, i am in the midst of a 3 day marathon. ive had no sleep because the only relief i get is to take mouth-fulls of ice cold water and let it sit on the tooth until it goes warm. i spit it out and in less than 2 minutes, i must repeat. i sent my son to wal mart tonight to get me 2 teething rings for babies. they are in the freezer as i type. my plan is to put the frozen ring in my mouth and try to sleep…when it thaws, i will replace it with the other. ive tried gargeling with salt and baking soda. it hit my tooth and the pain was so intense that i started to black out. i have tried swishing half-frozen vodka and it only hurts like hell!
i have been on pennicillian for 2 days…its not done a thing for me. i went to the emergency room this afternoon, begging and crying for help. lortab and antibiotics is all they will do….they say…”go see a dentist.”
i have thought about suicide at least every hour for 3 days.
i simply cannot take this pain any more…
im woozy from not eating and the pain.
i have lost weight.
i cant smoke a cigarette which helped to keep my sanity.
i looked up the old dentist who did this to me and rang his phone….he has caller ID and wouldnt accept my call. im sure he doesnt know or remember me…but maybe a knock on his door will refresh is elderly, sadistic memory.
God…help us all.
waah! my tooth hurst so bad!
i wan’t to die
the dentist told me, that maybe my wisdom tooth is growing
thats why
i hate wisdom tooth!
Please, please please LISTEN TO ME!!! i have been through horrible, un-speakable tooth pain. I know what if feels like to want to shoot youre self in the head to STOP THE PAIN!!
THE ONLY CURE is to TAKE YOURSELF TO THE DENTIST!! if youre reading this after dentist hours, get through it the best way you can…try any and all of the cures…but when the sun comes up tomorrow…open the yellow pages in the phone book and select a dentist that takes emergency walk-ins..BEG…BORROW OR STEAL THE MONEY!!! its THE ONLY WAY!!
stop putting yourself thru this misery and get it fixed, you will wish you had done it sooner.
if you (like me) have a severe phobia of the dentist…GO ANYWAY!!!
im writing to you after the absolute WORST past 48 hours of my entire life. NO sleep, crying, starving, worrying, just MISERY. i went today and got the culprit tooth yanked. I AM FREE! painkillers and antibiotics are doing their job and im wishing i went SOONER! i put myself thru UNNECESSARY pain cuz i was afraid. im am now relieved. YOU CAN BE FREE OF THE PAIN AS WELL!
PLEASE!!! GO TO A DENTIST!!!
peace…and remember…
sometimes the very last thing you want to do is the first thing you should have done all along!!!!!!!!
Well I had the rest of my top teeth extracted on June 13th, and the rest of my bottom teeth extracted on August 1st because of toothaches (I had 13 teeth pulled out this summer all because of toothaches). I am completly toothless now!
Well now I don’t know if I have some other kind of medical condition that caused the “toothache pain” because I am still in horrible pain right now, after having those teeth pulled out (it still feels like it did BEFORE I had the teeth pulled).
When I went to the oral surgeon on August 1st, he told me, (before he extracted the remaining bottom teeth), that from the x-ray, that there is some roots still left in my gum, from a previous tooth that was extracted (not by him, but by a different oral surgeon).
Well he told me that he was going to take it out, well I don’t think that he did, because he would of had to of drilled a hole in my gum in order to get the root out, and when I looked, there wasn’t any kind of hole, where the area, where he says that the root is at. I am planning on going to my regular dentist here soon to get a full mouth x-ray to find out why I’m still in alot of pain, after this long of time, after having the extractions.
I have been in chronic tooth/mouth pain since the 1st of December and I am getting really depressed.
Here I thought that by having all of my teeth extracted, then the pain would be all gone, man was I wrong. 🙁
Kim
Screw the listerine to cure the pain! Aren’t you retarded women (stephanie) reading what we are saying in here? The pain is coming from infection. Infection is caused from bacteria. Salt kills bacteria instantly! That’s why people salt meat to preserve it. Put some god damned salt on your toothache in a concentrated dose and if you get it in there where the infection is it will make the pain go away. Just shut up and do it!
Anyone who says tooth pain isnt worse than ripping your own intestines out is clueless.
