Petrol prices are rising and rising. In the UK they’ve hit £4/gallon which is about 1.28 Euro a litre. *Ouch*
Prices in Ireland have hit 1.059 Euro a litre, and probably higher. The Government gets about 65% of the price through taxes so the taxman must have a huge grin on his face!
The AA recommend that you buy your petrol by volume instead of money. Instead of buying 20 Euro of petrol, buy 20 litres of petrol. You’ll be shocked at how much difference a small change makes. I bought 20 litres last week and it cost me 20.58 Euro, but last night in Bandon the same fuel cost me 21.18 Euro!
Up and up and up and up ….

Starting a Business in Ireland
Starting a Business in Ireland.com looks like a promo site but has a couple of good links.
Of immediate interest will be Revenue.ie, Oasis has a page on starting a bussiness, and here’s a another page without specifics, but then you should pay them for advice, right? 😉
This Is Home
This is where I call home! Googe Maps finally gets satellite data for The Cork region. (yes, they probably have had it for ages but I’m not obsessive)
You can see the bird sanctuary where I took a number of photos.
Here’s where I grew up.
IOL used to have a map server. I remember looking at that and marvelling that I could make out the front drive of my home! The Google maps don’t seem to have the same resolution yet.
Ah, now I don’t have to tell people how to get to my house, I’ll just point them at the URL above and they can follow the satellite maps!
Cheap computer components suppliers.
Here’s a list of suppliers who can do you for computer parts. Some UK based, some Irish, but useful comments to go along with them.
Sit-in at city shop
I went into town this morning and came across this group of protestors on Princes Street. I didn’t know it at the time, but they were employees of O’Donovans Butchers, a 105 year old company with a premises on the street. They had all been let go the previous day. The Evening Echo has more on their front page.
The workers were protesting because they were laid off almost a week early with very little compensation despite many years of service in some cases.
Can any Irish SMEs come to the parliament to prevent SWPAT?
Ciaran O’Riordan asks Irish business to go to Brussels and talk to their MEPs about software patents. We really only have next week to catch them in their offices, so who’s going?
Contact your local TD if you can!
Here’s that Guardian article RMS wrote with a very simple and clear example to show why patents are not the same as copyright, why they are absurd!
Later.. Brian has more.
Bonfire Night
It’s bonfire night here in Cork. Is this celebrated anywhere else in Ireland? I was at home in the suburbs earlier and I could see black smoke rising from all around. Needless to say, this night is one of the busiest for the fire service!
Red Bull Air Race – Rock of Cashel, July 24th
The Red Bull Air Race comes to Ireland on July 24th this year! The only way of getting tickets is by a draw, so I hope I get a few!
If you missed the race, check out my photos for a flavour of the event!
Get your tickets here! Just enter the draw on this page and you’ll be in with a chance to win some tickets!
Update! Wooo! I won tickets for myself and my friends! The only way to get them is by entering the competition on the Red Bull site which I did several weeks ago!
What's on in Cork?
Next Saturday, June 4th, over 250 crews will row from the mouth of Cork Harbour to Cork City centre. Ocean to City and Cork 2005 have more details, but if the weather’s nice I’ll be there!
European Street Theatre will come to Cork with the arrival of Compagnie Jo Bithume’s ‘Victor Frankenstein’. Now to figure out how to get a few tickets!
Cork WideScreen Gala Night in the City Hall presents six short documentaries that have been produced in Cork. Start time is 7.30pm, so I doubt I’ll be there – we’ll be in a pub elsewhere!
Heineken have sponsored a busy weekend’s worth of music and entertainment! Full listing above!
Even more gigs are of course listed at Cork Gigs.com, including Mundy on Friday night in the Cruiscin Lan, and Fred (just noticed the tedtheband site too! heh.) later on in the summer!
The Cork 2005 site is awful – the javascript calendar doesn’t work in Firefox, and more than one tab open with it drags my machine down! *gah*
