Wow! a small bird flew into the office a few minutes ago! It landed on a chair, I spotted it, grabbed my camera, but it disappeared again. It came in again a few minutes later and I had my camera ready and took a few pics, none are great as it’s very hard to take photographs of a fast-flying and agitated bird in an enclosed space. I grabbed a bin and spent the next 5 minutes trying to capture it, with Kevin’s help we managed to get it into the bin and covered before letting it go outside. I heard the bird chirp 3 times as it flew away.. (wipes tear from eye)

I never had much use for transparent terminals. They annoyed me, but with my own photos on the desktop it’s kinda nice to see familiar scenes in the background of my terminal as I work.
Here’s the settings I use with MGT:

I like having a light coloured background (black on light yellow) so here we go..
Settings->Tab Preferences->Image

  1. Check the “Transparent” box.
  2. Set “Shaded Background” to 41%
  3. Set “Adjust Contrast” to -69%
  4. Set “Gamma Correction” to -14%
  5. Tint the background with whatever colour you like.

The aim would be to get a lightly transparent image, that’s discernable but not distracting. These work for me, but YMMV!

I have a huge and growing collection of photos thanks to my interest in photography and my Fujifilm 2800z so earlier today I decided to display them in the background of my desktop..
Changing the background in X used to be simple. Just run wmsetbg with the filename of the image and it worked. Not so in Red Hat 8/Gnome 2.
I first searched on freshmeat and found chbg which is supposed to be.. well, I’m not sure. It’s damn confusing and I could only get it to display images in a window. (I suspect this has something to do with Gnome 2 and/or Nautilaus)
I then stumbled across chbg-gnome2 which is a very simple Perl script that uses the Gnome 2 gconf database to set the background. I copied (or symlinked) a few images into a directory, added a crontab entry for chbg-gnome2 pointing at that directory and now my background changes every 2 minutes! It’s The Unix Way of doing things I suppose.

Walking the streets in the rain: the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, viewing flood damage in Millmount Avenue, Drumcondra, Dublin, in the early hours of yesterday morning. (Irish Times)
No doubt this photo will get dragged up again and again when the Taoiseach is in hot water!