Ive tried vodka, minor relief, 2-5 minutes.
Pure salt in the filling hole gave me 5 minutes.
Holding my breath and tensening my body, primarily head, as hard as I can, for 5 seconds, gives me 10 seconds.
I even tried putting a piece of a sugar free gum in hot water for 10 minutes, and then filling my filling with it, it only made it worse.
Aaaaaargh, I feel for every and each one of you.
Hah, I have to post here as well after reading some of these.
I’ve got an abscessed wisdom tooth at the moment, that besides hurting like crazy itself, my left ear and sometimes my neck are in sharp pain from it too. Pain is pain, but with it being my jaw and ear hurting, it really messes with concentration.
Vodka didn’t help much by putting it on the tooth, but let me get a couple of miserable hours of sleep after drinking enough of it.
Tylonol and ibprofun have done nothing, though I keep taking them (in the recommended doses and without mixing with alcohol).. pretty much worthless.
Anbesol is the best thing I’ve tried so far, it’s not perfect, but it does help. Also, I’d recommend some tylonol PM, only because it might be that little push that makes your exhaustion overweigh the pain and you’ll fall asleep simply because your body shuts down.
Wheeee!
Holy cow, I can’t believe there are so many people suffering with toothaches. It sounds like the pain is right up there with giving birth!
I have an abcess tooth. The pain is worse than the 2 children I gave birth to. I had 2 C-Sections. I was cut from hip to hip and went home with NO PAIN KILLERS at all. That was NOTHING compared to the pain I have now.
Its got to the place where I have to put ICE COLD water directly on the tooth. Ive been doing this for over 48 hours. I have to carry a cup of ice water and a cup to spit it into. If I go for 5 seconds without the ice…there are no words for the intensity of the pain. It would be similar to holding your hand over an open flame, then dousing the fire with water. There is no sleep to be had cuz the very moment the ice melts, the pain begins to increase until I do believe i will go totally insane. If I had no ice..I would surely kill myself. I have tried all the remedies. I made a paste of salt and baking soda. I put it in my mouth, swished it over the bad tooth and almost passed out from the pain. Vodka does nothing. I even froze some vodka and let it lay on the tooth. The very second it thawed out, even a little, the pain was through the roof! Gargleing with Listerine and salt water does nothing. OraGel and Ambesol are a JOKE…the dont even come close to touching the pain I have. Ive massaged my jaw…trying to break the abcess…Ive tried standing in the shower with hot water running on my cheek…doesnt work. I have to take ICE water INTO THE SHOWER with me! I am unfit to live with…cant hold a conversation, cant talk, cant eat, cant sleep, CANT STAND THIS PAIN! I am seriously going to KILL MYSELF if this doesnt STOP! Somebody told me that they knew someone who actually took a gun and shot the bad tooth out through their cheek to stop the pain. I looked for ways to pull it myself…cant find any instructions. I have a dentist appt in 3 days. THREE MORE DAYS!?!? Ive been on penacillian for 2 days already. It did not help at all.
The only advice I can offer would be to get yourself to a dentist asap. Beg your mom for the money….beg anyone! I would mortgage my home for a shot of novacaine right now so that I could get an hours sleep! Id give absolutely anything I have to stop this pain. God bless you all…please go to a dentist and get well.
PEACE!
I am in so much pain. I have many rotten teeth. i was addicted to internet gambling for 2 years and now have been clear of it for a year. during the time i gambled i paid no attention to my teeth, i drank large amounts of coke and energy drinks. did not get hardly any sleep and lots a ton of money. now i have only 1 tooth without cavities and it hurts like the rest of my teeth. all of my back teeth are bad and half gone and are hurting like hel? i had 3 hours of sleep in the last three days, i have been taking darvoset for 2 days and it helps but i feel im close to overdosing because they only last for 2 hours and then it is back to the pain. i have this stuff called RED CROSS to put on the affected area and it helps a little but it burns the crap out of my mouth. cant be to good to keep using this for long. my freind brought me some vicodine today thank god. i am deathly afraid of the dentist. last time i went they told me $30,000 to fix my teeth i think i will just wait until they all rot and get dentures it cant be that bad. i read somewhere to tap on your tooth until it stopped hurting. for like ten minutes with me finger. it actually made the madening pain go away for a while. thank god for the internet and meds.
did u think the tapping was a self meditaiton
u should have tried pulling,, a good pull sometimes takes the pain away.
