Billy Burke, RIP

Last April I posted the news that a 29 year old Kerryman, Billy Burke, was awaiting a lung transplant. He was on a waiting list for over three and a half years.
Unfortunately, he died this morning without having the operation. Tragic as his death is, it’s not as simple as that – he was refused care in a UK hospital that has exclusive access to all donated organs from Ireland, but despite this, a hospital in Manchester took him on.
His website, savebilly.org was updated this morning with the news of his passing.

Mr Burke’s condition deteriorated in recent weeks. He died this morning at the Mater Hospital in Dublin.

EA: The Human Story

If true, this shocking story from the spouce of an Electronic Arts employee is terrible! They’re expected to work up to 11 hours a day, 6 days a week, and not just at the end of a project either!
I knew that the game industry was tough but that’s crazy and illegal too as they’re not being compensated for the extra hours worked. There’s 15 pages of comments too so it touched a nerve with lots of people.
Slashdot has more.

Sunday Times Online.. reading tonight

I bought the paper yesterday but it’ll probably be easier for me to browse it online anyway. I find myself skimming articles and on paper that’s hard to do.
I blame the web. First we grew accustomed to banner ads and flashing gizmos flying out of our browsers, then to suck down all the content blogging creates every day we learnt to quickly scan titles, then along came css so we don’t have to even visit websites any more! Now I can quickly scan the Sunday Times, and I’m waiting for the RSS feeds.
And, pron, Jeremy Clarkson’s article on security at Westminister was great!

The BBC, for instance, is supremely well guarded. The security personnel are programmed to allow nobody in, at all, ever. And if you do make it to the electric revolving doors they will respond only if presented with a computerised photo ID.

To get round all this I simply enter the building every day through the post room.

iPod, uPod, we allPod

While Mark is rubbing his hands in glee playing with his new computer, Apple released the new iPod. At $600 the price’s a little steep and makes the iRiver H320’s $299 price tag look a lot more attractive. I can squirt photos on to both, and I doubt I’d be away from a PC long enough to fill the 20GB capacity of that device with images.
Metafilter discussion here, along with some insightful comments and links.
I mentioned the H320 before: 1 2

Bah. That U2 iPod is ugly. I am going to buy some sort of mp3 player soon to take jogging and with me to work, I haven’t decided what to get. I do not think I want to buy an iPod, I do not like the looks of them, I have no interest in iTunes and the damn aac files.

Later… Hehe, User Friendly is funny.

Murder funeral crowd 'knew exactly what to do'

Ok, this is a frightening story in the Examiner!

Mr “Jaws” Ward Jr said told the jury they were still advancing forward when the accused, Mr Michael “Bumbee Hitler” McDonagh Sr said: “Shoot them. Shoot them. Kill them.”

Mr “Jaws” Ward Jr said under cross examination that he picked up a slash hook that was on the side of the road as he walked towards the assembled crowd of McDonaghs.

And Tonight..

I’m looking forward to seeing the first episode of Battlestar Galactica! It’s on Sky 1 at 8pm! Don’t miss it!
Update… Wow, I didn’t realise we were seeing the first episode before anyone else! Like Mark I found it to be a mixed bag. The mini series was certainly better but I still enjoyed it. I didn’t find it quite as gripping as the mini series however.
Of course the director can kill off a few characters! It happened in the original series when …. hehe. I won’t spoil it for my younger (< 23yro) readers!
