Adding fonts to Red Hat 8.0 – I knew about ~/fonts but I didn’t know I had to run fc-cache, I should have read the release notes – /usr/share/doc/redhat-release-8.0/RELEASE-NOTES-i386.
True Type fonts were already in a system directory so I didn’t lose out.. Xft handles other dirs.
And specific to Open Office, here’s how to add fonts to that application. Even does TT fonts! I pointed it at ~fonts, dialog box popped up and it kindly informed me that 63 fonts had been imported! I fired up Open Office then, and Arial and all your favourite Windows fonts were there for the picking. My boss would be happy.

Mathew posted some hints on configuring Open Office. He has a couple of good points, but I haven’t decided if I agree with point 5 yet. I like to see my bullet points shaded as the default bullet is quite small and can be mistaken for a full stop (AFAIR).
My Dad didn’t like the page boundary around each page, but after using Word 97 here at work I found it infuriating trying to find the first line of a page. I usually backspaced through too many lines by 1 or 2 lines.