I don’t mean tie a string to your tooth and slam a door
I mean give’er a good pull,
oh but make sure you drop your pants first,,lmao
My tooth had to be filled 2 times in the last 4 years and about 10 months ago it cracked away from tooth. It just started bothering me about a month ago. Last night it started throbbing my left side of jaw. The wierd thing is I put water in my mouth and hold it around my tooth and the pain instantly goes away, for a few minutes. I can just keep doing this and it will stop but get no damn sleep. Going to dentist tomorrow.
In so much pain right now.
I rather be hit donkey punched by a prison inmate named Guido then slammed into bus and fall of a cliff with jagged rocks to be eaten alive in the water by sharks with not so sharp teeth. Went to the dentist today gave me antibiotics and Vicodin. I have to go to a specialist to get this bitch taken out. If I do not get my root canal within 5 days. I am going to kill myself with a plastic spork.
Tried EVERY FREAKING REMEDY UNDER THE SUN. Drinking. Went to a dentist, got perscription for antibiotics and pain killers. Yea they help but, it still hurts like a SOB the ONLY ONLY ONLY thing that helps is like the post a few days ago I believe the oct 8th. The person with icewater. I’m always carrrying around icewater and coating the tooth. I pee like crazy since its forcing me to drink like 4 gallons LITERALLY a day.
Stuff tried and results.
hot salt water -hurts more
cold salt water – same as icewater helps out only while its in my mouth
garlic – nothing
kissing – nothing
sex – take a sip of cold water, hold it in my mouth and sex is good.. but, doesn’t help
many many many many many more.
My case is a lot different than most too. the pic is using the computer screen as a back ground and its small so you can see the screen behind the xray lol.

its the wisdom tooth.. Grew in COMPLETELY sideways and now its ON TOP of my nerve growing constantly more and more into a deeper and deeper nerve cracking and absessing my tooth more and more every second. percocet, 1200mg tylenol, 1200mg ibuprofen and 4 asprin helps some.. but, still having to sip ice water down 24/7. I can’t sleep good since the only way to get to sleep is by holding water in my mouth after a few shots and pass out.
My girl has to make sure I sleep on my belly in case I vomit in my sleep and choke. my advice to EVERYBODY!!!!!
GET A CO SIGNER OR GET A LOAN TODAY BEG TO ANYONE TRUST ME. The person I least expected gave me a loan.. MY BOSS. I’ve been out of work for a week tomorrow I go in for my oral surgery. 4 surgeons turned me down due to complications and knowing how much blood I will lose.
Just do anything, if you get a case like mine I feel great sympathy for you and in any toothache cause these are the worst feelings. I’m one who endures a lot, I’m a MMA fighter, a cage fighter, kickboxer and jiu jitsu competitor. Bones and aches hurt but, you can lay down and the pain goes away. This pain is so persistant its tourture. Please get all your teeth stuff taken care of immediately. I’m now going to school for dentistry and oral surgeon just based on how bad people need people who are willing to work with you. Not people in it for money.
I have 14 severely decayed teeth (4 under the gumline). I’ve tried the vodka, acetometaphen, ibupofen, napoxen sodium, garlic, ice water, warm water, salt water, antiseptic mouthwash. Nothing seems to help. Its been this way for 4 years. I dont have the money for the surgery, nor anyone willing to help with a loan. I’ve tried everything, and nothing seems to work. Any ideas?
