I listen to podcasts

It was nice to hear an Irish voice, Sorcha, on the latest episode, Leif, of Heavyweight.

Also, I totally forgot that Pocketcasts has a web player that syncs with the app. So handy!

Another great episode of Cautionary Tales I listened to recently:

All their episodes are great. You should subscribe.

If you watched The Dig on Netflix, you’ll love listening to this episode of the Short History Of… podcast. Even though it’s a “short history”, it has a lot more detail about the dig at Sutton Hoo, the treasures found there and in nearby mounds.

I started listening to a new Sherlock Holmes podcast. I’m only on the first episode, but it has the same feel as the recent TV series, and I’m very much enjoying it so far!

Some of us are still blogging for the hell of it. (HN)

If you’re on the Fediverse, you’re blogging, IMO. 🙂

  1. How long will your photos, videos and writing last? It blows my mind that people take loads of photos with their phones but then start running out of space and have to delete their previous photos.
Anyway, archiving photos is important to me so hearing about resurrecting the Doomsday project on the UK was interesting to me.

The Windrush generation suffered deportations, stress and discrimination in recent years because of archiving problems. Their landing cards from the 50s and 60s had been dumped by the Home Office during an office move!

  2. Standing Together is a group of Palestinian and Israeli people in Israel who are trying to bring peace to the streets of Israel.

“That’s where Standing Together comes in. It’s a peace movement, comprising Jews and Palestinians who are trying to jointly diffuse tensions on the streets of their neighbourhoods. For Assignment Emily Wither talks to two Jewish Israelis and two Palestinian citizens of Israel, who work for the organisation, about their different experiences of growing up in Israel and their hopes for the future.”

  3. TIL about Candida Auris, a fungus that has a fatality rate of 88% and is spreading in hospitals and care homes in the US and Spain. When it’s found in a hospital, the ward is closed down, and they burn the mattresses and bed clothes. If a virus is exhaled, it dies, but if a fungus spore is exhaled and falls on your mattress or nearby clothes, it will grow, just like a plant.

If a person dies of it, the body is burned because it will become compost for the fungus!
Thanks Future Proof. (that timestamp may not be entirely accurate as they insert dynamic ads in the show)

  4. “If Books Could Kill” rips The 4 Hour Workweek a new one.

    https://pca.st/episode/52774757-1739-4f86-aa7b-fcb66c54a124

Some of the bookmarks I made while listening to this episode:

    09:30 it’s advice for a 28 year old millionaire.
12:56 it’s a 4 hour work week for you, but your 3 slaves work full time.
17:40 use assistants to do your work. Pay them $5/hour.
19:04 outsource your therapist sessions. Your assistant can go. “Surprisingly”, his therapist said no to this.
26:25 to be an expert, you only need to know a bit more than your customer,
27:18 be an expert in 4 weeks. Join a few trade organisations in your field. Read the top selling books on the topic. Give one free seminar at the closest well known university. Leverage that to give some seminars at large corporations. Write an article for a local trade magazine, if declined, offer to interview someone. (Outdated, join “Profnet” to connect journalists with experts for articles. -> Their reaction is “this would work”.
42:36 travelling with kids is safer, less guns abroad! He doesn’t seem to realise parents need to send their kids to school!

At 43:15 they come to the conclusion that Tim Ferris wrote the Four Hour Workweek to show how his millionaire lifestyle, unattached to anything, travelling anywhere life is so awesome!

As if to reiterate that he’s bragging, at 44:08 they mention that Tim’s next book includes advice on the 15 minute female orgasm.

    Oof. 🙂

  5. Great episode about tidal power. You know it’s a BBC podcast when they don’t mention Ireland. Well, they did, at the start, but then listing all the great locations for tidal power at the end they mention Northern Ireland, and not a word about the southern part of the island. Oh well.

The UK cuckoo plays eggs that look the same as the host birds eggs.
In Australia the cuckoo has moved on to the chick stage. The chick has to sound like the host’s chicks. They also observed there was a single chick left by itself (the cuckoo chick throws the other eggs out of the nest!). The host bird would take the nest apart with the cuckoo chick in it and rebuild the nest elsewhere and leave the cuckoo chick to starve to death.

Can comedy help combat a crisis? With Tadhg Hickey.
“A story like Israel’s war on Gaza naturally gets wall to wall news coverage. But sometimes blanket coverage over a prolonged period of time can start to lose its power, we start to get inured to it and its impact decreases.

So in order to keep getting the message out there, you need a new angle – and comedian and writer Tadhg Hickey certainly has that angle. Tadhg has become very well-known over the last few years for unique brand of comedy, which highlights global political issues in a very fresh and accessible way. He has always covered the Israel / Gaza conflict but over the last few months he has doubled down on it.”
