Remember the RFC that proposed adding an “evil bit” to TCP/IP? Here’s what people said about it!
Sometimes, More Is More
This guy is brave coming out and saying he thinks KDE is better than Gnome. He even included his email address. *cough*he’ll learn quickly!*cough*
(and the same applies to you rabid Mac and Windows advocates! 🙂
webDav Editors
This moring I read an article on configuring Apache to use webDav. That got me wondering what webDav enabled editors are available? Apparently Mozilla supports webDav! Must take a look!

Amazing photograph taken at sea! wow!
Installing PHP4, mod_ssl and Apache
If you’re installing PHP4, with an ssl enabled Apache you may run into the same problem I just ran into.
The lines LoadModule php4_module libexec/libphp4.so
and AddModule mod_php4.c
are inserted by the php installer automatically. Unfortunately, mod_ssl also adds in code to load mod_ssl.
From what I saw, it looks like the PHP installer adds the php loadmodule commands after the last load module. That’s fine in most cases, but unfortunately here, the last load module command had an if
statement around it. When I visited a non-https url php wouldn’t work!
For some reason it didn’t add the AddType commands either but those were easily copied from another httpd.conf!
Today..
This morning I got bluetooth working from Win2k. After a few reboots (of both PC and phone) I was able to transfer over a few gam^h^h^h^happs to the phone. It seems the Win2k software opens an ftp connection to the phone!
I wonder if anyone has done any work getting the phone setup as an external ftp server inside KDE Konqueror?
I installed Red Hat 9 on a server here. Then I downloaded apt for Red Hat 9 and did an “update” and “upgrade”. It found updated packages for openssl, samba, and sendmail so be warned if you’re putting a virgin RH9 box on the internet – chances are it has exploitable applications.
scottandrew.com – nice design
Scott – I know you redesigned a while back, but it just struck me tonight how nice your design is. Well done!
Robert Fisk In Baghdad
I just heard Robert Fisk talk on Today FM. He told how the tank that fired on the Palestine Hotel wasn’t being sniped upon. He was halfway between the tank and the hotel itself and didn’t hear any attack. A French film crew in the hotel were filming the tank for 5 minutes and didn’t record any shots. Hours later did an American General not announce that the tank was under attack from snipers? Was he covering up something?
Robert described seeing a father raise his child to a camera for the world to see: all that was left of the child was a head, torso and one arm. The world will never see those images.
Roberted posted an excellent article this morning from Baghdad. Go read it.
Connecting a Nokia 7650 to Linux via Bluetooth
And for my next trick I shall get my 7650 talking to Linux via the Bluetooth dongle that arrived in the post yesterday.
This howto is useful, and links to the Bluez howto too. Unfortunately it all looks rather beta and requires the user compile and patch code.
‘s funny, the CD that comes with the dongle just asks you to run setup.exe (although I couldn’t get it to see my Nokia when I ran it in WinXP last night..)
So, as ever, Linux needs to catch up in this area but then Microsoft and Apple are catching up with Linux in others. (No, I refuse to get into a fight with you Mark on this.. hehe!)
Teeth, teeth, teeth..
I’m after my root canal now. I had it done this morning. I was expecting the worst as I walked into the dentist’s surgery.
It took an hour, I didn’t feel any pain but a lot of discomfort having my mouth open for so long! I was given and injection, the dentist drilled down into the tooth a bit and then started poking small rods into the tooth to clear it out. Just like clearing out a pipe!
When he was certain the tooth was as clear as he could get it, he filled the tooth with small plastic pins which he then melted into my tooth using a bunsen-burner heated instrument!
Finally, a filling was put on top, an xray taken of the tooth and I was told that the procedure went perfectly.
Then I coughed up the ridiculous amount of money dentists charge and our PRSI doesn’t cover.. I’ll have to send off that tax-relief form and hope I get some of it back!
