Sometimes Windows can surprise you. I’m fixing up a PC that was infested with over a dozen dialers and spyware apps, and over 100 suspicious registry keys (thank you Adaware!)
After I cleaned out the machine I couldn’t bring up the display properties. I would get the above error message!
Thanks to this page I found a solution and now I know about a useful tool called “sfc” which can be used to restore individual files of a Windows (at least Win98 anyway) installation from the source cab files. A quick reboot later and I was able to change the screen resolution again!
Later, it looks like it’s not completely clean, there was still a reference to fntldr.exe in the win.ini.. That ptsnoop.exe looks suspicious too. Hmm. Must try some of the other anti-spyware out there.

Pic of the Day – Go Away!!!
Good photo that’d be much better if it had been rotated just a teensy bit to the left. Hope he used a zoom to get so close..
The House is Mine!
Contracts are signed, and I’ll be getting the keys on the 19th! I think that calls for a celebration this weekend!
As Niall on #linux said, Moving house, as a life experience, is up there with divorce and bereavement on the stress scales.
While I didn’t get a divorce, the last year has been rough. 2004 has been a rocking year so far! 🙂
Polarizers.. Can you see a difference?
This thread is interesting if you’ve wondered what use polarizers are. This message has 2 photos in it, with and without polarizer, and the difference is striking.
Here’s a lengthy article linked from the thread above. Lots here.
Finally, here’s a technical explanation on how polarizers work!
Cherry Blossom Girl – C64 rip off?
Has anyone else beside myself and Proinnsias noticed that the beginning of Cherry Blossom Girl
by Air sound very like a famous C64 tune? I don’t think so, as even Google hasn’t been very helpful!
Ah.. no wonder, it’s the radio mix, not the album version. I am trying desperately to remember what C64 game it came from.. It’s on the tip of my tongue but just out of reach!
Any C64 fans care to help? Listen to the radio remix
of the tune. The first 3-5 seconds or so sound very synthy with the ping, ping, ping sound.
What will NASA announce?
There’s plenty of speculation about what NASA will announce later. Some have serious ideas while the ridiculous is also suggested. 🙂
Spain takes on the world!
Russell spotted this special report in Time magazine on Spain. His time in Spain makes for interesting reading. Bah, I love Spanish culture (except for the smoking!) but perhaps Ireland isn’t such a bad place to live after all!
Set Yourself Free!
Mike Johnston is looking forward to better weather and suggests ways for photographers to take better photos. Nice, easy to read article and more to do with social engineering than any techincal aspect of picture taking.
Procmail Sanitizer 1.141 available
The Procmail Sanitizer has been updated and now scans inside zip files. I just tried it with a copy of MyDoom and it quarantined it on the server.
Later, After installed Fedora Core 1 on a new server I discovered that Metamail doesn’t ship with FC1. Bad, bad, it’s required for checking the zip files.
It’s available on ATrpms according to the mega merge site but for some reason I can’t reach their site from here, but I can if I avoid Esat’s network. Strange.
We bought the Canon A70!
My dad was looking at buying a Canon A70 and I eventually settled on 7 Day Shop in the UK as they’ve the best prices. When I bought from them in the past I received my goods promptly and without a problem.
‘Course, I was sorely tempted to splash out on a 256MB USB keyring, and some more filters for my camera, and a new flash, and.. maybe after I’ve moved into the new house!
Later.. I don’t recommend 7dayshop any more. Read my 7dayshop review and please avoid them!
