We're fat, and it's official!

It seems that obesity levels in Ireland have, increased by almost one third in the past four years, and recent surveys show that one in five Irish boys and girls are overweight.
Since I came back from the States (where I put on a few extra pounds weight!) I’ve been following my own diet – eat less and do more exercise. Has it worked? Yes! I’ve lost about 7lb since December! 🙂
And in other news, the Irish drink more than anyone else in the EU! Oh! Surprise!

Murder – Victim Impact

I meant to comment earlier as I heard this on the news this morning, but Karlin posted first about Mary Murphy, mother of Brian Murphy who was kicked to death outside a nightclub in Dublin in August 2000. She spoke at the trial of those accused of the manslaughter of her son. Here’s a re-enactment of part of that statement. Her family went through hell, twice. Once in 2000, and then again through this trial.

Dining In Cork?

I enjoyed one of the best meals I’ve eaten out in a long time on Saturday night! It wasn’t in Cork City, it wasn’t in Kinsale, or anywhere you’d expect, but in Oyster Haven. In Oz Haven to be exact!
The menu is varied, from wild boar and ostrich to seafood such as salmon and sushi. Yum. I loved the setting, we weren’t squashed in, there was plenty of space between tables, a fireside table was a luxury not available in many restaurants in town! Paul was a knowledgable and courteous host and can tell you whatever you need to know about the food or wine available.
If you’re looking to impress your significant other, or simply looking for good quality and delicious food, dine in Oz Haven!

"Access to the specified device, path, or file is denied"

Sometimes Windows can surprise you. I’m fixing up a PC that was infested with over a dozen dialers and spyware apps, and over 100 suspicious registry keys (thank you Adaware!)
After I cleaned out the machine I couldn’t bring up the display properties. I would get the above error message!
Thanks to this page I found a solution and now I know about a useful tool called “sfc” which can be used to restore individual files of a Windows (at least Win98 anyway) installation from the source cab files. A quick reboot later and I was able to change the screen resolution again!
Later, it looks like it’s not completely clean, there was still a reference to fntldr.exe in the win.ini.. That ptsnoop.exe looks suspicious too. Hmm. Must try some of the other anti-spyware out there.

Procmail Sanitizer 1.141 available

The Procmail Sanitizer has been updated and now scans inside zip files. I just tried it with a copy of MyDoom and it quarantined it on the server.
Later, After installed Fedora Core 1 on a new server I discovered that Metamail doesn’t ship with FC1. Bad, bad, it’s required for checking the zip files.
It’s available on ATrpms according to the mega merge site but for some reason I can’t reach their site from here, but I can if I avoid Esat’s network. Strange.

Does God Exist?

It’s one of the oldest questions facing man. Does God Exist?
This article uses a mathematical proof to answer that question. The proof uses relational logic, and it makes sense, sort of, but it reminds me of some of the mathematical problems I faced in college. It seemed to me at the time that the solution to certain problems depending more on contrived manipulation of the figures than logic. The problem would suddenly go from being a mass of numbers on a white-board to a neatly stated answer on the next line. *shrug*
Heh. Plenty of disenting comments after the article, food for thought!
