The Case Against Professionalism – Cringely writes a thoughtful piece on the role of management in companies. What’s more important? Short term gain, or long term failure?
The thing that came to mind as I read this article, is that Red Hat’s founder isn’t there any more. That would worry me, except I’ve talked to Red Hat employees, they all know how important the GPL is to the company.
Then again, those I’ve talked to have met Rob Young personally. What about new hires?

This morning on the way to work I looked to my right and saw 3 swans flying in formation over the River Lee. They made for an amazing spectacle and they continued alongside my car for about 200 yards before banking away to another part of the city.
I wish I had my camera and had been standing at the side of the road with a tripod. They flew over a bridge, a man walking across the bridge was oblivious to these magnificient birds flying just feet above his head, in fact nobody seemed to notice them.
They are beautiful and powerful creatures, and seeing them so early in the morning lifted my spirits, hopefully for the rest of the day!
