Daw Books – Science Fiction stuff!

While in Chicago I continued my favourite past time of browsing in book shops. I don’t remember the shop itself but it was on the corner of State and Randolph I think where I purchased a DAW Books 30th Anniversary Science Fiction Collection. I’m half way through it now and it’s a great read, Tad Williams’ short story is crazy, following the take over of the Earth by an AI, Terminator or Lawnmower man style, but through IRC! heh. Another story uses IRC too as a means of communication between ships in space, and a whole story unwinds from the script of the chat-session. Great stuff.

Link Death, your personal Internet Archive?

I hate when links die and the articles, insights, and information that once lived somewhere is lost. Via the “A Year Ago” link to the left, I came across this post again. It’s a photography article on using an external flash but it’s gone now. grrr.
I think I need to start using that DVD burner at home and archive stuff I link to. Especially tutorials, and once-off articles that I really got some value out of.

Topix – more news, and local news

Topix is a new news aggregator, like Google News but it has the ability it dig down to local news. If you live in the USA you can enter your location and find news from your area! It even has news from Ireland too, although I only recognised 2 or 3 of the headlines. Most of the news that’s making headlines at home isn’t represented, but hopefully it’ll improve. One major problem of course is the fact that Irish newspapers don’t provide free access to their archives which is unfortunate. (That’s not a criticism, it’s an observation, the “free lunch” of the Internet is over!)
