While googling for a way to script the Levels->Auto function in The GIMP I searched for the same using Image Magick. Using the -normalize parameter to convert works reasonably well, but falls well short of The GIMP.
“Convert” worked fine for the first image I tried but another image with strong orange sunlight had a yellow cast that the GIMP got rid of.