UPDATE. I had to get put out for the procudure.. 24 stiches later, I’m fine. Nothing but a lack of a few teeth in the back.. but, it feels SOOOO MUCH BETTER. The next day it was better than my toothache and it hurt like hell haha. My advice for the person who couldn’t get help. Talk to the DENTISTS not the receptionist. They might help more.. Goto your local health clinic. (here they were not accepting new people I got shafted) and get a co-signer based on your car or house.. It gets so bad you can’t work right? well, how can you make money. You will lose your car anyways if you don’t get it fixed. I got mine out and I couldn’t be happier! It feels SOOO good to be able to chew. And also I live in south florida, People from here drive all the way up to florence south caralina for some clinic who does extractions for 60 dollars each and 1000 for a full set of dentures
Let me tell you for years I’ve had extractions and absses teeth. My mother has like 3 teeth the rsetare fake (she had them yanked around her 20s). So after years of tooth pain and hateing the dentist I made a vow. I figured Im still kinda yound at the time 26 so Id getthem all fixed. Had to get a credit line for it even with my dentalinsurance at work.We are talking over 8 thou. Dentist had a field day my requirment was no more tooth pain didnt care if they where glowing white or perfectly straight. So I go in for at least one visit a week for a year (multiple root cannals). Figure Im good. Year later I have severe pain in my jaw go in get mouthed at missed my 6 month check up (had food posioning and in ER around that time). Dentist says nothings wrong Im grinding my teeth in my sleep although I told him this is how my abssess usually start. He schedules me for a cleaning and mouth gaurd fitting (which insurance wont cover 600 bucks right there). Low and behold two days after visit gums blowen up with infection. I call they say come in for cleaning and fitting still in 2 days. I personally ahve spent over 9 thou on my mouth in 2 years and not for cosmetics. Now I have trouble again. If your someone with constant bad teeth seriously consider getting them yanked and having fake teeth far cheaper. My dental bill is almost half of mygrad school loans I still owe. And Im missing work as my kids would probably hit my mouth as they tend to bite hit and punch anyway. i hate dentists I needd to vent thanks.
Whoever it was that suggested TAPPING ON THE TOOTH, I would like to thank you. Due to trying your tip, after all else failed, I managed to bring myself to tap on it. All that did for me was cause the already excruciating pain to skyrocket to new heights. I don’t suggest that ANY of you try it. 16 hours later and I’m still regretting trying it.
I like most of you have had teeth problems all of my life. I had my first extraction at 15 and have a erthyomicine stain throughout my teeth since my baby teeth first came in. So, not only do I have on/off tooth problems, but my teeth are not the greatest to visually look at either. Today I am home with a tooth and gum infection. The dentist I saw last year told me how I should have this removed or that one done but never addressed the tooth that is cracked in half and is still currently bothering me today. Because of the condition of my teeth I cannot have anything to hot or cold because the teeth are sensitive. What happens to me is sometimes not only does on tooth hurt but all the gums go in pain from the sensitivity. This would drive anyone insane to say the least.I do everything I should.I brush twice a day, floss, and stay away from colas or sweet foods.I really think that with modern medicine today we would be able to find a better treatment for this kind of pain. The antibiotics work but take so long to kick in and extra strength Tylonel is all I can take for pain. I have however found a few things that have helped me in the past and wanted to share them. One is-Dentek temporary filling. This helps if you place over the cracked tooth creating a filling and sometimes stops pain in its tracks till you go to the dentist. The other is Orael tooth desensitizer. This works and lasts up to a month if you have sensitive teeth. Hot and cold packs just aggravate pain, salt water does help to rinse with but has to be warm. The saddest thing about the tooth pain I have today is that last year the dentist gave me an antibiotic to rid infection, set an appointment for me,then never removed the tooth then I want to yank out today. What gives?
Arghhhh. I went into the dentist (private..no NHS available) 3 weeks ago and was told needed 2 root canals. Had them done a week later. Then..about 4 days ago started to get V V V bad pain in the other side of my mouth. Went in yesterday (Im lucky – they see you the same day here) and he says I have an absiss or whatever and prescribes me Metronizadole and Amoxycilin in huge doses and books me for another root canal on Wed. So..yesterday I get home, have lunch and take the 1st of my antibiotics. A few mins later my necklace feels a bit tight. Then my lips are swelling. Then I am itching like mad. I phone 999 and open front door. Then I start having breathing problems. Then I black out! Turns out I am quite allergic to Metronizidole….kind of really badly allergic actually.
Anyway..phoned the dentist this avo and he tells me to come strait in to have the canal done on the spot. Did so. Now I AM IN AGONY. I was so relieved to have it done but now the pain relief has worn off that he gave me and I can not sleep. I am waiting for Sainsbury’s to open to send my husband down there to get EVERYTHING THEY HAVE. Now it’s 5.50am, husband has to work today and I have an 18month old and a 3 year old to look after. Im telling you..natural childbirth with no pain relief was nicer than this. I hate my teeth…dentures are looking quite tempting at this stage!!!
