Kick Off World

kickoffworld

I’m not a huge fan of football or spectator sports but there’s a certain charm about Kick Off World or “The Player Manager 2016” (I can’t decide what it’s called). It’s a remake of the Kickoff/Player Manager games of the 90’s on the Amiga. Graphics are simplified of course. The view of the playing field is overhead like in Kickoff or Microprose Soccer but still manages to be interesting, at least for the first few matches. You can also skip the game and go straight to the results if all you’re interested in is the managerial side of the game.

There’s loads to see in the game, lots of players and teams as well as options to set tactics. Go get it on Windows, Mac, Linux or even Android. They’re all linked from their homepage including a (slightly out of date) Flash version you can play in your browser! Watch out for updates on their Facebook page.

Ireland played three games against Spain in the run-up to the 1966 World Cup.

  • We’ve got a game to win

In 1988 the Republic of Ireland football squad qualified for their first major international championship.

Microprose Soccer, World Cup 2010 Edition

Wow, I’m impressed. AEG Soft have modified the original C64 version of Microprose Soccer and updated it. It now has the teams that will appear in this year’s World Cup in South Africa!

My brothers loved this game back in the day, and I played it a small bit too. If I was a football fan I’d probably boot up Vice to play it too. Anyone going to try it?

Humour When-in-Ireland

What do the fans think of the FAI?

The fans weren’t too happy when the Republic of Ireland soccer team only narrowly beat San Marino on Wednesday night. They were expecting much more from the national team as can be seen from this video grabbed off Explic.it (‘gratz to Foot.ie for getting on the news!):

So, what did they do? Take a look at the Wikipedia page for the Football Association of Ireland. Looks ok doesn’t it, except for the notice saying, “Editing of this article by unregistered or newly registered users is currently disabled.” Why is that? Someone vandalised the page, which is unfortunate but almost forgiveable. Check the history page for more details. Here’s what they wrote:

They are a really nice, intelligent, clever, stand up gang and not a bunch of Fucking useless cunts that should be taken out and shot. Everything that they touch turns to ash. wheither it’s the Eircom League, all the money that they blew after the 1990 & 1994 world Cups, the Building of Eircom Park, The Roy keane incident, The Sacking Of Brian Kerr after he did the best that he could right down to the Appiontment of a man without no managerial experience and who talks through his arse…Mr Steve Staunton! the organising body for the sport of association football (soccer) in the Republic of Ireland.

Irish Soccer star, Roy Keane, …

Irish Soccer star, Roy Keane, has been sent home. I got that message in a blank email stating, Roy Keane sent home, thanks Dod for the heads-up.
rte.ie and ireland.com are both sluggish, probably with Irish people trying to find out more. online.ie is still responsive but there isn’t much news there yet, and irishworldcup.com doesn’t have any news of his leaving at this time.
Just in: Ireland.com has an article on it. (Thanks Gearoid!)
UPDATE: More links from Gearoid.

Take out your frustrations on Mick McCarthy

Ireland.com has more on the story – He’ll only be replaced if FIFA see that he’s injured, apparently!

Here’s a petition to sign regarding this matter, although the aims of the petition aren’t spelt out clearly, it’s a start.
