Hand-held photo of St. Finbarr’s Cathedral and the River Lee. The original was very dark and the colour was spoilt by the local street lights. Converting it to black and white and adjusting the contrast made for a nice photo IMO!

Old vs New
Pictured from near the Opera House, you can see Shandon, and the construction work building a new appartment block near the river.
Factory Shop
Any Corkonians reading this will probably recognise the sign in the background. Before the by-pass was built most traffic going north-west from the City would have passed through Blackpool. I can’t remember this place ever being open! Does anyone know what they made and sold?
Legal, schmegal – Photography rights challenged, again!
I thought this was going to be a slightly alarmist story about the heavy handed nature of the law when I read “riot act” but it turned out well enough in the end.
Almost on topic, I remember taking a photo of a dramatic painting in the Louvre years ago. I thought I had disabled the flash, but no, I hadn’t and bright white light poured into the room when I pressed the shutter button!
No sooner had I realised my mistake than an irate lady came pounding up to me gesticulating wildly and berating me, in French, for destroying a work of art! Unfortunately, my French was only slightly better than it is now (and that extends to about a dozen words!) but I didn’t need a gift with languages to realise what she was saying! *gulp*
I still have that photo at home somewhere..
Abstracting The Landscape
Thoughtful and interesting essay on shooting landscapes. 2 great photos included.
I find that by cropping a shot later I can completely change what an image feels like. When you work with high resolution images you can crop aggressively if you’re only going to be displaying the images online!
What's in a street name?
Cathedral Walk, or Casan na hEaglaise lies just behind the brewery in Blackpool. The street is named for the North Cathedral which is situated up the hill from this road. (the Cathedral used to be pictured in the photo above but can be seen to the right of the original photo.)
Blackpool Side Street
Never having been down this street before, I snapped a few pics of it. That guy walking up the road is a van driver who stopped to talk and joke with me before heading off!
The Willful
The Willful played in the Coal Quay Bar last night and went down a storm! Great night, especially as I hadn’t been to that pub in months!

30 Seconds to Good Light
In this essay it’s the timing that’s all important. It’s amazing the difference a shaft of golden sunlight makes to a dull overcast scene!
Keepers – what to keep
In Keepers, Lain Briot tackles the question of, “what photographs to keep.”
I avoid that question totally by keeping almost 100% of my photos, even the blurry pics of the empty street when my subject has walked off! Crank out the DVD burner again!