Sohpie your dentist really should have checked if you are allergic to penicillin before prescribing you antibiotics. The Metronizadole is an absolute killer!! Very strong and made me feel very very ill – sick, dizzy, upset stomach, etc., etc. This time I asked for a different AB for my abscess and the dentist seemed a bit sniffy about it. Even the amoxycillin makes me ill, but not so badly.
In the two years I have been with this dentist I have had two abscesses – the first in my life – on the same tooth. The first just after it had been filled for the first time. No refunds are offered if they get it wrong, you have to pay again for them to fix it!
To be honest over the counter pain relief does not touch the pain from an abscess. I found the only thing that worked was the idea I read on here of holding whisky over the affected tooth – it seems to take the edge off the pain to make it bearable at least temporarily.
You sound as if you live in the UK? What I find odd is that medical care is free (other than paying for a prescription) yet you have to pay a fortune for dental care (even NHS dentists are expensive – I was quoted £800 for a one tooth bridge). People can take up a doctor’s time with a cold or sniffle that aspirin would cure yet if you are forced to get dental treatment due to crushing pain a) you may need to wait for weeks and b) you have to pay through the nose. Clearly the Government don’t think dental care is vital – which suggests the legislation makers have never been in this sort of pain!
I used to love my teeth but regular dental care seems to have destroyed them!
Susan
Susan,
I totally agree and think it’s completeley bizarre that you can pop over to the GP with a runny nose and not pay anything and yet the dentist is so expensive, It’s no wonder that most people just ignore the pain until they are desperate. My pain is much better now as I have got some great paracetamol with codeine and nurofen too and combined they seem to be working. Good luck to everyone else…best to go to the dentist every 6 months – 1 year I say – I am never going through 3 root canals in one week again!!
It has been about 7 years since I have been to the dentist not counting last week when I had my back bottom tooth extracted because of more pain than I thought possible. Thinking this was going to solve my immediate problem I was thrilled to have it done however it did not solve my problem and seems to have made it worse. The tooth in front of the one that was extracted needs a root canal which I have scheduled to be done 7 days from now. The best I can tell is the tooth that was extracted was not my problem it is the tooth that needs the root canal. It hurts so bad it makes even behind my left ear ache like I have an ear infection and my ears pop and I have pressure in my head like I have an sinus infection. Can someone tell me if this is normal or do I have other problems than just a tooth ache?
I have been in pain for more than 2 years. On and off, went to the dentist and found that one of my wisdom teeth was never pulled and was growing into the other teeth. The only thing that eases the pain was salt/pepper water, and 3 Extra Strength Tylanol and 3 Advil. Pain has started to subside for now…I know its going to come back in an hour or so. I think I am going to OD on advil and tylanol. I wish my dentist was here…I would rather have no pain and no teeth than this pain I am bearing….f*** the pain is coming back.
Pain sucks. I am so glad that I found this site. My heart goes out to each and every one of you. I am 20 years old and I have two abscessed teeth. I didn’t take care of them when I was younger. So stupid! I would like to get the bad ones pulled and replaced with dental implants, only problem, $1600 per tooth. Up at 1:51 drinking vodka and oragel. Hope I can get some sleep soon. Pain is starting to lessen after six IBs, an antibiotic, too much vodka, and an entire tube of orgel. Best of luck to you all.
I am in the same boat as many people on here. About two weeks ago I had a molar extracted because of pain that made it hard to see straight. All was well until late last week when my wisdom and tooth on the other side of the extraction point started hurting to the point of no sleep and uncontroled tears coming from my eyes. I found this site looking for more temporary fixes for pain as I have been on a 3 tube of Orajel a week for the last 3 years for all my teeth due to my major consumption of soda drinks and poor oral hygine.
I just need to hold out until friday. then my dental insurance goes into effect and I can get my teeth removed and get some false ones.
If you have kids or younger brothers and sister force them to have good oral hygine. I tell everyone I know that your teeth are the one thing you HAVE to take extra care of. Learn from my mistake and take care of your teeth.
