Scott Andrew pointed out that …

Scott Andrew pointed out that the web was silent on the terrorist attack in Bali. That’s true, but the Irish media have had plenty of reports about it. A quick search on daypop shows 91 weblogs mentioned the attacks. (this number is only accurate today due to the way daypop works!)
My own piece on the attack comes in on the 3rd page where I stopped scanning.
The web and especially weblogs are US-centric. Sure, there are weblogs written by people all over the world but we’re a minority I feel. Get used to it, if it didn’t happen in the States then it didn’t happen and it probably won’t get widely reported and commented on. That’s one thing that frightens me about the influence weblogs have over Google, that bias will exist.

On the other hand, the sniper shootings in Washington have received scant attention from webloggers while it makes headlines here in Ireland and talk shows devote air-time discussing it. No matter how we feel weblogs have supplanted journalism for reporting news, if it doesn’t interest us or motivate us enough we won’t talk about it. The same occurs in any volunteer effort and is perfectly normal. (see the open source world for this -> google for “itch a scratch”)

For all European readers, imagine a bomb going off in Ibiza.. That’s what Bali was to Australians. You have my condolances. I hope they track down those murderers.

I found something annoying in …

I found something annoying in my new install of Red Hat 8. I use keyboard shortcuts a lot, and I use CTRL 1,2,3 and 4 to switch virtual desktops. Unfortunately when I do, the application on each desktop with the focus (sometimes) doesn’t accept keyboard input and I have to either switch back and forth between desktops or ALT-TAB between windows a few times to fix it. I asked the ILUG for help and Stephane Dudzinski answered quickly confirming the problem. It’s a fault with Gnome2, and not just Red Hat 8.
This post from gnome.org seems to suggest the problem is harder to fix than it might be because of the number of ways the Panel can be used.
I’ll continue to use Gnome, I actually prefer Nautilaus at the moment to Konqueror, and I’ve gone back to double-clicking again.

I presume you've all heard of …

I presume you’ve all heard of the terrorist attacks in Bali? A woman was on the radio this morning, her daughter and her friend are out there. They’re nurses, and were supposed to go to that nightclub. Luckily they stayed in their hotel, but she described to her mother how she felt the earth shake, heard a huge boom and saw a bright flash as the car bombs went off.
The two friends helped all day yesterday in the hospital tending to the sick, but they lack simple things like antibiotics and pain killers. She rang her mother this morning and told her she’d was on her way home, the airlines were flying anyone who wanted (and I presume had tickets) out, so the two girls are returning home.

My sister travelled extensively in that region up until a month ago. If this had happened then, I might be retelling a very different story today.
God help them.
