This is a technique that’ll make your photos that little bit more extra-ordinary!

Rules Du Jour – Stop the Spam!
The Spamassassin Rules Du Jour is an invaluable bash script that’ll update commonly used SA rules from various sites. Put it in /etc/cron.daily/ to have it run once a day!
I have SA fairly well trained already so it didn’t make much difference to my setup but it’s well worth installing especially as new classes of spam appear!
Fred's new EP – available online!
I missed it the other night but Fred played in the Lobby on Friday night to promote their new single.
The good news is that the single is available from their homepage to download and Fred will be the featured “rising band” on Tom Dunne’s show on Today FM.
Damn, wish I had known they played in Galway too, although it was last night.. Could I have driven down to Cork and gone to work this morning? hehe.
Mozilla Remote Exploit
Looks like a remotely exploitable hole has been found in Mozilla and Firefox. ‘Course, given the percentage of these browsers in the browser population one might be forgiven for not looking at this advisory with the attention it deserves. I bet a large minority of the visitors here and to linux.ie use the Mozilla family of browsers however.
Still, it’s been fixed in Moz 1.7 and FF 0.9, so upgrade, there’s no reason not to!
Wha's new is old, and what's changed is real
In this Sunday Morning Photographer article, Mike Johnston talks about the manipulation and distortion of photographs by post-processing them in some way.
Anyway, poor Fred, not a nice experience for him!
The Press Photo Exhibition – Galway
After arriving in Galway shortly after 1pm on Saturday I wandered around the touristy spots of the city for an hour until joined by Niall, Daniel and Kevin in the local shopping centre where the World Press Photography Exhibition was displayed as I previously mentioned.
The exhibition was great! Photos(which you can see online too) were stunning and thought provoking, especially images of war-torn parts of the world. The photos were mounted on panels and set in the public walk ways between shops. Each panel had a short description and background information and while we were there large crowds huddled around all of them. I didn’t know there’d be nature and sports images on display but my favourite of the nature shots has to be this stunning photo of Chicago from Lake Michigan. The web version doesn’t do it justice as the image on display was so big!
Happy Birthday Kevin!
It’s not for a few days yet but happy birthday Kevin! We all had a great day and it was great to meet old friends again!
Control Midtone Contrast
Or how to increase contrast without blowing out all the detail! Good tutorial but the effect created may be too subtle for many. I like it!
Run To The Light!
It doesn’t seem like a year has passed, but the 4th of July is almost upon us again! A year ago I went down to Lake Michigan with my flatmates to watch the brightly lit spectacle overhead! Mark has lots of tips on photographing fireworks on his blog, so if you’re in the USA, have a great time this weekend!
Mark's Coverage of Tech.Ed
Mark Twomey provides excellent coverage of the goings on at Tech.Ed in Amsterdam!
Militant European Linux users nearly started a fistfight with members of the Windows 2003 Server team when a FUD war went wrong. (The Microsoft definition of Open Source being somewhat different than the Linux community’s definition of Open Source.) The OS propagandists usually never come to blows as they all know that their arguments are only so much crap, but there were some very steamed up techies scurrying around the halls after a heated discussion or two today.
Microsoft’s Services for Unix guy was fun, asking assembled crowds how many of them were Linux/Unix developers who felt like fish out of water, laughing when most of the hands went up and saying that this was the safest place for them to be right now, or at least it was until the roaming packs of guys in the MSDN T-Shirts were sluggish after lunch and couldn’t chase them all that fast.