Because before you know it you have a mouth ful of rotten ugly teeth that cause you the worst pain known to man and only a very large dental bill to look forward too.
For everyone out there with no/little insurance, there are options other than choosing between a regular (expensive) clinic and suffering with the pain. Some universities have dental programs where students do the majority of the work for a reduced rate (but always under the supervision of a real dentist). There also shelters or missions that offer reduced/sliding scale fees or even free work for those who qualify.
I have been where you guys are, and wept while reading about your pain. No one who hasn’t experienced it can understand. Just know there is help out there.
THIS HELPS!
ok I’ve had shitty rotten teeth for years now. I was assaulted at 19 and left with hairline fractures throughout my jaw and teeth, causing some teeth to randomly crack and crumble away every so often. Whenever they feel like it. And pretty soon after – AGONY!
I haven’t slept in 3 days. This tooth has been driving me nuts for months, on and off. There is no rhythm to the pain and why it’s there some days and gone on others.
I’m from the UK and we have the NHS here. No private insurance. Everybody pays national insurance coz private dentists, although handy, cost a fortune for mere normal folk like me. So I went to the NHS dentist and was refused treatment. I made a call to the emergency hospital dentist and was told I had seen them twice already in the last five years, I had to register with an NHS dentist. So I can’t get treatment. I’ve found salvation in a friends dentist who HAS agreed to see me….in 2 weeks.
Until then I have a plan, and it worked today. Very cold (not ice cold) water swilled around the painful area. It hurts like hell for the first 5-10 seconds, but then the pain washes away for about a minute or so…rinse, repeat. Also, if it’s a cavity – bread. fill it with bread. swish the cold water. rinse, repeat.
When it’s daytime and the shops are open, find ibuprofen mixed with codeine, over the counter. Take 800mg Ibuprofen and 25-30mg codeine, then 2 hours later, take 1000mg paracetamol. Then 2 hours later the Ibuprofen again. Bread, Water, Painkillers. Keep cycling and the pain will only be about an 8th as bad as it is now.
Do you know what..?I think the British dental system is terrible. I am entitled to an NHS Dentist but can’t find one with spaces in my area so I have spent the total of nearly £3000 in the last 3 weeks on root canals and hygeinist visits. That is money that I can ill afford – my husband is a plumber and I am a stay at home Mum to 2 young children. But I can’t cope with the agonising pain of bad teeth and had no choice but to have them dealt with. I think it is outrageous. I’ve even been told that there isnt any space for my 3 year old or 18 month old in any NHS dentist in the area so will have to treat them privately too AND my current dentist doesnt even offer a discount for kids. If I wan to educate my children to keep healthy teeth then I will have to bite the bullit and pay adult prices for them too. It’s a nightmare and something should be done about it. I’m sure that like all the good schools, the places in the NHS dentists are taken up by people who can afford private treatment and that therefor it is people like me and my family who have to spend more and suffer. Rant over!!!!
Whew. There’s a lot of pain on this page! I guess misery does love company. I had tried everything I knew to do, and went searching for more answers. Whiel I was reading this page, the ‘treatments’ that I had given myself had started to work. Finally. I’m off to get some sleep. But, I’ll tell you what I know and hope it hels.
The reason alcohol works is because is is an antiseptic. So are garlic, onion, and cloves.
Another great solution is cranberry juice. If the tooth is really bad, you might want to have the cranberry juice at room temperature. Swish it around your mouth, and then swallow it. Do it a few times a day. It will also remove plaque from your teeth, and your arteries. Potent stuff!
Another thing that works great is to take a vitamin E capsule and squeeze the oil right on to your tooth.
Just like meds, these solutions might take a few days to start clearing up the infection. But at least if you’re using natural solutions, you don’t have to worry about killing yourself over your toothache.
In the US, you can get temporary filling stuff that will at least fill the hole. Just make sure you’ve cleaned it first, otherwise you’ll be sealing in the bacteria. That would be really bad.
The oil of cloves is a pretty amazing pain reliever at least for a while.
Aside from taking care of your teeth with cleaning and flossing – diet is really important too. Make sure you are getting enough of the nutrients you need to keep you whole body healthy and strong.
I hope we all get a good night’s sleep tonight 🙂
I am in soooooo much Pain! I wish that I could place Vodka on my tooth but, I can’t I am at work. I have tried handfuls of Tylenol and Took Tylenol PM to try to get to sleep. My last wisdom tooth that needs to be pulled out is chipped and I can fill the area throbbing and it is making my jaw hurt soooooo bad to were it is giving me a headache!. So, yesterday moring on Saturday I could not stand it! So, I went to the emergency room at the Hospital. They did not do a thing! They said it was there policy not to prescribe patients with Dental pain with Narcotics! They just gave me Pinicillin. And told me to take Anti-inflamatorys! I told the Doctor that the anti-inflammatorys did not work. I was sitting there in pain crying in front of the Doctor and he did not do nothing! nothing! I just needed some type of pain relief to last me through Sunday. Man I am in pain!
I feel everyone’s pain. I am on day seven. I had my tooth pulled last Thursday. I was given Vicodin, which made me violently sick. The vomiting caused my clot to dislodge and I ended up with a dry socket. On Monday the dentist numbed me up again and scrapped out the remnants of the old clot and formed a new one. He said I should have no more pain. BOY WAS HE WRONG. I ended up taking 4 Aleves and 2 Vicodin within one hour. The next day I show back up at his office my face swollen and red. I am in so much pain I want to grab his balls and twist as hard as I can to make him feel an OUNCE of what I was feeling. He said I had ANOTHER dry socket! Added on to that, my pain was now radiating to my jaw and ear, plus to my upper teeth! He scraped again, but this time he packed and sutured. Here we are, on day 3 and I am still in pain. My fabulous co worker told me to try teething tablets (Hyland’s.) She said she had a dry socket and it really helped. I just tried it about an hour ago and I am having some relief. Right now, I will take some relief over none at all. I go see my dentist later on. Hopefully some good news and maybe some Toradol!
Hi i had a replacement crown on my central incisor fitted on Tuesday but it is giving me pain from hell when my bottom teeth hits it also my face hurts under my nose and to the side of it as well. it was fine when i had the temp crown in.
Is this normal will it settle down or do you think i will need to have a refit or could it be a abscess
I have been taking Ibuprofen for the pain but its not helping one little bit
MY (temporary) REMEDY FOR TOOTHACHE
Hello! This post is very long, but please read it as you will learn some of the MOST VALUABLE info of your entire life (especially the 2nd half of this message). As you already know, many cases of tooth pain are caused by infection and bacteria in the tooth/gums. I have 2 BAD teeth – one that had a root canal and now what’s left of the tooth is slowly crumbling away. This tooth and another bad one get very painful every now and then (when they are invaded with bacteria, if I haven’t flossed for a few days :|).
What I do to kill the pain (and the infection=source of the pain) is floss well around the tooth and swish thoroughly with full-strength hydrogen peroxide (by full-strength, I mean not diluted with water). Next, dip your toothbrush in full-strength peroxide and gently brush the gums around the tooth.
*Pour a small amount from the bottle into a cup to do this – don’t put your toothbrush into the bottle or you will contaminate the entire bottle* Also, gently push the bristles of the toothbrush into the spaces around the affected tooth so you can get the peroxide in between the teeth. Dip your toothbrush into the peroxide frequently to make sure there is always plenty on there. You want to completely saturate the tooth and surrounding gum area with it. Your gums will turn white around the tooth socket, but this is harmless and will gradully disappear within 1/2 hour or so. Don’t brush too hard or you will irritate the gums and they will be tender and sore later. If there is a visible cavity in your tooth, put peroxide on your toothbrush and GENTLY dab the bristles on the cavity. What you are trying to do here is push the peroxide down into the hole so it can kill the bacteria that have entered the tooth through the hole (the cavity).
This REALLY does work! Anytime I get a tooth ache, I simply get out my $0.48 bottle of peroxide, swish well and the tooth feels better. I usually experience some relief immediately, but sometimes it takes a few times of swishing before the pain subsides. This is because the bacteria is inside the tooth and therefore difficult to get at.
Much of the pain of a toothache is actually caused by the BACTERIA that has entered into the tooth through the cavity. The body reacts to the bacteria by sending white blood cells (and other stuff) to the area to fight the bacteria and wall off the area. This results in SWELLING/INFLAMMATION. The swelling for the most part is what is causing the PAIN. So in essence, the bacteria is what is causing the pain. No Bacteria = No Swelling, No Swelling = No Pain. So, part of the remedy for the PAIN is to KILL the BACTERIA (the reason why after you start taking antibiotics, the pain gets better). PERIXIDE KILLS BACTERIA, PERION. If it works for skin wound infections, why not teeth and gums? I am sure have heard many times before “Dentists recommend brushing with baking soda and peroxide”.
And don’t stop at the bad tooth! Do this with all of your teeth! Swish your whole mouth with it! It works especially well after flossing because the spaces in the gums are cleared out and the peroxide can get in there. It seeks out the bacteria. Where there is bacteria, it will turn white. Brush your tongue with it as well. You will be simply AMAZED at how fresh your breath is ALL DAY!! It is the BACTERIA that is causing your BAD BREATH! Hydrogen peroxide is nothing short of a MIRACLE!
**Make sure you use the over-the counter 3% peroxide and nothing stronger than this or you could cause more damage/erosin to your teeth and burns to your gums**
I must tell you one more EXTREMELY VALUABLE use for peroxide: IT KILLS & PREVENTS COLDS, FLU, STREP-THROAT & OTHER VIRUSES! I have been using it for 3 years now and I have NOT been sick once in 3 years!!! Until using peroxide, I NEVER went through an entire cold/flu season without getting sick AT LEAST once! I was LUCKY if it was only once! This is NO exaggeration: even if I don’t do the peroxide right away when I notice the symptoms (I’m away from home, etc), and even if the body aches/chills have already started, I do the peroxide treatment and ALL SYPMTOMS ARE GONE WITHIN 45 MIN – 1 1/2 HOURS!!! Please try this! I tell everyone about this that will listen! Being sick is so miserable! I just want to spare as many people as I can from that misery! And now this Bird-Flu scare! Guess what? I am NOT AFRAID! 🙂
This is what you do: THE VERY MINUTE you feel like you may be coming down with something, get your bottle of over-the-counter 3% hydrogen peroxide. Gargle with it full-strength and DO NOT SWALLOW IT! Spit it out and then gargle with warm water. Do this two more times. Then, pour a very tiny amount into the peroxide bottle cap (about 1/4 capful), tilt your head to the side and pour it into your EAR. (make sure your peroxide is NOT cold or it will hurt!) You will feel it drain down into your ear canal. It will feel strange at first and you may feel and hear the bubbling (it’s killing GERMS!). It feels wierd at first, but don’t worry it won’t hurt you (I have done this at least 100 times over the pasdt 3 1/2 years with no adverse effects). Leave it in there for about 15-20 seconds. Hold a tissue over your ead and tip your head so the peroxide can drain out. Then take a Q-tip and GENTLY dry out the inside of your ear with it. Use as many as you need to use until the ear feels dry. Repeat all steps on the other side. Peroxide is a wonderful ear as well! In fact, doctor’s use it to clean their patient’s ears.
DO NOT THE LEAVE THE PEROXIDE IN LONGER THAN 15-20 SECONDS OR YOU MAY GET AN EARACHE! I recommend 15-20 seconds as a safe amount of time. I actually leave mine in for around 30 seconds, because I know this works for me. Some people may have more sensitive ears. You can adjust the time as you learn the sensitivity of your ears. When I first started doing this, I left it in for about 2 minutes. I figured I could really kill the germs good by leaving it in so long! I had THE WORST earache of my life! It scared me and I almost went to the doctor, but decided to wait it out. It eventually went away many hours later, but the ear was tender for a few days after.
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! I wish you all LESS PAIN and no more SICK DAYS!!!!
Donna 🙂
Thanks to StumbleUpon for leading me to this site. Kind of ironic really as I only just updated my blog (http://www.bigrac.com) today having just returned from my Hungarian dentist – and I live in the UK!
I would reccommend this clinic to anyone, OK it’ll cost a bit, but for me it was one third of the prices quoted in the UK.
After suffering 30 odd years on dental hell, I do not have to worry about my teeth any more 🙂
